I Don't Want to Sleep Alone - 9
The Wayward Cloud - 8.5
What Time is it There? - 8.5
The River - 8.5

Feels like I've seen more, hmm. I have a feeling The River will improve on a second viewing; something tells me it's his masterpiece. That ending...

One of the most interesting stylists working today, with a consistent thematic undercurrent and a wonderful unity of directing and acting.

That's as far as I've gone so far. I keep making plans to return to his filmography and then never get around to it for whatever reason. The River is next.

Ooh, his To Each His Own Cinema short was really lovely too.

Yes, the ending is great. I vastly prefer the warmer and more vibrant aesthetic and color palette of The Wayward Cloud, though. The River too often fell into tedium for me to say it's great, not to mention I feel I'm missing some things thematically. It also dragged in and around the middle. I was hooked for the last 45 minutes or so, however. I tried watching What Time Is It There? a few months ago and ended up stopping it. It was inert. It did have a better visual aesthetic than The River, though.

Bah, What Time is It There is understated but it's superior to The Wayward Cloud.

I've only seen What Time Is It There? and Goodbye, Dragon Inn.

I refuse to reduce my opinion of either film into a numerical score. They were both really good and effectively thought-provoking, and even occasionally humorous in an absurd sort of way. I may have preferred Goodbye, Dragon Inn because I felt he toyed around with his static shots and long takes in more interesting ways.

Plus, there's an elegiac tone to it that I found particularly affecting as well as this creepy, supernatural element to it that I can't exactly account for, but that I certainly found intriguing.

Although there are heart-breaking moments in What Time Is It There? that left a mark on me.

Both films deserve a re-watch, even though I watched them recently. There is a dense amount of significance worth mining in his films. Can't expect to do it through one viewing.

A better way of saying this would have been not to say this.

Only seen I Don't Want to Sleep Alone. Loved that one.

I also think he's said this multiple times.

I'm not only not going to reduce my opinions of his films to a numerical score, but I'm not going reduce them to opinions or words. I have too much goddamned respect for Tsai Ming-Liang to let anyone know how I feel about his films. Sorry.

No. I was merely accounting for my lack of a numerical score. That fact really didn't need be pounced upon, either.

Edit:

I also think he's said this multiple times.

Okay, I guess I have said it once before, but at that point I said "I don't like reducing a film to a numerical score." Someone pointed out that I wasn't reducing the film, but merely reducing my opinion, so I sought to use the more appropriate phrasing whenever the next opportunity came up. Which is now.

But since my repetitious habits have been so acutely observed, singled out, and frowned upon (for whatever reason), I'll refrain from ever saying it again. :|

Eh. Understated isn't really a problem. That film was dead on arrival. I'll give it another shot after I see more from him.

We've all got our bad traits.

'Cept the mods of course. Nothing wrong with them.

I find his style interesting, but I'm afraid I usually end up feeling bored by it. There's only so much stasis I can handle.

Rebels of the Neon God just came from Netflix. This will be my first encounter with the guy.
