That explains it. I hate twitter with a fiery passion. And yet I feel compelled to start using it in order to self-promote. Gah.

You guys do know that Instagram is more of a social network than it is a photography suite, right?

I think the problem with haters isn't as much with the people taking the pictures for fun as it is with the culture around it which praises the pics for being so artistic and cool.

Personally, I don't care either way, but I understand Qrazy and ETM. I'm mostly bugged by the few FB friends that post pics all the time of stupid shit.

Actually, most of them are framed perfectly for the given aspect ratio. Really nice stuff.

A picture is more than just an aspect ratio.

Actually, most of them are framed perfectly for the given aspect ratio. Really nice stuff.

Obviously, I disagree. There's nothing wrong with the square format, medium format cameras have been rocking it with success for ages, but medium format cameras shoot on square film. It's their field of view. And the amount of detail they produce is staggering, so that's always been the draw of the format. These are just wide shots from a bad quality wide angle lens which have been forced into a square. When you have that strong feeling that you're not seeing the whole image, that's when you know it's wrong.

You guys sound like a bunch of audio and videophiles, concerned more with the technical aspects than the content.

This is like what I hear constantly on another, general, forum, in their photo thread: people come in with snapshots which have no further value than their own amusement, someone critiques them regarding composition, unnecessary processing, focus, and they get offended.

I mean, photography IS art, and people have been taking it apart ever since it was invented, to find out why some images "work". There are no "rules", just guidelines that came from vast previous experience. It's probably easier to learn to frame correctly in a split second than it is to put the image into an arbitrary square, share it with your aunts, and call it "creative".

It can be art, but more often than not photographs are a neat way that people remember things.

So either it's art and you're defending the above pictures artistic merits and they're framed 'perfectly' or they are neat ways that people remember things.

Or would you prefer to back peddle your argument and recognize that we are in fact extremely concerned with the content.

---

Triangular photography doesn't make much sense but circular photography definitely does given that lenses are circular.

I went to Colonial Williamsburg a couple summers ago and was disappointed. We went on a terrible "haunted" tour which essentially took us to several spots that weren't haunted while pointing out along the way buildings that were supposed to be really haunted (utterly perplexing), but what really got to me was how close modern civilization had encroached on the experience. I was expecting it to be sort of secluded, so you could get lost in the experience. What I got was a quaint town surrounded by Barnes and Nobles and Starbucks and such, all within view from almost any spot in town.

Wow that was not my experience at all, it was way more than I was expecting and the reenactors were incredibly knowledgeable. Actually the best part was what they don't advertise, the massive folk art museum, the top level of which is a restored 18th century insane asylum. Very cool.

Well, we were only there for a day, just passing through, so I'm sure we didn't get everything out if it we could, but yes, it was definitely a disappointment. My guess is we did all of the really lame, super-touristy things, being pressed for time, and missed out on everything interesting.

No, but mostly. TBH I'm not doing much serious looking, as I'm not really focused on hurrying into grad school right now. I have endlessly itchy feet and need to cross some things (read countries) off my bucket list before tying myself down again. What kind of law are you in?

I'd take as much time off as you reasonably can. I had three years between undergrad and law school, and I definitely think that time off was important for me. I just recently started working in-house for a corporation -- doing mostly transactional work. Spent a number of months gaining litigation experience as an extern for the CA Dept. of Justice before that.

Sounds awesome, congrats on your new gig. I do have a little experience as an intern in litigation for the NY dept of labor mostly for UI arbitration, which I liked at first but got real boring real quick, but that might just be because I was note bitch. Too late. a few well placed blows from a spike and a sledge hammer, one toward the upper left, one along the bottom toward the right, and a third to the right of the wall art, and that entire wall comes down.

So my brother is severely autistic and it's so hard to get good pictures of him since he doesn't really understand what cameras are. But we were having his 20th birthday party the other day and on the iphone you can do the reverse picture so you can see what you're taking a picture of, and him seeing himself made for some amazing pictures. Here are the best ones.

The second picture is of us on the ferris wheel. I was nervous because those can be kind of scary, but she'd been doing so well I figured we'd give it a shot. (We'd been out for about five hours by this time-- notice how wilted and sweaty.) Our seat got up to the top, and she shouted, "I LIKE THIS!"

The sad thing is that I don't think they believe there will ever be this kind of tolerance from the church, at least not from the church that we all know. The good thing is they believe that something new and better will grow from the ashes.

Burned out from it all. Different careers now. And they're growing increasingly at odds with local churches, and, unfortunately, old friends and family.

They want to open up a interfaith community center, and my dad would like to move into full-time hospice or prison chaplain service.

Damn. My sympathies, or to whatever extent I can give them.

That sounds like a fantastic idea, btw. With all of the heat between religions, community centers dedicated to celebrating the virtues of all faiths should be encouraged and actively condoned.

There used to be a photography thread, right?

Anyway, can anyone recommend a good still camera. Price limit around 300 dollars. I'm a casual user, but I'd really like to be able to take pretty pictures when I travel.

I've tried to google it a bit, but there are a million different models and I have no idea what to look for.

Started an old school recording project last night. 16-track, reel-to-reel, no sequencers, no computers. It's going to be awesome. It's a '70s style electronic project.

I'll take a 12 gauge over a flame thrower any day. Better stopping power, and you don't have to worry about setting everything on fire. And as an added bonus, you don't have to worry about BEING BLOWN THE FUCK UP.

Guys, guys...are you forgetting what aliens have for blood? Hudson nearly got his arm melted off blowing away an alien. Hicks got splattered in the elevator. The acid took down Drake too. There's a benefit to the flamethrowers. Aliens hate fire! They don't understand the threat of a gun but they understand the threat of fire! Sure they're not as good if an alien is charging at you but they can keep the alien from charging in the first place.

Mainly just Canon's base 55-250 IS zoom lens for those zoo ones . I also have a nice 60mm USM macro, which is awesome, and what I really want to get is the Canon Macro lens that can do 1x-5x magnification all in one.

The 55-250 IS is a good lens for the price, and the 60mm macro is awesome (I've been using my friend's 100mm 2.8., though, and it's fantastic). So you're interested in extreme magnification? :) The MP-E 65mm looks like a cool choice, but a cool grand is a bit too much unless you're really into it. Have you looked into some cheaper ways to do it? I've used an inexpensive Sigma 70-300 with a reversed 50mm, and I got interesting results (http://s734.beta.photobucket.com/user/fotoizleti2009/media/EURO%20hologram/07.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0) even by just holding it in my hand, without a reverse adapter.

From my understanding and reading reviews, it's pretty much the same build in terms of parts, quality, etc. The 5D III has some better high end features like 61 points of autofocus, which would be nice, but does that justify spending thousands more for it? Eh, I doubt it for me.

Plus at this point you're probably better going for the 4K Black Magic camera when that comes out rather than the Mark III. But yeah man, 6D sounds good, go for it. But just remember the glass is as if not more important than the body. So if you only have so much money to burn and you want more lenses you might be better off doing that first and see what happens technology-wise with camera bodies.

Why is that actual HDR? Are you suggesting Barty and I are taking faux-HDR? Is that what you're trying to say ETM???

TV, 1000 shutter speed. I was ready to go. Pretty much got every single shot of it in focus and decently sharp, was rather proud of my planning for it.
