Director Sylvester Stallone is bringing another star from the 80's into his upcoming action free-for-all The Expendables. While on the red carpet at the premiere for Transporter 3, Stallone revealed to Review Nation that he's bringing in his Rocky IV co-star Dolph Lundgren to appear in his next film which also co-stars Jet Li and Jason Statham.
Stallone will likewise appear in the film along with writing and directing it.
Plot Concept: The movie follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator.

Whitaker and Bullock join:
It seems we may have another reunion on our hands in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action adventure The Expendables. Just a few weeks after the trades confirmed that War's Jet Li and Jason Statham were joining the mercenary team for writer-director Stallone, JoBlo now reports that he is looking to bring in his Demolition Man co-star Sandra Bullock as well. If true, she will be starring alongside Sly, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker and Randy Couture.
Dave Davis reports "Bullock would play a government agent (paired up with Whitaker) on the hunt for Stallone's crew of hired guns."
On a related front, Clint from Moviehole has a breakdown of the main characters which some of the actors above will be filling. You can check it out by clicking here.
Quite a cast!

While Bullock may have left the project, Mickey goddamn Rourke has joined!!
Another 80's era tough guy is joining Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action adventure The Expendables. Variety reports that Mickey Rourke has joined Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Dolph Lungdren while Forest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley are still circling the project for Nu Image/Millennium Films. Stallone penned the screenplay and will direct.
Avi Lerner, John Tompson and Kevin King Templeton are producing, with Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort executive producers. Production will begin in March.
Plot Concept: "The Expendables" follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator. Rourke will play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for the mercs.

OK, this is getting ridiculous now – former wrestler turned low-rent straight-to-DVD action star, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, has become the latest macho macho man to join the cast of Sylvester Stallone’s extraordinarily exciting action movie, The Expendables.
He joins a cast of the toughest men in the world, including Stallone himself, The Stath, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Arnold Schwarzenegger (in a brief, brief cameo), Mickey Rourke, Forest Whitaker, Gordon Ramsay, Martin Skrtel, Wolf off of Gladiators, and Dick & Dom.
There’s no word yet on who ‘Stone Cold’ Steve, as he likes us to call him, will be playing in the mercenaries go wild action flick, but we imagine that it’s someone bald and shouty, with big muscles.
Scientists have calculated that the levels of testosterone generated by a viewing of The Expendables will be so high that it could endanger the future of the human race, as all women will become men, and all men will become hulking brutes unable to communicate in anything other than grunts. In other words, the cast of The Expendables.
To dampen this potentially catastrophic effect, Stallone has also added a woman – WO…MAN! WO…MAN! – to the cast, in the delectable form of former Buffy/Angel star, Charisma Carpenter. Again, no word on who she’ll be playing, but it could be the role that Sly had set aside for his old muckerette, Sandra Bullock. Either way, it’ll be good to see Charisma get a big-screen role after years of goggle box action. And if she’s mucking in with the lads, firing off big guns, even better.
Honestly, the only way this film could get any better is if they cast Fred Willard and Matthew Lillard as Lonny Donny and Donny Lonny, two removals men who must transport a priceless gecko from San Diego Zoo to… oh, no, that’s Lizard In A Blizzard. Our mistake.
Gordon fucking Ramsay?!

I mean, I understand the reasoning - they think it'll draw in more people, and make more money.
But history has proven time and time again that R-rated films can make just as much money as anything PG-13.
It's a franchise that's known for having R-rated violence.

Bruce will play Mr Church, the man who hires the Expendables, a highly-trained team of deadly combat mercenaries, to go on a mission to South America to overthrow and execute a villainous dictator. Interestingly enough, the role of Church was originally offered to Schwarzenegger, who declined in favor of a smaller cameo part due to political concerns. Schwarzenegger will now play a retired Lieutenant General of the Expendables.

After a minute of Googling it, I found Sly talking about it to an Australian newspaper. Also, IMDb says this finished filming back in July, so nothing to really worry about.

Yep! Said it perfectly.
With a cast like that, and Stallone behind both the pen and camera (because I fully believe Stallone to be a great writer), I'm hoping he's seeing this as an opportunity to resurrect that bombastic sense of fun found in '80s action flicks.

