Discuss the show.
Make outside predictions if you want.
And so forth.
The awards themselves will be pretty boring, but I'm curious as to what this "narrative" way of giving them out is all about.

A Herzog win would be a beautiful thing to see. It won't happen, as the only one that would upset Man on Wire is Trouble The Water it seems. But hey, you never know. He'll be there.
Despite knowing who will win, there is chance for a few good speeches at least.

I thought Hugh Jackman was a lot of fun, and the musical numbers had some very funny moments. Cheesy, but Jackman made it feel cheesy in a sincere way.
Biggest shock of the night: Mickey Rourke not taking home Best Actor. The worst part about it is I'm not sure he'll ever get another chance. Sean Penn's speech was surprisingly heartfelt for him, whom I find often comes across a little forced in his eccentric behaviour.
I had a good chuckle at Ben Stiller's impression of Joaquin Phoenix, too. When he turned around and walked away to watch the videos on the screen, I nearly spat out of my coffee.
Oh, and I'm still dying to see Benjamin Button.

Like some of the changes, but they don't need previous winners to give blow jobs to this year's nominations. Change that up a bit, cut out a dance routine, and do something akin to the Comedies of 2008 as far as "tributes" go.

Actually really enjoyed this show. Jackman was an entertaining host (though I'm thinking I'd like to see a Will Smith-hosted show one of these days).
The action montage took too long, but otherwise, the montages were good and the banter was usually short and not facepalm-worthy. I liked the way the actors' awards were done, though some of the intros took a little too long.
Liked how quickly they knocked out the best song category.

Some thoughts:
-Besides the acting categories, I more or less liked the show's production. Not the complete disaster that was the 2004 show, but some bizarre choices. Once the theme became clear of tracking the awards through the chronological order of how a film is made, it became more enjoyable.
Though there was a reason they dropped the musical numbers years ago. Maybe it was a condition of Jackman hosting the show that they be brought back. I could see that.
-Yeah, sorry, I just don't understand doing acting categories without clips of their actual performance. Worse, I'm afraid the actors will love the oral pleasure they were given on national TV that they'll push producers to keep doing this. Here's an idea, if they're going to insist on doing five minutes just to say the nominees, you could cut down on that by showing 30 seconds of an actor's scene and that would still be a lot longer than they usually are and showcase why they're getting bloody nominated in the first place! Yes it's stupid, but damn it, I was looking forward to seeing what scenes from The Dark Knight and Tropic Thunder they would have chosen to show as the example of the nominated performance. Also consider one clip would be the last time we'd ever see one of the actors at these awards.
Funny too how Michael Douglas is saying previous portrayals of Nixon fade in comparison to Langella's when he's standing right next to Anthony Hopkins.
-It's odd when you consider the strange undercurrent that kept coming up about how they nominated films no one saw. The Reader seemed to be the butt of a number of jokes (Jackman's opening song, the two stoners from Pineapple Express laughing at the film) and you have to love Will Smith's line about big action films. "They have something else too. Oh yeah. Fans."
Seriously, what complete non-events Frost/Nixon and The Reader became during the race.
-The inevitability of Slumdog Millionaire's win helped deaden the blow of yet another year with the least deserving of the five films taking the top prize. I tried to be happy for Danny Boyle when putting his win in the context that he did Trainspotting and 28 Days Later and that in general he's a relatively young and/or newish director.
-The filler montages became more interesting as the show progressed. The first one for animation was pointless and featured more bad than good (that space monkey film seemed to take up most of the clip's time). The Apatow skit really was the highlight, with Rogen and Franco laughing at all the Oscar bait. The action clip was well edited, but then why not do one for dramas too? It's almost like they're admitting that they purposefully don't nominated animation, comedies or action films.
-I was genuinely happy for Kate Winslet, who somehow has managed to become even more stunning the older she gets. I loved that she thanked Peter Jackson.
-At least given the stupid format, Kevin Klein was able to paint a mental picture of TDK's most stunning image when discussing Ledger.
-Fincher is a warm, loving person? That's cool. I had heard otherwise.
-Got to love the ending montage of 2009 films already pre-chosen as next year's nominees and winners. ;) An Amelia Erhart bio-pic? The first I've heard of it. Most likely will get Swank another nomination.

