No idea why I'm posting this thread. I will not see this movie and I'm pretty sure Raiders is the only really big fan of the original.

Though I do admit Garret Dillahunt is a major plus in anything he's in.

That's true.
I've read early reviews that make me hopeful this will improve upon the original.
Plus it has Monica Potter. Rowwr.

I'm a fan of the original as well, but I think a remake with more mundane, less perverted thugs might provide an interesting variation on the story. More The Virgin Spring-y, to boot.
Maybe a neat "Old vs. Young" thing will be established, since these villains look cast really young.
Looks pretty sanitized and generic overall, though. Probably won't be interesting.

What a surprise, a great technical piece that'll match with all the others.
Some day, one of these for-hire directors is going to try and make it special and surprise the crap out of everyone with these remakes.

I'd love for this to happen. Every Asian horror remake I await a trailer for with open arms, but God directors-for-hire suck so much. Who the hell are the Guard brothers and why does The Uninvited look like such ass???

I don't know if I'd consider him a for-hire director yet, but Matt Reeves could with his remake of Let The Right One In.

Depends on what approach he does obviously. Hopefully it's not a simple murder mystery like I fear.

If I didn't know better, I'd call that my favorite trailer for a 2009 film so far. It'll suck, but that was great.

The original is a pile of shit, so the remake couldn't be anything but BETTER. That said, I still won't see it.

The original is a good movie. Hey its a remake of a film that was the remake of another film! Heh. But no I have no interest in seeing this. I doubt it will be as meaningful as Craven's film was.

Saw this one tonight. Every "controversial" thing about the original is replaced with a "happier" version that's tame in today's torture porn film society. To put it easily, it lacks the original's bite. ;)
Goldwyn and Dillahunt were excellent, in fact most of the cast was decent enough. If you took this film's stars, the original's script minus the cops, and either director you might have a good movie. As is, both versions disappoint and succeed only in being mean.
Oh, and the final shot is super hilarious. Unintentionally.

Is there anything that could shock someone by today's standards? What would be the last movie to have done it?

Is there anything that could shock someone by today's standards? What would be the last movie to have done it?Not a lot. The amount of work it took for the first revenge killing to occur got a big gasp from the audience I saw it with, but was (literally) overkill.
Seriously, they stabbed a guy in the heart, then beat him with a fireplace poker, then tried to drown him in the sink for about a minute, then shoved his hand down a running garbage disposal for about 30 seconds, then put the claw of a hammer through the top of his skull and left it. Overkill.
But I think many scenes in the original would have been more shocking than weapons like a shower curtain rod or a broken microwave.
EDIT: I'm not sure on the last shocker in this sense. Must think on this further.

Sexual violence is still very much considered a taboo. Have you seen Deadgirl? I found it shocking for that reason.

This movie is intense! Intense! Has one of the most gruesome rape scenes I've ever seen. Had to look up the actress who plays Mari, Sara Paxton; very convincing and not an easy role to play for a 20 year old. Garret Dillahunt's character is a heartless son of a bitch.

I don't mean for that to be the draw to the movie. But it's extremely realistic and vivid.

Graphic rape on film is distasteful to me. Craven's exploitive use of it just makes me hate him all that much more. And oooh, does he love to exploit it. Makes me wonder if he has a few skeletons in his closet, or if he has some kind of sicko fantasies playing out in that fat head of his.

I understand what you're saying. I wasn't expecting it to be this intense actually. I was expecting it to be on the lines of the Hills Have Eyes remake maybe...(again Craven) which wasn't nearly as graphic as this scene.
BTW, i watched the unrated version of the movie. Not sure if it has a different ending than the theatrical version.
Microwave head explode scene. Which was also the worst part of the movie. Unnecessary use of gore for one last cheap thrill.

The rape scene in Hills Have Eyes unrated was pretty graphic. It was filmed in a fairly salacious way, too, which made me lose an awful lot of respect for that French bastard who directed it -- I'm blanking on his name and don't care enough to check the IMDb. I don't think it could've made my lack of respect for Craven any lack-ier than it already was, though.
