The latter deserves a revisit since that impression was based on an experience four years ago, before I had a solid read on his themes and style. He's one of the biggest neglected filmmakers I have. This thread will guide my future exploration, though.

I omitted most of his neorealist stuff, but yes, I have seen this film. It is good, albeit stark and confrontational.

He's divisive, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of Antonioni fans on Match-Cut.Of the 7 films of his I've seen, 6 have been watched in the past 3 months. I always thought of him as being the "difficult" Italian filmmaker. Difficult in that it was more of a chore to watch, than say Fellini or the neo-realists. Since my mini-Antonioni binge I have come to appreciate him, and really look forward to delving deeper into his works.

It's been too long since I've last since L'Avventura. Plus, I hate reducing a film to a numerical score.
I'd like to give it a re-watch, though. Perhaps pay closer attention to his often praised use of the telephoto lens. I don't think I truly caught the significance of that the first go-around. Although, thinking on it now, I assume it would serve to underscore the egocentricity (as well as the alienation) of certain characters.

You're not reducing the film. You're reducing your opinion of the film.

Well, Antonioni did not use the telephoto lens with L'Avventura. It was actually shot with a wide-angle lens - along with L'Eclisse and La Notte. Il Deserto rosso is the first film he shot using a telephoto lens, and used similar to the effects that you were describing. The use of the wide-angle lens in the trilogy should not be diminished, however. The emphasis was on mammoth architecture and an engulfing environment, achieving a similar type of alienation effect that he would capture later with the telephoto lens (for which Hsiao-Hsien Hou is now the master) but in a different way. He was one of the first to introduce the telephoto lens and its possibilities to mainstream filmmaking.

I would say it is a return to form. As for a while, he had been venturing out doing side projects and experimental type things (documentary work and his foray into video for example). In other words, he returns to his central themes of his pre-Blowup era - and in some places, pre-L'Avventura, but perhaps what is most significant about the film is the erotic sensibility would permeate his late career (a la Eros and Beyond the Clouds, perhaps picking up where Zabriskie Point left off). Although, some would argue his earlier work was far more erotic in a sensual way, and that his later work is simply more sexualized. It also contains some self-reflexive and self-conscious ruminations on art that we have seen throughout his career.

He makes the audience work - by his own admission - but I think to far a greater reward; at least, as far as I am concerned.

Interesting. Yeah, I definitely gotta' give L'Avventura another look. And now that you mention it, I also need to look into more of Hsiao-Hsien Hou's work, too. The only film of his I've seen is The Puppetmaster.

He's great - I would recommend Three Times, Millennium Mambo, and The Flight of the Red Balloon. I am rather fond of his later work. For earlier work, A City of Sadness is the most important.