* Jackman was fine, very lively, but was given little to do except dance and sing or so I felt. I missed Stewart's sarcastic remarks and snide comments to bring all the glitter and glamour down a notch.
* I didn't like the In Memoriam section. Some were too far away into the screen to read properly. Sure, I know Charlton Heston and Roy Scheider were actors, but I had to blink a little.

I watched a chunk of this. I saw Heath Ledger's win, the Comedy bit (use of The Reader in the Pineapple Express bit was very sportive), the ugly "Love" montage, the "Action" montage, Will Smith presenting, and the Jackson/Beyonce number. Don't think it was at all "classy" or even "Broadway" as they wanted it to be, but damn, I'm not much of a popular music guy, but Beyonce is melt-some-butter-top-of-that sexilicious. Oh, and the fusion of the hip music scene and "golden era"-ian cinema did come through, good job Hollywood. The couples in really bad musical movies popping up at the end, though... Between all the indescriminite montages, seeing Wanted and HSM3 touted up there, the award show just felt like a celebration of really mediocre cinema, so I was kind of glad I had to stop watching (though, of course, there was the urge to continue). Were previous awards ceremonies so heavy on the "Year in Review" montage? No, right?

Well, I'll go on record as saying I found Jackman boring as could be. I like comedy from my host, and he didn't bring any. Other than that, the show went how I thought it would, and while I'm not terribly happy with some of the results, I do have a chance to win 104 movie passes from my local theater, as all of my predictions were correct. Other than that, the show went how I thought it would, and while I'm not terribly happy with some of the results, I do have a chance to win 104 movie passes from my local theater, as all of my predictions were correct. That's a movie a week for my wife and I for an entire year.

Gladiator is awesome.
I've decided that I don't like Bill Maher anymore.
The Washington Post this morning mentioned that he always looks like "a smacked ass."
Anyhoo.
I loved Jackman, but I love Jackman. I also love musical numbers. His duets with Hathaway and Beyonce were both great, although the two Mamma Mia actors and the HSM actors were lame-o. I found Jackman more charming than funny.
Although, next year, the host should be a tag-team of Tina Fey and Steve Martin. WHO'S WITH ME?
Stiller's Phoenix impression was hilarious, and I really liked the five previous winners handing out acting awards, since they only did it with the four acting awards. If it went on all night, I would have been pretty bored.
The silliest portion of the show were the montages of action films, romances, etc. Point being what exactly?
The set design for the stage was gorgeous.

Congrats, KF! And I agree that Jackman was boring, but he always is IMO.
Don't congratulate yet. If others also got all of the predictions right, it comes down to a drawing. There are smaller amounts of passes for second and third place though, so my chances should be decent of winning at least one of the prizes.

No, it was only the main categories. Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and the Supporting categories. Not too difficult this year, but I did predict Penn over Rourke, which was the toughest choice to make. The rest seemed pretty straight-forward, I was just hoping there were no upsets.

The ceremony overall was decent. I don't feel that they gave Jackman enough to do, or maybe he just wanted to do mainly song and dance numbers. Since I don't really like the musical genre, I didn't care for either one.
If anything I'm bummed by Rourke losing. Not because I think he was deserving (I have no idea, as I didn't see most of the nominees) but because it would have been cool. And his acceptance speech could have been something. Oh well. I figured it will be either him or Penn.
Funny enough the only major categories I got wrong were Best Director (I said Fincher) and Best Actor (I voted for Rourke). Which also speaks to the predicatable nature of this year's awards.
All of the comedies onstage (Fey, Martin, Black, etc.) were funny (I too loved seeing Stiller mock Phoneix on stage). Will Smith wasn't half bad either, and some of his comments were actually funny.
Finally I agree that Cuban Gooding Jr. and Adrian Brody seemed out of place amongst much better actors.