I've now watched the trailer many, many times, and I'm now amused that Terry Crews is now mentioned along with the others due to his recent new found popularity as a result of the Old Spice commericals he's been doing for the past year or so. I admit its a hard one to pin down.
If something is 'stupid but God so awesome' it means that the movie is ridiculous and campy but that the action scenes were as good - if not better - than expected and therefore its what we were hoping for (and the camp added to it)
'so bad its laughable' means that the movie's bad points were so overwhelming that even the good parts couldnt save it, or that the 'good parts' werent as good as expected so the thing goes down in flames.
(EDIT: Reading that again, I have a hard time believing I actually typed it out. but oh well. To quote the Emperor in Amadeus, 'There it is.')

Yuen's signature style is very much street brawling, not fancy moves or wires. I found it interesting because Yuen has choreographed Statham in 3 Transporter movies, and since Statham's character here is a knife-fighter, it would've been just as appropriate. But no, he's specifically credited as Jet Li's choreographer only.

It seems to be that The Expendables' lack of originality or interesting characters is entirely forgivable considering that it's obviously a revival of a genre that saw its heyday during the 80's. Fine, no problem, I can dig that, but what took me by surprise is just how forced the camaraderie felt at times, how utterly average the attempts at humour were. Where were the great puns? Oneliners? Buda and Pest was probably the best of the bunch and that just says it all right there. Statham and Stallone had some decent chemistry together, as did Couture and Crews, but Jet Li was a goddamn waste. An uncharismatic, unfunny bore. Moreover, what was up with the Lundgren character? First he's sorta good, then he crosses over to the bad guys and then he comes back as if all the shit inbetween hadn't happened? At least Bennett, God bless him, went out in a blaze of villainous glory all the way till the very end. But other than that, it delivered about what I expected, there were some definite surges in adrenaline a few times, and even if this legendary action cast turned out to be less than, these blokes did wring some extra mileage out of the cookie cutter plot and villains. If only Van Damme, Seagal and Norris had been part of the show. I've gotta say I greatly prefer the inspiration over this rather forgettable imitation. That is to say, Commando, Rambo 2/3, The Delta Force 1/2.

I really enjoyed this -- it's refreshingly solid and tactile, cobbled together from physical props and real locations rather than computer generated imagery. And while a lot of it is familiar, it's obviously a labor of love for both the filmmakers and the cast, and the good humor pervades to the audience. I particularly enjoyed the principal action scene: it's been a while since we've seen gunfights that gritty.

Just saw this. As far as incredible bloodbaths and an unreasonable amount of explosions, it never disappoints. "Flyin' and dyin?" "Let's do it" is one of my favorite scenes in recent memories.
But as far as anything else, specially the chemistry between this people, it's kind of uneven. Let's sum it up:
Stallone - Indestructible Leader Action Hero
Jason Statham - Sidekick with Personal Story
Jet Li - Comic Relief with Height Issues
Dolph Lundgren - Character Arc! Resurrection Bonus +2!
Eric Roberts - Villain
Randy Coutoure - Zero Character, Vague Reference to Insanity
Steve Austin - Henchman
Terry Crews - Zero Character, Vague Reference to Marrying Weapons
Mickey Rourke - Former Expendable, Vague Reference to Stuff
Bruce Willis and Arnold - Cameos, Vague Acting
I had a great time, seriously. But as a movie, I wish Stallone had really gone for something else other than broke. But he didn't and it's ok. That was the worst Movie Spanish I've ever heard, though. Sentences didn't even make sense.

