If you're in the mood for a holiday viewing, try Santa Conquers the Martians, but otherwise I would suggest The Beatniks.

Dreamdead suggests Final Sacrifice.

From the files of my old VHS collection (I taped these off the old Comedy Central airings). It's been a long time, but I remember having especially fond memories of those marked with a *.

Huge vote for Space Mutiny. It's awesome.

Otherwise, Manos: Hands of Fate is an acknowledged classic, and Cave Dwellers is a stitch. (I have two friends that got married because of that episode. Really.)

Great list Russ.

With this show, it seems like everyone has their own favorites.

Ask 10 people what the best episode is, and you're likely to get 10 vastly different answers. So, if multiple people start recommending the same episode, there is a very good chance that it is worthy.

My favorites:

I Accuse My Parents
Side Hackers
Bride of the Monster
Catalina Caper
Pod People
Eegah

And...

Shorts V. 1 and 2, especially Hired Parts 1 and 2, and Jr. Rodeo

I greatly prefer the episodes hosted by Joel. While Mike's writing is great, I never cared for his delivery.

Ah, Soultaker. I actually saw that film non-MST3K during my Insomnia Semester in London. It was on late-night tv, and I thought, "What is this crap? Is that Martin Sheen?"

(It's not. It's Joe Estevez, the sheep even blacker than Emilio.)

Anyhoo, I came home and found out it had been MST3K'd, which was ridiculously exciting.

Honestly, this show has one of the ballsiest concepts ever divined. One of television's/cinema's finest moments. The Gamera films are indeed worth your time. I prefer monsters to space, myself. But just about anything works.

Danger: Diabolik is pretty standard on many lists.

I've come to have very little tolerance for this show and its spawn, RiffTrax. And everybody always seems to want to talk to me about how great RiffTrax are.

Adding love for Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Some other of my favorites:

Hercules and the Captive Women ("Boy, these mountains sure make you feel small...")
Eegah ("How do you do?" // "I'm really, really dead.")
Rocketship X-M ("How do we stand on fuel now?" // "I'm for it.")
The Day the Earth Froze ("Forge...a SAMPO!!")
Teenagers from Outerspace ("Yes, but what about TORTCHA!!!")

Also, you need to try and find the following shorts:

Mr. B Natural (in front of War of the Colossal Beast)
Design for Dreaming (in front of 12 to the Moon).

Ivan Drago
12-20-2008, 12:17 AM
Eegah! is another one of my favorites.

Indeed, I've seen clips online and they don't do a thing for me at all - it actually seemed to ruin the unintentional humor of the dreadful films. The only time being snarky about a movie is acceptable is when

(a) you (and friends) are doing the heckling
(b) it is solely for your own amusement
(c) you are drunk

All three must be satisfied.

Not that I think this strategy will turn people around who don't think MST3K is funny (I actually don't think that at all), but for whatever it's worth, whenever I have to introduce someone to MST3K, I make a point not to start them off with an MST3K of a really really cheesy, really kitschy/trashy, too easily mockable movie. 80s films are off-the-table, for instance. Always a B&W one. I've used before I Accuse Your Parents, The Undead, and Red Zone Cuba. The one (first) time I used a color film ('Time Travelers' or 'Time Chasers' or something?), the results were negative.

Never showed that guy any more MST3K, though, so my data is obviously incomplete.

Well, I don't know if this applies to your post or not, but when I watched the actual cut of Manos a couple days ago that someone graciously posted on YouTube, I could remember enough of the MST riffs because I had seen the episode enough. So I was able to survive.

MST3K The Movie

"Gentlemen, we can't all be the Honey Nut Cheerios honeybee."

I love this one, obviously. It's become a holiday staple. My other faves are "Hercules and the Captive Women," "Agent Double 007," "Eegah" and..well, there's too many.

The one with Raul Julia was strangely endearing with its Matrix-esque story and public television production value.

As host: Joel or Mike?

I'm a Joel guy. I love Mike's writing, but Joel's stoned-out, droopy delivery makes me laugh more.

Dead & Messed Up
07-18-2013, 04:20 PM
Joel. I like his delivery, I like how he had the paternal relationship with the robots, and his affinity for cheap prop comedy revealed that he had more sympathy for the DIY nature of most of the movies they watched. His mockery came more from disappointment. Mike's delivery felt more smug to me, I wasn't as big on his put-upon frat brother relationship with the 'bots, and his era's bumpers (disregarding the sheer awful of Pearl/Bobo/Brain Guy) lacked the conceptual fun of Joel's.