None of those people except Cuba and Halle were saying how great another performer was though. I guess what I'm saying is that coming from DeNiro or Anthony Hopkins, that might actually mean something. Coming from Adrien Brody who is sharing a stage with people exponentially more accomplished than he is, it's like, so what? Are you equating a screenplay with simply the dialogue? Because, yes, it is an extremely notable moment in the way the scene is set and the characters are positioned and where it fits into the larger whole. I think that's why they read the stage directions during the broadcast, to show that a screenplay is not merely the words that the actors say.
It reminds me of how people ridiculed the Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Branagh's Hamlet. But I thought is was a good nomination, due to the amount of work Branagh did in recontextualizing that story.

Still worthy of ridicule.
I guess if you want to pretend that all Branagh did was photocopy Hamlet and then scribble in his name at the top, then that's your business. I find it to be kind of disingenuous.

So everyone who disagrees with you is being disingenuous? Yes a screenplay is about more than the dialogue, I simply do not believe that in this case his recontextualization is worthy of such esteem, all the more so because it was the first unabridged film version of the play. He did not make those difficult cuts, reorderings, or additions that most scriptwriters must make when adapting a work (aside from a few largely unnecessary flashbacks). Such redefinitions of original works is much of what makes the editorial task worthy of esteem in the first place. Scribbling down new settings and character treatments isn't enough to warrant high praise in terms of script writing in my view.

There is a lot more that he did besides add new settings and character treatments. One notable example is the approach of Fortinbras' army during the film's final sequence. This is not something called for in the original script and yet it adds a great deal of tension and suspense. There are numerous other examples I could cite if I wished to keep tally on a four-hour film in order to prove a message board point. However, I do not.

Yeah he added a small handful of things, the approach of the army being a functional addition but overall he didn't add that much and what he did add were largely superfluous additions. I didn't mention the approach of the army but I alluded to flashbacks such as his sexual relationship with Ophelia and his friendship with Yorick.
Chimes at Midnight on the other hand, now there's a film worthy of an adapted screenplay nomination.

I don't get it. Are you proving my point for me? The only reason any of these lines mean anything to us is because the context of the entire movie is etched into our brains. These lines don't mean anything read alone and don't get to the essence of a great screenplay -- we're not giving out awards for "Best Quip." In fact, some of them sound downright corny if you block out the context of the movie.

Not really, most of them are cultural touchstones which I'd heard before seeing the films. They did not strike me as corny then nor do they now. Although many of them (particularly the ones with names) are it's true, much more potent in context. By the by very few of those are quips. Memorable dialogue certainly isn't necessary for a great screenplay, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Mostly however I just wanted to build a short scene via famous quotations.

I remember Branagh's Hamlet felt like 40 hours. I was pretty hungry when I saw it though.

I will probably never know how I actually feel about The Terminal because of how badly I needed to pee.

A few years ago, I would've found a joke like this reprehensible. But now, just reading this, I laughed out loud.
Am I dumber now?

My most unpleasant film-going experience ever was trying to watch Legends of the Fall in the theater while really needing to use the bathroom. I went with six school friends (three couples) and I was on the inside of the row, next to the wall, and they were all between me and the aisle. They were all making out like hopped-up hormonal bunnies the entire time, and I didn't want to interrupt them all by climbing out.
The problem was that the film kept behaving like it was about to end, but it JUST... KEPT... GOING. I was so frustrated that I really don't know if the film actually sucked that badly, or if that's the bladder talking.

I think my implicit recognition of the stupidity of the joke via gradually dwindling laughter helped to sell it.

It's too long with or without bladder issues.Yep. That and the fact that the second act was weak as hell. I still ended up liking it overall, but I think that was mostly due to Tom Hanks, who's good in about everything he's in.

1. Million Dollar Baby (maybe Sideways, but love both films)
2. Crash (my choice, unpopular as it is)
3. Slumdog Millionaire (The Reader)
4. LOTR: The Return of the King (Lost in Translation)
5. Chicago (The Pianist, I guess)
6. No Country for Old Men (Atonement)
7. The Departed (Little Miss Sunshine)
8. Gladiator (errr...Traffic?)
9. A Beautiful Mind (Gosford Park or In the Bedroom. Can't believe that piece of crap won)

I saw A Very Long Engagement after an unsuccessful two-hour-long search for my glasses. I made my companions sit in the front row and I squinted the whole time.
But I still enjoyed it.

I really loved Hugh Jackman's intro musical number.
Especially the finale.
