View Full Version : Films that NEED a Franchise Reboot

Dukefrukem

We all complain about films that don't need franchise reboots, the Crow (http://www.match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=1610), Alien (http://www.match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=1553), Friday the 13th (http://www.match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=1086), but which films NEED a franchise reboot.

My pick, Robocop!

What's yours?

Is this a trick question? It's a trick question, right?

Franchises give Hollywood the economy they need to make the "smaller" films I enjoy, but I can't say I think any franchise needs a reboot.

Are we just naming the ones we want, or the ones that are already in production? 'Cause Robocop is.

I'm guessing Robocop is still just a crazy thought on Aranofsky's head, same as his Batman movie was for a while. Which doesn't mean it won't be done by another director eventually.

Regardless, I don't think it needs a reboot - the first movie is gold and the sequels are mediocre to bad. Period. I'm tired as all fuck of reboots, remakes or reinterpretations.

No films really need a reboot, unless they just sucked in the first place.

Like Spawn. A reboot of that, done correctly could do wonders.

Mm? It's already in pre-production for a 2010 release. They announced during this year's Comic Con that MGM already signed Aronofsky as director.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen anymore.

Aronofsky was on Howard Stern a few days ago and said the project has faded away from his thoughts.

I'd like to see some of the old 80s fantasy cheesefests redone, like Krull. Maybe Beastmaster.

(And as much as I liked Big Trouble in Little China, I think that could use an upgrade/update too)

While I love Aronofsky, he seems to wander to whatever idea is currently shiniest in his head...and he seems a little ADD about picking projects, and fully getting on with one.

While I generally don't like the idea of remakes for the sake of remakes, I like the idea of taking movies from the past that aren't well known and/or weren't good, and making a genuine attempt to improve them.

I also like when remakes aren't simple remakes of the same story, but they take it in a different direction, to the point where it's just loosely inspired by the original.

For example, Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead was a whole different beast from the original, and it was all the better for it.

I thought DeNiro's monster was good, but aside from that, there wasn't much. Perhaps it requires a revisit ... but, I doubt that'll happen any time soon.

Say what?? For real?
Yep. From IMDb: "...a planned trilogy. The third would have either featured Phibes fighting a group of Nazis, or him searching for the key to Olympus. A film treatment still exists for the latter. The title would have been Phibes Resurrectus, The Seven Fates of Dr. Phibes or The Brides of Dr. Phibes."

When this originally circulated back in the mid-to-late 70's (after Jaws), Spielberg's name was associated with the project, as he had been a big fan of the original films. It would have been a hell of a project. I wonder if the bit about Phibes fighting a group of Nazis was the groundwork for Raiders? I dunno, but I do know that Spielberg + Price would have earned my $$$.

So my answer will be ridiculous, too.

Darren Aronofsky and Terry Gilliam alternating and half-collaborating on installments in a reboot of the Star Wars series.

When I wore my avatar that said "I <3 Sequels & Remakes" I did so with the caveat that I think they can be very worthwhile if someone has something they want to do with it. I can't be opposed to them on basic principle. However, I don't think any series "needs" a reboot, unless the jerks behind it decide it's time for one or someone has a really good idea for it. Because why?

Come on man, the whole point of the thread is series that were enjoyable and went to hell or started bad but were based on interesting source material. Those are the series that fit the definition of 'need' as proposed by the thread. If you don't like the term Need then substitute it for 'Should Be' Rebooted because for the purposes of this thread they are roughly equivalent.

Miller will write and direct his own big-screen take on the comic serial; while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it's expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.

I wish that when they reboot simplistic action films, they try to at least turn it on its axis. The 2005 remake of Assault on Precinct 13 was bad, but I liked that they flipped it so that it's a criminal trying to defend the station from being attacked by cops. Death Wish could use something like that. I mean, it's 2018. This is such an outdated premise. At least make him go kill people who take away healthcare or something.

Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Loved the first movie. Like the book, video game, and television show before it, the movie did a perfect job of being the best movie it could, based on the original radio play. Each different adaptation focuses on the strengths of their mediums. The film is unjustifiably vilified by the fans, and was one of the final straws that forced me to reject all kinds of fandom and geek culture. The movie is hilarious, well-acted, looks incredible (especially for the budget), and is a joy.

This should be a franchise.

It's really hard to remember that fandoms aren't composed fully of their worst elements when DC fans are protesting for a non-existent Zack Snyder Justice League cut and Star Wars fans draw up online petitions to de-canonize the most recent film. The entitled outrage from those portions gets so loud so quickly.

And the Hitchhiker movie is hardly perfect but has a lot of laughs and its heart in the right place. I still remember that tour of the planet-making factory. Genuinely awe-inspiring.
