Sorry, I should have posted this earlier.

I have turned off registration to the site. We don't get new members every day, so rather than having to spend the whole day deleting the 12 or 13 spam accounts that attempt to register, I just turned off the function. I figured the loss would likely be minimal. We mainly get new members on word of mouth, so...

If you know someone who wants to join, PM me. I'll open it up for that brief period, still requiring my approval first, and the person can join. You'll need to tell me what user name they have chosen so I can allow that specific person to register.

I realize we may lose a few people who stumble by the site and wish to join and would add good contributions. But, I think for now it's a loss I'm willing to take. I still encourage everyone to get as many people as you can interested in joining the site. I don't want to plateau but to keep adding new, useful members to the site. We can still grow, but I just have to keep a close eye and this for me is the easiest way.

Thanks.

No. I have no interest in preventing anyone but spammers to join. I'm not screening for quality or dedication. I just have to find a way to prevent spamming.

Yes, I answered that seriously. I want to make sure we don't slowly die away because we never get any new blood.

I can be dedicated, Raiders.
Just give me a chance.

Since we must keep those posters who are left remaining, that means the mods lose power.

Time to riot!

Every time I go to look at who's online, I see someone new is registering. Sometimes they appear that they might be legit, but others are obvious spammer names, and the only new poster to surface seems to have been StanleyK.

In just the few days it has been opened, I have probably deleted over 100 spam accounts. There are four new users who I strongly believe are not spam. So far, I have been right about one (StanleyK). We'll see about the others.

It is fairly easy for most new accounts to simply use the online spam registries to catch spammers. I'm sure a couple will slip through, but in general this is not much of a burden and I'm glad I re-opened the registration.

is it possible with this software to add a question that needs to be answered by a human to the registration page? something like, "what is 2 + 5?" they did that on another board i post on and it dramatically reduced the number of spammers registering.

hmmm, i don't wanna push my luck or anything, but why was I allowed to register? i joined like a couple of days ago and you guys deleted my account so i figured screw it. but then, just for the heck of it, i registered again and now i'm activated. so what's the deal?

I don't remember deleting your account the first time. I'm sorry about that. I have actually beefed up security in the registration process and have found much less spammers trying to register, but not to the point where I will stop closely monitoring all new potential members.

In any case, thanks for coming back and registering again and welcome to the site. Glad to have you.
