This thread will pit all of your very favorite TV theme songs against each other in a totally pointless, but hopefully entertaining battle royale! Moody instrumentals will take on catchy pop jingles! Will you choose your current favorite? Or will nostalgia win the day as you vote with your inner 12-year old?

After a nomination process, the top themes will be placed in a tournament style bracket and face off against each other one-on-one. And then ... votes will be cast, tears will be shed, profanity will be uttered ...

How to nominate a TV theme:
For these battles, I would like all voters to have the opportunity to quickly listen to both themes before casting their vote. Therefore, if you are the first person to nominate a particular theme, it must be accompanied by some sort of link where we can hear it. All subsequent nominations for a theme that has already been linked can simply occur by listing the title. Again, you only need to provide a link for a first nomination. However, if you think you have a better link for a nominated song, by all means, include it.

The primary focus in your decision making should be the music. However, voters are also encouraged to consider the effectiveness of the theme within the context of the show's opening titles (or however else the theme was used). That said, you should not simply vote for the best overall show, even if it is impossible to eliminate that factor entirely. I will ask voters to keep an open mind to new themes they have not previously heard (suggested by others) for shows they have never watched. We are looking for the best theme, not the theme from the most popular show.

Ideally, you will provide a video link (via Youtube, etc.) in which we can listen to the theme and see how it was used in context. If you cannot find a video link, audio links will be acceptable. However, if you cannot find any such link, the song will NOT be eligible.

All other issues will be resolved by me as we go.

To start with, I will only allow 15 nominations from each person, so choose wisely. Ranking will be determined by number of nominations, so yes, it does matter if you mention a theme that has already been mentioned. Go ahead whenever you're ready.

We currently have 102 themes mentioned. What I think I'm going to do is include all nominees mentioned thus far and ask for 26 more to bring us up to 128 total.

So ... the next 26 themes listed will be included. If you have not used all 15 yet, you may list more. If you have not submitted any nominees, you may submit a full ballot. But be warned, I will cut things off at 128.

A few final notes before I post the first battles:

* There is a total of 160 themes that will duke it out.

* Themes with more nominations have been given favorable early match-ups.

* If a theme only received one nomination, then it is possible that it will have to win a "play-in" match to reach the main part of the bracket (the final 128). This affects 64 themes. The 32 that win these "play-in" matches will take the final spots in the main bracket.

* You may notice that I have added a few themes into the mix to make the numbers work out a bit easier.

* Battles will occur in individual threads. We will be moving fairly quickly so each thread will be open a minimum of 24 hours. After that, I may close the voting at any time. Once the battle is over, I will merge the threads into this main thread so that the TV forum does not become overwhelmed.

First battles coming shortly.

Please take the time to listen to both themes and then cast your vote by making a post in this thread. Thread will be open a minimum of 24 hours and then may close any time after that at my discretion.

The primary focus in your decision making should be the music. However, voters are also encouraged to consider the effectiveness of the theme within the context of the show's opening titles (or however else the theme is used). That said, you should not simply vote for the best overall show, even if it is impossible to eliminate that factor entirely. Voters should keep an open mind to new themes they have not previously heard for shows they have never watched. We are looking for the best theme, not the theme from the most popular show.

The Adventures of Pete & Pete (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcqSfAHvuAo)

The Adventures of Pete & Pete was an American television series produced by Wellsville Pictures and broadcast by Nickelodeon. The show featured humorous and surreal elements in its narrative, and many recurring themes centered on two brothers both named Pete Wrigley, and their various interactions with family, friends, and enemies.

The show was created by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi and began as minute-long shorts in 1989 that aired in between regular programs. Owing to the popularity of the shorts, five half-hour specials were made, followed by a regular half-hour series that ran for three seasons (1993-1996) and continued in reruns until around 1999. The N aired reruns of the show between 2002-2003. Since 2005, reruns of the series have occasionally aired on Hallmark Channel along with other classic Nickelodeon series. The first two seasons were released on DVD in 2005 and the third was planned for 2006 but was indefinitely postponed.

The cast comprised mainly non-professional actors, which added to the show's sense of realism.

The first of several Hanna-Barbera action-based adventure shows, which would later include Space Ghost, The Herculoids, and Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, Jonny Quest ran on ABC in prime time for one season in 1964–1965. Police Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLax5kn8tF4) (theme begins about 32 seconds into clip)

Police Woman was an American television police drama starring Angie Dickinson that ran from September 13, 1974 to March 29, 1978 on NBC. It is not only considered to be the first successful series to focus on a female police officer, but also the first successful primetime drama series to feature a woman in the title role.

The show revolved around Sgt. Leanne "Pepper" Anderson (Angie Dickinson), an undercover agent working for the Criminal Conspiracy Unit of the LAPD. Sergeant William "Bill" Crowley (Earl Holliman) was her immediate superior, and Pete Royster (Charles Dierkop) and Joe Styles (Ed Bernard) were the other half of the undercover team that investigated everything from murders to rape and drug crimes. In many episodes, Pepper went undercover (as a prostitute, teacher, nurse, dancer, waitress, etc.) in order to get close enough to the suspects to gain valuable information that will lead to their arrest.

