Week three brings us a director who is more widely seen, perhaps? Joe Dante. Awaken your inner child and vote. Rules can be found here (http://match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=1598).

The Howling (1981) - 5.0
Gremlins (1984) - 5.5
Explorers (1985) - 7.0
Innerspace (1987) - 4.0
The 'burbs (1989) - 3.5
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) - 4.5
Matinee (1993) - 6.5
Small Soldiers (1998) - 6.0

Despite the avatar (I would kill for a full length version of Mant!) I'm not much of a fan.

The Howling - 4
Gremlins - 8.5 (childhood nostalgia? or great children's horror?)
Innerspace - 8 (it's been too long, but this may also be nostalgic)
Gremlins 2 - 9 (seriously, one of the funnier movies I've seen, with something new that I laugh at each time I see it. A great ode to Chuck Jones)
Small Soldiers - 7
Homecoming - 5 (could've been better with good actors)

Despite his attachment to horror, it's his small comedic details that make his movies worth watching. The best part about Homecoming is the grave to G. A. Romero.

I'll watch The Howling before week's end.

Need to see The 'Burbs again; haven't in ages, but had a fun time with it as a kid.

Gremlins (1984) - 6.5
Gremlins 2 (1990) - 9.0
Looney Tunes: Back In Action -6.5

Have seen more, but don't remember them well. Used to be a massive fan when I was younger, and was convinced he was one of the most underrated directors alive. I think he might still be, but the first Gremlins hasn't held up well for me, sadly.

Despite my high ratings, I don't think I'd get too excited and rush out to see a Joe Dante movie. I'll probably never see the Looney Tunes film either.

9.5 for Small Soldiers K-Fan?

Really? Its a really funny, sharp, anti-war satire that features some awesome one-liners and is highly entertaining. I didn't rate it that high, but I can understand why KF likes it.

I gave it a good rating too, but it's rare to see such a high rating from him is all.

Nope. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who doesn't do anything with reviews other than post them here (and the old site, obviously), so I was just writing everything off the top of my head in a post and not saving them anywhere. Now that the old site is finally gone, it's lost forever. And that was early enough that I was actually still writing reviews. :)

First, the whole Gremlin thing as a whole is a problem for me. The rules are a big part of this bother. Even as a kid I never really enjoyed the films. Yes, the second film makes fun itself. Yes, Dante throws in a heavy dose of "relevant" satire. But for me the satire is too over-the-top, the Gremlins just aren't funny and they definitely lost any scariness they might have had in the first film.

The bigger problem to me is that Dante's best film is underseen around these parts. Child versions of Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix plus aliens!!

It was a really half-baked sequel that wasn't near as entertaining or inspired as the original. I watched it a few months ago back to back with the first one, and I didn't enjoy it much at all, especially in comparison.

Half-baked? Arguable, but also the point. Wasn't inspired? In comparison to the story and thrills of Gremlins, more imagination and wit goes into a single joke in Gremlins 2.

Watched The Howling, and that's not good at all. Edited in with a 4.
