This, I think, will prove an interesting supplement to our Match Cut Film Awards (I will continue to lobby for them to be called "The Cutties"). In this thread, I want everyone who is going to vote or contribute a ballot to the awards to list every 2008 film they've seen. Make one post and then edit it as you see/remember more films from 2008. This thread will be finished at the same time as voting for the Cutties closes, and the results announced shortly thereafter.

This will probably seem like a stupid question, but how do people determine all the movies they've seen with a 2008 US release date? I rate every movie I see on imdb, but their release dates bear no resemblance to US ones.

I think this list covers everything I've seen, but I might be wrong:

Synecdoche, NY
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Burn After Reading
Still Life
My Winnipeg
The Dark Knight
Encounters at the End of the World
Man on Wire
Happy Go Lucky
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Iron Man
The X-Files: I Want To Believe
Quantum of Solace
Paranoid Park
I've Loved You So Long
Let the Right One In
Gran Torino
Milk
Rachel Getting Married
Flight of the Red Balloon

If you click 'release dates' on the page for any film, it will show you when it was released in the US. Typically, film festivals are not counted.

Oh. That's what I've always done, but I assumed other people must have a more convenient method. Sometimes there's a few years lag between imdb's date and the US release date, so it seems like a hassle to guess and check with every movie. I guess I'm just lazy.

So we're supposed to go by US release date? Does that apply to most things here? I left London to Brighton off my top ten list because it has a 2006 date on imdb, but that's UK--US is 2008. Or does that just work in this thread?

This thread, the top 10 of 2008 thread, and the 2008 match-cut awards thread all go by US release date. Threads that go further back in time (e.g. the yearly consensus threads) go by the imdb date.

I don't know if "win" is the word I'd apply to the film that ends up on top. If anything, it slightly decreases the validity of any award it picks up at the Match-Cut awards.

Pretty much.
