There's still a few films I haven't seen from Mel Brooks. Regardless, he's one of my all time favorite directors.
The Producers(1968)-9.5
The Twelve Chairs(1970)-7.0
Blazing Saddles(1974)-10.0

High Anxiety(1977)-7.0
History of the World: Part I(1981)-8.0
Spaceballs(1987)-8.5

I have seen Life Stinks and Silent Movie, but I don't remember either well enough to rate them. Although I recall parts of "Stinks" being very weak/bad, and "Movie" being slightly amusing.
Oh and my favorite film of his is Spaceballs. His overrall rating is 7.625.

I think it's pretty funny -- especially the first half, set in the Psychoneurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous -- the second half, not so much.
Harvey Korman is a riot, tho.

Sorry, he's a filmmaker who could be prone to nostalgia ratings. I will say, though, that The Producers was one of my most formative viewings back when I was nineteen. I stared blankly at the thing; it was like someone getting jacked up on sugar and then performing shrilly (like a version of Waiting for Godot that is so bad that it leaves the realm of tragedy and becomes slapstick). The targets are too obvious (old rich women funding Mostel and Wilder--crazy, I tells you), save for when Brooks pushes the envelope. I rarely laughed.
Men in Tights likely isn't any less obvious, but I know that I consistently laughed, and it was viewed at the same time. And I've always liked Elwes.
I do believe that Blazing Saddles is one of the four funniest films I've ever seen (with Holy Grail, Love and Death and Withnail and I), so there's that as an equallizer. :pritch:

I've never been impressed. His comedy seems too slow-paced, and increasingly obvious in direct proportion to his increasing years.

Just assume all those bad ratings came from people who mistakenly watched the horrible Broderick/ Lane version instead.
