Starting off the year with Will. Rules remain the same.

For those wondering what he's doing now... Opera.

Huh. Thought I'd seen more.

The Exorcist - 7.5

In terms of pure atmosphere, this film has it all. However, I don't think the sum of its parts add up to all that much. Beautifully shot, though.

Surely, Blue Chips can't be as good as I thought. I mean, a movie with Shaq getting a score higher than 5?

Dreamdead, what parts exactly didn't you like about Exorcist? It's as strong as they come, taking on a factual, philosophical, and emotional approach. The procedural angle interests me more than some of the actual horror.

The French Connection (1971) - 9.0
The Exorcist (1973) - 7.5

I haven't seen The Exorcist in years so I could be wrong, but I recall it being a not entirely successful blend of atmospheric psychological horror, and the more outrageous 'gross-out' kind of horror. For me, the film was at its best when very little actually happened due to its strong, unsettling mood. But when things did happen, (the puking, the headspin, etc.) it sometimes felt silly and ineffective.

The puking and headspin, for me, are done without buildup, and play pretty straightforward to me. Sometimes they even come out of nowhere. The effects may be a bit dated, but I still find it tremendously effective.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose modernizes the effects, but it's trying to take the approach exactly the same, and ends up hurting itself.

It took two viewings but I've gotta agree this film is pretty amazing.

Guess that's all.

EDIT: I would like to see 'Boys in the Band'. It seems kind of unique.

I actually did see The Guardian too when I was a kid but I don't remember a damn thing about it other then I think it involved an evil tree and possibly paganism. Apparently I'm the only one here who's seen it. Go me!

The only thing to watch out for is the score by Wang Chung (which I love). It will really test your threshold for 80s synth scores.

I'm curious as to which version of The Exorcist people have been rating. While I've never seen the reworked version to make any comparisons, I've read that he was an atheist when he made the original version and reworked it as a response to his becoming a born again Christian. Supposedly, the ending was changed in a way that inverted its meaning, bringing it in line with his new belief system.

I don't think the ending changed, but the spider scene was added, a few frames of the demon throughout the movie, and probably some added effects.

Oh wait, I think there's an extended scene at the end between the new Priest talking about the movies.

Yes they changed the ending (for the worst IMO) It's not that bad but the original had such a perfect, haunting final shot of the steps outside of Reagan's window and then the music comes in and fade to black. Perfect! No need to change it.

Why do so many people hate The Hunted?

That movie is bad ass.

One of the best knife fights ever filmed, and the entire thing is simply overflowing with tension.

I feel bad just jumping in and out of the Director Consensus thing.

I think if I just do the occasional one, I'm throwing the results off.
