We had this at the old site and I always thought it was fun.
So nothing like bringing old threads back to life when you're bored at 7:00am on a weekday!
It goes like this - one poster gives a topic, which the next poster answers with their list of "top 5", then posts the next topic.
I'll provide an example, then give the topic to get the ball rolling.
Top Five Trilogies
1.) The Man With No Name
2.) Star Wars OT
3.) Bourne
4.) Indiana Jones
5.) Miyamoto samurai trilogy

Nice pick with Flick (Umberto D). Even as a kid, I can't think of an animal I was more emotionally attached to then that one. And that final scene...

Top5 gumshoes (private detectives)
Nice one! I like it because there are so many totally wacko variations on the gumshoe characters.
Here are some of my favorites. Not all strictly private detectives, but they fill the shoes (no pun intended) well enough.
1.) Sam Spade (gotta go with the original, he's still the best)
2.) Deckard (Blade Runner)
3.) Eddie Valiant (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?)
4.) The Dude (The Big Lebowski)
5.) Philip Marlowe (Altman's version, from The Long Goodbye)
Here's a topic which I think could get radically different answers from male and females...

Yet, but I love the fact that he included the Dude. He did solve the case after all.
My list would probably be:
1. Jake Gittes
2. Sam Spade
3. Deckard (good un' too)
4. Guy from Angel Heart
5. El Duderino
I dunno about the unromantic kisses. I'm having a hard time thinking about it, so I'm leaving it for someone else right now.

Well I would at least argue that the relationship is not seen as "normal" by other characters in the film.

And Denzel is very homophobic.
So yeah, gonna have to call you on that one :P

Meg, I think you're taking a very superficial view and you need to be looking a bit deeper. The fact that a segment of society was portrayed as homophobic had no bearing on how Demme portrayed the relationship of Hanks and Banderas in Philadelphia. Would you not agree that it is precisely because their relationship was shown on-screen as one very much “in the norm” (they love, they fight, they grieve, they care deeply for one another…hey, they’re just like regular folks!) that Denzel’s character moves beyond his homophobia towards a gradual understanding and acceptance? And, seeing as how Denzel’s character was the one character with whom most of the straight members of the audience related to, well, it’s no wonder that Philadelphia is rightly regarded as one of the main reasons that Hollywood and, by extension, a significant segment of society, have been able to move past the gay stereotypes on display in The Celluloid Closet. Does homophopia still exist? Sure it does. But the portrayal of the gay couple in Philadelphia has probably done more to show mainstream audiences that gays are very much part of the norm than just about any other film in history. I should have put it at number 1 on my list.