Disregarding host qualities, can't deny that some of the Mike episodes are lightning-paced zingfests that outpace the best of Joel's era. "Werewolf" and "Space Mutiny" are two that come immediately to mind.

My biggest fears with streaming - that things will become so fragmented with different services because all of the providers want their own little piece of the pie - are quickly becoming a reality.

Once again, big media is proving to be very anti-consumer.

They need to pick a single provider, and have everything available in one place. I'm not about to subscribe to numerous services to get stuff. I'll just go without. Fortunately for me, it's just entertainment, and not worth it the time, money, and effort to keep track of what's available through each service.

Put it all at the bottom, center-aligned, hyphens to denote when more than one person is talking, but otherwise no distinguishing between the film and the "riffers." It's not a great way, but there's no good way to caption the density of what's happening.

The original local Minnesota "season 0" episodes were mostly live riffed, and they aren't very good.

Yeah, they're pretty awful. Scripting was better for the show.

But I would agree that jokes that seem more reactionary and less contrived play a lot better.

Personally, I love it when they have a running gag that builds to something.

I.E., Sherry's Birthday Party in Space Mutiny.

IN RETROSPECT. When it first appeared there was nothing like it, and it was awesome. Channel 23 KTMA REPREZENT! But, yeah, I'm no longer able to enjoy those early "Seasion 0" eps. They also re-did a bunch for Comedy Central.

Noted. I imagine it had to be similarly awesome to when I first discovered the show, and the novelty of the format itself was mindblowing.

I've been watching a lot of episodes recently because it is a show that brings me joy, and I have to say there's a quality to old '50s B-movies that's really absent in cheap bad movies these days. I guess it's because they had the tools of the studio system propping them up in those days, but movies like Daddy-O or It Conquered the World have that sort of ratta tatta tat delivery of dialogue and somehow fully orchestrated scores that taken all together are kind of enjoyable in their own right. The low hanging fruit they make these days just isn't the same. Where's the joy to be had in making fun of an Asylum feature?

I'm watching one of the MSTK 4 pack of episodes that they had at my local public library. The Magic Sword doesn't suck enough to be a truly funny episode, but I did love Alien From LA in terms of laughs (my God that film is beyond awful). Now I'm watching Danger: Death Ray and its really bad film that is resulting in some great jokes and one-liners from the trio. I haven't seen The Mole People episode in years but I'm looking forward to it.

PS: I agree with Nec but only in terms of the older movies at least being truly god awful. I can't even fully hate on Twilight when I know its probably a bunch of boring mediocre films that tailor to teens. I watched the Transformers series and even I noticed that the 2nd one although being bad the worst of Micheal Bay still isn't even remotely as shitty as say, Manos: The Hands of Fate or The Skydivers.

A buddy of mine likes bad movies, but doesn't like MST3K for some reason. It's kind of annoying, 'cause he keeps lending me stuff and I have to sift through the shit to find something worth seeing. He lent me a double-feature with Alien From LA but now that I know it's a MST3K movie, I'd rather just watch that instead.

He recently got a copy of Hobgoblins, too. I told him to watch the MST3K version, but I don't think he will. It's really kind of depressing.

If it was "Monster a-Go-Go," I'd understand. That's one episode where they completely fail to enliven the feature (it's not their fault in that case). At least Manos has a kind of demented imagination, with the Master and Torgo and the bride fight and the hints of eldritch lore.

I've made it all the way through Manos minus the MSTK commentary twice. I thought my brain was going to melt but I survived.

Right now I'm on The Mole People. I put Gamera and The Final Sacrifice on my Instant Viewing queue. And yes I'll be checking YouTube as well for any and all episodes. I've got 10 years worth to catch up on, although I did view the series finale. Too bad I watched it before I had seen any Bava movies so I didn't really get that it was actually supposed to be a spoof of spy movies.

The very end of the last segment. Granted, it was just the puppets, no lines, but since Jim Mallon's traditionally been very conservative with letting them be used anywhere, it's pretty cool.

Oh snap, I forgot about the Arrested Development cameo! Trace actually voiced Crow in that one.
