Depp And Burton To Remake Dark Shadows

4 December 2008 10:59 AM, PST

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are teaming up once again for a big-screen adaptation of the popular Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, according to a top Hollywood producer.

In a recent interview, producer Richard D. Zanuck confirmed rumours the longterm collaborating pair, whose next project Alice in Wonderland is slated for release in 2010, would take on their eighth film together.

Zanuck tells Collider.com, "I'm doing next summer - with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp - Dark Shadows, which is an old '70s soap opera (that aired) here in the United States."

And starring in the film will be a dream come true for Depp - who was obsessed with the spooky programme as a child.

Zanuck adds: "(Depp) was obsessed, as a young person (with Dark Shadows). He used to sneak out of school to get home to turn on the television set. It was a very popular show for about four or five seasons."

Tim Burton & Johnny Depp - [everything kind of dark and quirky, from now on till forever]

What's weird is while this is boring news, I can't say that I've disliked any of their collabs.

I'm more interested in them teaming up for White Makeup. Or Dark Corpse. Or Corpse Scissorhands. Or Ed Todd.

Wow, I forgot all about that crazy show. When I was a kid Sci-Fi channel would air reruns of it. I recall it being something of a vampire soap opera, heh. As for Burton and Depp making it into a movie, I have no idea why.

How is it 'groupthink' and not a 'consensus'? Because you don't like opinion being expressed?

I'm not sure what answer you are looking for here, so I'm going to go for......

Yes.

Or no.

Maybe.

I think you are maybe too worried about semantics regarding an opinion (mine) that you disagree with.

Possibly.

Corpse Bride is a strikingly pointless movie. I remember walking out of the theater I was taken aback by how inconsequential it was.

Yeah, me neither. As someone said, Corpse Bride is very inconsequential, but apart from that, they both do their best work when together.

I don't even remember Corpse Bride.

But I love how everyone complains about Burton and Depp working together all the time when Scorsese and De Niro worked together all the time in the past and now he's doing everything with DiCaprio. Some directors have favorite actors to work with.

I think people are complaining more about the fact that they only colaborate in goth-fests like Sleepy Hollow or Sweeney Todd.

Still is an unfair claim. Ed Wood and Chocolate Factory have very different styles.

It wouldn't bother me if I didn't think Johnny Depp was completely miscast in most of their recent collaborations. Burton seems to be under the impression that Depp can do everything.

"Who should play Willy Wonka? Why Johnny Depp of course! Sweeney Todd? Johnny Depp! The Mad Hatter?! Johnny Depp!!"

I suggest news writers copy the above statement for efficiency.

Agreed, it's like no one enjoyed any of their goth collaborations before. I'd rather watch first before judging, and Corpse Bride while not a a classic, was still an enjoyable animation.

looks like it's next after Alice (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/16547)

‘Dark Shadows’ is happening," Depp tells Collider. "Tim is working on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with ‘Alice’ and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.”

I know you’re in the first week of “Dark Shadows.” How do you usually ease the cast and crew into a production?"
]"Its been hard to kind of come here because Im just starting, and its a weird tone and its a lot of actors and, you know, were not starting with the simple stuff; we're sort of getting right in there. You like to kind of sneak up on it a little bit, but this one we just kind of slammed right into it"

It’s based on a soap opera. Will it have that soapy quality?
"Yes, I dont know. Im early into it because its a funny tone, and thats part of what the vibe of the show is, and theres something about it that we want to get. But when you look at it, its pretty bad. Im hoping that it will be -- its early days, lets put it -- Im very intrigued by the tone. Its a real ethereal tone were trying to go for and I dont know yet

starring Johnny Depp, Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, Cloe Moretz, Eva Green and Michelle Pfeiffer is NOT being shot in 3-D for its May 11, 2012 release

It was a daytime soap opera that had 250 episodes a season. If you're thinking of watching the series from the beginning, good luck.

That trailer looked bad to me. Most of the jokes felt one notch too far, like Johnny Depp was too busy digging into the formal rhythm of his character to nail the comedic rhythm. But it's just a trailer, and a poorly edited one at that.

Problem is that this only reminds me of the last Burton/Depp collab, and how awful it was.
