She needs 10 pounds of make-up and 10 hours too much time in a tanning bed to look like that.

Her inability to act, her constant attention whoring and her sole purpose in life being to give 13 year old boys boners when they go see Transformers 2 is what makes her worthless.

As I said, I don't see much of a difference between her and someone like Paris Hilton. She's one of those people who's famous for being famous (and for allegedly being attractive).

EDIT: I find it hard to have much respect for someone who thrives so much on ridiculous tabloid publicity.

Any time she isn't in the news for more than a couple of weeks, she comes out with some ridiculous quote about how she "loves anal sex" or whatever, then later on she'll say how she wants to be taken seriously as an actress.

Her inability to act, her constant attention whoring and her sole purpose in life being to give 13 year old boys boners when they go see Transformers 2 is what makes her worthless. And they (13-year-old boys) appreciate it.

Also, I disagree that Paris Hilton is worthless. Perhaps a better word to describe it would be "useless?" Even then, that's a bit harsh and I wouldn't agree, but it's much less harsh than "worthless person" which denies these people their humanity. That's kinda reprehensible.

Also, do remember that fame and celebrity is a two-way relationship.

Produced by Graham King and Tim Headington, the films will create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft.

Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics, confirmed that they are already working with GK Films to reboot the film franchise.

They are working from this new take that we’ve given them… It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens. It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise… We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old Tomb Raider films

They should just get Camilla Luddington to play Croft in the movies at this point, right? Like, she already does her voice in the current, well-liked games, has a fair career profile (Grey's Anatomy being her main gig..) but not a big enough one for any announcement to cause any real division with whatever fans care about such casting. Sure she doesn't have the classically stern, intimidating look of the character in the games or Jolie's incarnation, but she's still undeniably gorgeous and has distinctive presence in the few things I've seen her in. Sadly not really sure what discernible traits an on-screen Croft needs though, to be honest, other than those physical ones.

This is more than I ever expected to write about a Tomb Raider reboot.

Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft.

I mean, as much as I love her, I think it's a bit odd of a choice for her to choose as her big franchise to headline at this point in her career. Or maybe that just speaks to how few high-profile ones there are for actresses, even for in-demand, newly Oscar-winning ones. And having seen her in real life and distinctly remembering her petiteness (though I can see her effortlessly swapping out her naturally demure demeanor for the requisite rugged personality the character calls for) I'm not sure how easy it will be to have her as same sort of physically intimidating presence Croft usually is portrayed as. But I guess that's where movie magic can step in!

It's adapting the reboot games, so she's gonna be playing the very inexperienced and not physically, uh, shapely college-aged Lara Croft.

Nobody saw The Danish Girl or Ex Machina, despite all the accolades. In the States, they received limited runs and a subsequently small box office.

to choose as her big franchise to headline at this point in her career.

Haley Berry, Catwoman. Angelina Jolie, Tomb Raider. Lupita Nyong'o, The Force Awakens.

Lots of performers do this. It's a quick path to international fame and it will quadruple her quote on any other movie she does.

Oh, for sure. I guess I was hung up more on her stature. The second I went on Twitter and saw how others were reacting to it (though, luckily considering who I follow, more people calling it out than the direct sources) made me feel kinda gross commenting on any part of her physicality at all.

I JUST THINK MEGAN IS ONE OF OUR MOST TALENTED STARS AND WILL SIMPLY NOT ACCEPT THIS NEWS, OK?!?!!!!

I hear you, though for Berry and Jolie those choices you mention feel very much like understandable choices of the time (The first big DC Comics movie in the post-Spider-Man / X-Men world! That massive video game people couldn't stop talking/gawking about!), and it makes sense to an extent with Vikander, since I get that the offer of a movie like this is not only one of a nice paycheck and potential franchise reliability but one of sheer enjoyment ― I mean, Jessica Chastain has said in a pretty sincere way in interviews in these last few weeks how The Huntsman was the most fun she's ever had on a set, just she'd never done anything so light and action-y ― but I guess it just seems unexpected that this was Vikander's big post-Oscar choice considering her past résumé, you know? (I just learned that she was in Seventh Son and we will ignore that for the time being.) To some extent it almost makes me wonder if the core material in this adaptation is better than it should be.

Also, now you have a part of me is thinking about how awesome it would've been if Nyong'o got this role, imagining the internet's collective head exploding (with the right people rejoicing).

Well, it's got that typically awful thing where the heroine slides underneath a trap in slow-motion and stares at the deathly contraption with a look that seems to be saying "Oh what the fuck was that that I just slid majestically underneath?"

Don't ask me to prove it, but it's advertising to non-gamers and I believe in pop culture canon the name Lara Croft is more recognizable than the title Tomb Raider.

Here it is:

https://youtu.be/8ndhidEmUbI

This looks like it might fall in that hugely uncomfortable 'damning-with-faint-praise' category of videogame adaptations which are better than the usual crap.

And of course people will respond by saying that it's based on a videogame and therefore was bound to be shit, but I really have no idea why it's so hard to get this sort of thing right.

It's not like they're adapting Bubble Bobble.

Although perhaps I should go easy, it's just a trailer.

I hate it when trailers reveal entire plot setup. Dad leaves her mission, she discovers mission, hires a boat to go to mystery island to lock tomb, boat crashes, villains are there looking for tomb for nefarious reasons, she discovers the tomb...geeeee, I wonder if she'll lock the tomb forever or if the villains will kill her and win.......

Literally the only mystery left is if this video game movie will end with the main character (player) dying and failing the mission.

So at first I was like, Nick Frost? This movie cast both the leads of Into the Badlands? Then I checked IMDB and realized that he's uncredited, which means it's probably just a cameo, and we saw Frost's only scene in the movie in the trailer*. Which made me think, ha, that's probably the case with Dominic West, too.

* Also that is most definitely like a post-credits scene or something.

You're underselling it by calling it nifty.

That makes me want to see it more than the official trailer. Amazing what a change in music can make and how suddenly scenes I had seen already give off a halfway epic feel now.

So basically, fans > Hollywood.
