Trailer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/duplicity/large.html)

I'd be much more interested without Julia Roberts, who can't play sexy to save her life. I'm not at all interested as is.

This film's getting some pretty great reviews (including a stratospheric 78 rating from D'Angelo) so I might make an effort to catch a matinee tomorrow, thus also testing the waters for you guys. That said, the trailer and plot just scream AVOID to me. Featherweight espionage shenanigans + smarmy, smug, sub-Mamet dialogue + Julia Roberts as a seductress = :| :| :|

I like the pedigree of Gilroy penning the script and behind the lens. But yeah, didn't really anticipate seeing this one, though I know my wife is dying to, so maybe I'll make the journey after all.

I liked Michael Clayton a bunch, especially on a repeat viewing, so yeah Gilroy's a draw too I guess.

I thought it was pretty awesome. It's not the romantic comedy the trailer makes it out to be.

Then perhaps I will check it out.

I don't like Julia Roberts, but I do like Clive Owen. I may still check it out, but I might want for it to hit the cheap/second ran theater or DVD.

This film is written and directed by Tony Gilroy. Elswit's shooting for him again. I like Julia Roberts well enough.

I'm all the fuck over this.

My friend that works at the theater asked me if I wanted to go see this with him next week. The buzz has me interested enough, especially since it's free.

Aw, don't be so hard on yourself, buddy. I was just joshin' ya.

People change. People grow. You've adapted to changes in your environment and yourself. It's cool, man. It's cool.

I still don't like Julia Roberts. If that means anything.

It means something. But only you can determine whether that something is worth anything.

Meh-chael Clayton didn't do it for me, and the trailer makes this look impossibly stupid. The preview being in front of every single film I saw in theaters over the past four months probably didn't help. Not expecting anything from this, but the buzz has it on my radar now.

Julia Roberts is one of those actors that I will actively not see a movie if she is in it. I think Tom Cruise is the only other actor like that for me, although not nearly to the level of Julia Roberts and some of Cruise's 80s and 90s output is good.

It's decent.

The opening credits are the best part of the movie. Or hell, any scene with Paul Giamatti.

Unbearable. An empty, chemistry-free, suspense-free, romance-free bit of air. The opening credits are hilarious though, the flashbacks extremely aggravating. I didn't expect to hate this quite so vehemently although I'm willing to entertain the notion that if I understood the plot and intrigue, it might make me like it a bit more. A bit.

Saw it last night. Eh.

Yeah, the opening credits are funny. Otherwise, the only exciting bit in the whole film is the first flashback. I knew nothing about the film going in, and found that bit to be a nice narrative surprise. The problem, of course, is once you get that charge, every other flasback is perfunctory, and redundant insofar as the narrative information they convery has already been conveyed or extrapolated from the first one.

I was "eh" on Clayton, too. Both films have some good moments, but nothing I can get enthusiastic about in the end. I probably enjoyed Clayton more.

Clive Owen picked two very boring movies to be in this year.

This movie wants to be like an Ocean's Eleven but doesn't have the cleverness to do it. Paul Giamatti is the highlight, but not in it nearly enough.

Boo.

Oh yeah, I saw this recently. It sucked. The plot "twists" are just dumb and neither Owen nor Roberts are very charming and Gilroy, as E said, is no Soderbergh for shifting time/plot-lines. The finale is pretty decent in being a little different than expected, but it was dull, dull, dull overall.

Agree Raiders and E. Part of me thinks it was the anti-Bond espionage movie and thus worthy of some praise, but another part of me was incredibly bored by what was on-screen.

Another part thinks I need to see this again to grasp some of the twists and turns, but I don't think I'll be able to muster up the enthusiasm.

Same here. Incredibly aggravating. There wasn't any chemistry between the leads was there? There was banter, chit-chat, but were there sparks? Methinks not.

Kudos for that opening though. Hilarious!