They should really come up with better missions for these kinds of movies. There's talk and talk about how insanely difficult it is to do what these dudes are about to do, and although lotso stuff was vaporized, I still had the distinct feeling these guys were pantsies, their mission a cakewalk, compared to Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in the 1968 classic War flick Where Eagles Dare. Gotta admit, I enjoyed the hell out of this.
It's a perfect throwback to low budget actioners of Reagan America, right down to the crappy Tropico inspired island.
Watching this felt like watching Commando, Cobra, Tango & Cash, and Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man, simultaneously, on four different screens. It's the kind of movie that easily could have been made, shot for shot, 25 years ago and starred Stallone, Arnold, Willis, or Van Damme. This is the kind of movie you turn on after coming home drunk at 3am and watch an hour of even though you've seen the entire thing a dozen times and pieces of it twice more than that.
I thought the camaraderie worked pretty well, and a couple of times it was obvious the actors were having a good time with it and enjoyed playing off one another (especially Stallone and Statham).
Cast or cameos I'd like to see for a sequel: Kurt Russell, Nic Cage, Jean Reno, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat.

For all the pre-release hype about this being the movie that will spontaneously make you grow a third nut, I gotta say I found it surprisingly pussified compared to its best ancestors. The humour was quite bad, the Jet Li character ridiculously non-badass and the Lundgren switcheroo from good to bad to good again unacceptable. Even knowing what kind of movie this is, and that we shouldn't expect a great story or great characters, it was a bit of a letdown. Boring? Well, I really like action movies so to me it wasn't, but it just shoulda been better.

Yeah, what's kinda amazing is that it somehow never rises to the "quality" of its forefathers. Presumably, Stallone isn't directing part II. I think that's a good choice. So bring in John McTiernan or Renny Harlin.

I watched the Making of on the SE and know what: Sly really impressed me!

In terms of dedication - which I can see! - or in terms of directing prowess? I thought the movie was often workmanlike and loud. Sure, it's old skool shoot'em-up action, but again I'd like to see some more visual creativity for the sequel. No Renny Harlin isn't a great director, but I do believe he's a better action director than Stallone.

I did like him back in the 90s. In fact, I miss the day when we have "action directors" like Harlin, McTiernan or Hopkins (the guy who directs Predator 2).

Renny Harlin is not a better director than Stallone. He's not a better director than anybody. Including Uncle Hank, the bipolar one-eyed homeless man who lives in the recycling bin outside my apartment and has not seen a movie in 20 years.

Harlin is a fine director of slick Hollywood trash, better than many of his contemporaries in terms of coherent choreography, propulsive storytelling, dopey enthusiasm, and formal craft, all of this somewhat relative mind you. His Deep Blue Sea and Mindhunters are kinda-guilty pleasures, both infectiously retarded high-gimmick/low-pretention B-movies, though I didn't care for the highly regarded Cliffhanger at all. The Long Kiss Goodnight, Die Hard 2, and Elm Street 4 are on my to-see radar.

From Harlin I enjoy/like Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. He's a really cheesy director, sure, but he's made some entertaining movies-I'd call him the poor man's Tony Scott, really-and he at least knows what an effective and well made action sequence is.
The Expendables was enjoyable, but I did feel a bit let down by the proceedings. I loved all of the fights, and the cast appeared to be having a lot of fun making the movie, but it was just missing a couple of items that would have made it a lot better. Also I couldn't shake off the fact that Sly was just using this film as a dry test run to not only show he could still direct a solid action movie, but as a reason to jump start a new series. I imagine the second one will hopefully be much better, and feature Chuck Norris.

I rewatched this a little while ago and liked the first half quite a lot. However, it was a vast drop in quality after the set-up. I hate it when that happens.

I will admit that despite my love of Cliffhanger, the opening sequence is the best part. Reminds me of when TBS featured both Point Break and Cliffhanger back to back one time-they really make a sweet double bill. 90s action movies to me are rather unique, even if the genre's heyday was really the 1980s.

I find nothing cheesy about Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2 Madman. They're both balls-to-the-walls, slam-bang, rootin'-tootin', kickass, pulse-pounding, shock-till-you-drop, action movies. :)
And if Chuck Norris joins The Expendables, the title will have to be changed to The Incredibles.

Or The Expendables and One Bigoted Asshole.

Ouch.
Morris, I liked how dedicated Sly was. He obviously loves what he's doing, rare habit nowadays.

I never said there was anything wrong with them being cheesy, simply because they are good movies. At least you and I think so, anyways. And I'd be greatly amused if the villain in the sequel turned out to be someone like Wesely Snipes.

This is kind of how I felt. And
Can someone please explain to me why they let Dolf live?
