When Jen showed me the Amazon.com page for this book, being released in April...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/510XXFxXXGL._SS500_.jpg

...I thought "huh, that's cute...it'll probably not be more than a funny little novelty."

Apparently it's some kind of internet sensation, and the studios are all over this sh*t already (http://www.cinematical.com/2009/02/11/pride-and-prejudice-and-zombies-finally-a-chick-flick-with-br/).

I think it's amazing that this guy is going to get paid by the bazoons because of the bidding war, when he only wrote 15% of the book.

I think Pride and Prejudice with zombies is not a funny joke.

I... do.

And I never read those stupid Austen and Bronte re-writes, sequels, and prequels.

But... zombies.

I feel like "With Zombies!" is getting pretty close to Pirates vs. Ninjas territory.

Quote from the author's blog:

For the record, I love Jane Austen. She wrote comedies. She was subversive and snarky and wore bonnets. Good qualities, all.

Also, he put it in his contract that if he brok #100 on amazon.com, his publisher would have to buy him a pony.

Yes. It happened.

Pirates and Ninjas have nothing in common.

Pride & Prejudice and zombies are both... funny.

Winston*'s pretty much right here. With this, World War Z, all that stupid shit on Facebook, that awful Severance film, &c., &c., I think we're about to suffer a major zombie overload that will pretty much make zombies untouchable for a couple decades.

What's wrong with World War Z? It's a terrific book.

Sycophant

Nothing wrong with it. It's just part of the deluge.

The first conversation I had with my friends about ninjas and pirates was pretty entertaining.

What did Severance have to do with zombies?

What about Pride and Prejudice and Woody Allen?

Jane Austen characters interact with neurotic New York Jews? I would camp out for that.

I've never understood the whole ninjas and pirates thing. It's so stupid, and not even funny.

Everyone knows that pirates are lame; they wear puffy shirts and they have scurvy. Some of them don't even have both legs.

So will I. A lot of the films my classmates are making in my Film Production 1 class will be...zombie films. Yawn...

I'd watch a big-budget "Pirates vs. Ninjas" movie in a second.

Throw zombies in, and I'm in like Flynt.

Sycophant

I directed a short zombie film almost five years ago. It was about zombies who come over to a young couple's house for dinner, drinks, and conversation.

Now I don't think I would make such a film because I really feel zombies have become entirely played out, my shitty list of examples notwithstanding.

Pitch it as Austen meets Shaun of the Dead, and they're gonna be all over it. The trick is, you have to get the chicks thinking the zombies aren't "scary".

It could totally work.

And I love the idea.

I meant it in a very reductive way. Romance + supernatural creatures from traditional horror .

Sycophant

No, it wasn't.

Considering the Interent's already-embrace of this material, Snakes on a Plane is probably the perfect analogue. If someone's going to turn this into a movie they should try to get it in theater's by November so the steam doesn't totally run out (New Line would've done well to get SoaP out in early, not late, Summer).

Yeah, given how phenomenally bad this book could be, I'm not preordering it.

I am, however, going to go to the store and read the first chapter. If it's good, I will purchase.

Wouldn't the first chapter just be the same first chapter from Pride & Prejudice?

I hope this movie does well, cuz I'd love to see a whole host of movies based on classic novels with zombies thrown in to spice things up a bit. Just imagine the possibilities:

* Moby Dick with Zombies
* Madame Bovary with Zombies
* Les Miserables avec des Zombies
* The Da Vinci Code with Zombies
* My Calc 101 Text Book with Zombies

Okay, people, I finished the book. Thoughts in the Book Discussion Thread.

But the important part was that several times while reading, I thought, "This would make an awesome movie."

So, there you go. I'd order midnight tickets in a second.

Looks like there's been no recent news on a movie adaptation. Still thinking they need to act swiftly. This thing could be huge.

Glad to hear it actually turned out to be a pretty good book.

I actually think it would possibly make a better film than a book, given some of the issues that annoyed me in the novel. Assuming, naturally, that they did it well.

Wait.. this is rated PG-13?!

I saw the usual horror movie turning-blood-into-a-mucky-brown-colour in the TV spots, but assumed it was just that: For the TV spots.

This basically ensures a Drag Me To Hell-esque properly bloody "unrated" version for the home market, right? I'll wait 'til that. (I will watch it because I like the cast very much.)
