According to The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i05341b23a35365d8b527f8642b9 afcb0), Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington will be starring in the next film from director David Cronenberg.

The film will be based on Robert Ludlum's "The Matarese Circle", with Tom Cruise playing Russian spy Vasli Taleniekvov and Washington playing American spy Brandon Scofield.

To those who don't know, Ludlum is also the author of the "Bourne" series, and - at least according to the article - MGM is hoping to develop this into a franchise.

I love how Cronenberg has shifted from body-horror to these intricate little thrillers. Such an interesting change of pace this late in a filmmaker's career.

When's his giallo picture coming out?

Although this is nothing new for Cronenberg, it does seem that Canadian auteurs are becoming more inclined towards working with well-known Hollywood actors. For instance, Atom Egoyan's next movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1352824/) is going to star Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried.

Cronenberg, Cruise and Washington seems like a pretty random trio but that doesn't mean I'm not intrigued.

Enlisting two A-list actors to play opposing spies. That's new.

Yeah, but Eastern Promises and History of Violence sounded "been there, done that" and turned out to be pretty great. Cronenberg has been pretty reliable as of late I think.

Yeah, because films are all about the set-up and plot and not about the execution.

Damn you, Derek. If I can't make snarky, overly-generalized remarks for films I haven't seen in the Upcoming Film Emporium then where can I? HUH?

I'm interested. Ludlum via David Cronenberg. Sounds interesting.
