View Full Version : Match Cut Director Consensus -- YEAR 4

Ezee E
12-14-2008, 12:15 PM
I'll go ahead and post this in case people want to get rentals set up.

This is the page where the rules and results are posted for the Directorial Consensus and where the list of upcoming directors is displayed. Feel free to discuss ratings, results and suggest upcoming directors within this thread.

The Rules of the Game:

How to post selections:

- Assign a rating to each film based on a scale of 1-10
- Half points may be used
- It is not necessary to rank the films. Instead, please post all lists in chronological order, starting with the earliest film.
- A film must be thirty (30) minutes in length to be counted.

For a film to be eligible for the director's overall rating, it must have at least four (4) votes. Otherwise, there isn't a sufficient amount of votes to make the rating as objective or effective as a film that has received twenty (20) votes. If a film is mentioned only once or twice, I will still post that film's average (quite easy if only mentioned once) but I wil separate it from the films that factor into the director's overall rating.

--

Here is the plan for the year. Naturally, let me know if you have any problems with any of the weeks and they may or may not be looked at. Obviously, every director could not fit. I may have picked a director that we already used. If so, let me know.

Discuss!

No, since I caught it, I'm choosing and it will be a toss-up between Corman and Claire Denis. But, let's not be hasty, he may have not been done. I just feel confident I remember rating him and compiling the results.

No idea. I'd feel like I'd have seen at least a few of his films if we were to have done him at some point.

For a movie that tries to spoof Hitchcock, which should be a good target, fails miserably.

I like it when it's not trying to spoof him at all, such as the man that can't pick up the suitcase, or the orchestra playing the "score" on the highway next to Mel Brooks' car.

This is still happening? How is Brakhage week gonna work considering about 80% of his massive output is what most would define as "short"?

I wanted to bring it to the curator's attention that Criterion is

a) Releasing a Imamura collection called Pigs, Pimps and Prostitutes featuring three of what are supposedly considered to be some of his best films, on May 19, after voting for the said director is over, and

b) In the process of putting together a by Brakhage Volume 2 collection, which should be released later this year.

So it may be wise to put these off a while so people could see more of the movies. My opinion.

Yeah, I was actually going to suggest switching with Pollack but apparently did not make a post when I thought I did.

Schrader has a new film, Adam Resurrected, which I'm going to assume will be released on DVD at some point this year, though I can't find any information about that. It opened in NY/LA back in December.

Yeah I've only seen bits and pieces of some of his documentaries. I am going to try and watch the upcoming one he's made about the state parks, but I don't always commit to these sorts of things.

He has plenty available on Netflix. Jazz is one of them. Civil War may be on there.

HIGHLY recommend Unforgivable Blackness, and of course, Baseball.

His problem is that a good number of his films are 10+ hours. I'm interested in a couple of his works, but don't see myself investing the time to watch any of them before his week. I have seen Baseball and Civil War, but I watched them when they first came on TV years ago.

Unforgivable Blackness is three hours, and many of the Instant Watch movies are an acceptable length.

I have seen five of Burns' films. Civil War, Baseball and Unforgivable Blackness are good, Jazz is not and I remember almost nothing of The Shakers which I think I viewed in my freshman year in some world culture/religion class.

He's worth doing though I do think no film will have at more than five or six votes.

soitgoes is looking to take some time away from MC, and will no longer be putting scores together for the consensus'. If anyone is interested, please let me know!

I can do it; I have free time, and I like calculating and tallying and stuff.