The Brady Bunch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pM-0Pwgr7-E&feature=related)

The Brady Bunch is an American television situation comedy based around a large blended family. The show originally aired from September 26, 1969 to March 8, 1974 on the ABC network and was subsequently syndicated around the world. In 1965, following the success of his TV series Gilligan's Island, Sherwood Schwartz conceived the idea for The Brady Bunch after reading an article in the Los Angeles Times that said "40% of marriages [in the United States] had a child or children from [a] previous marriage." He instantly set to work on a pilot script, called Yours and Mine, and passed it around the "big three" television networks of the era. ABC, CBS and NBC all loved the script, but each network wanted changes to it before they would commit to filming it. Schwartz felt that his script was perfect, and although he had the interest of all three networks in America, he decided to shelve it.

Super Chicken, really?

That thing is terrible. Not only is the music mediocre, but it also lacks the iconic power of the Brady Bunch theme. Also, the animation is terrible. I've seen Flash cartoons with more FPS.

The Brady Bunch all the way. It is such an iconic theme. It may not be a great song (how many TV themes are?), but it represents so much about TV and the sitcom in general. It's like Leave it to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, and My Three Sons.

I am appalled at you all for voting for Super Chicken - feels like anti-populist BS to me.

Calling it "animated" is a stretch. I've drawn flip-books with more tweens.

While the writing for Jay Ward's shows was often spectacular, and incredibly smart, the actual animation and drawings were crude beyond belief, and, IMO, defiled the art of animation.

Never cared for it.

I even remember being a very young kid and complaining to my mom about how terrible the drawings and animation were in the shows like Rocky and Bullwinkle. I couldn't stand to watch them even then - they always seemed so lazy and uninspired.

One of my earliest memories is telling my mom that I didn't want to watch those cartoons, I wanted to watch the ones with the big eyes and the small mouths, the ones about soccer and robots, that were on the Mexican station. Little did I know that even by the age of 4 or 5 I had already gravitated towards Japanese animation.

Like I said, the writing was often spectacular, and incredibly smart. However, when it comes to cartoons, I like more out of the actual animation. Writing can only take an animated thing so far in my book. I demand quality animation and drawings out of my cartoons, and the Jay Ward stuff simply doesn't cut it in this department.

Excel Saga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K50l-9RNBo8)

Excel Saga is a comedy manga series by Koushi Rikudou, and a TV anime series directed by Shinichi Watanabe. Both the anime and the manga are absurdist comedies following the attempts of Across, a "secret ideological organization," to conquer the city of Fukuoka as a first step towards world domination. Excel, the title character, is a key member of Across and ranks below only the organization's enigmatic leader, Ilpalazzo. In both the manga and anime, the city is defended by a shadowy government agency led by Dr. Kabapu, whose subordinates engage Excel and her junior officer, Hyatt, on several occasions.

NBA on NBC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UooitEU6AtE)

The NBA on NBC was a weekly presentation of National Basketball Association games on the National Broadcasting Company television network from 1955 to 1962, and again from 1990 to 2002. The NBA on NBC succeeded the NBA on CBS. During NBC's partnership with the NBA, the league rose to unprecedented popularity for the sport, with ratings surpassing the days of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in the mid-eighties. NBC's theme music, "Roundball Rock" was composed by New Ager John Tesh. The song, which NBC used for every telecast in the network's twelve-year history with the NBA, is today often used by NBA TV for their live game coverage.

The Big O (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdA6iRk94Hc)

The Big O is a Japanese animated television series created by director Kazuyoshi Katayama and designer Keiichi Sato for Sunrise Studios. The writing staff was assembled by the series' head writer, Chiaki J. Konaka. The story takes place forty years after a mysterious occurrence causes the residents of Paradigm City to lose their memories. The series follows Roger Smith, Paradigm City's top Negotiator. He provides this much needed service with the help of an android named R. Dorothy Wayneright and his butler Norman Burg. When the need arises, Roger calls upon Big O, a giant relic from the city's history that may hold the key to its future. The television series is designed as a tribute to Japanese and Western shows from the 1960s and 1970s. The series is done in the style of film noir and combines the feel of a detective show with the mecha genre of anime. The setpieces are reminiscent of Toho monster movies and the score is an eclectic mix of styles and musical homages.

The Real Ghostbusters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4d8Fc22HYI&feature=related)

The Real Ghostbusters is an Emmy-Nominated American animated television series based on the hit 1984 film Ghostbusters. The series ran from 1986 to 1991, and was produced by Columbia Pictures Television (now Sony Pictures Television), DiC Entertainment and Coca-Cola. "The Real" was added to the title over a dispute with Filmation and its Ghost Busters properties. The series continues the adventures of paranormal investigators Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, Dr. Ray Stantz, their secretary Janine Melnitz and their mascot ghost Slimer. There also were two ongoing Real Ghostbusters comics, one published monthly by Now Comics in USA and the other published weekly (originally fortnightly) by Marvel Comics in the United Kingdom, and a popular toy line manufactured by Kenner.

It was syndicated to television stations across Canada and the United States and occasionally still appears today in some TV markets. In Canada, the series is currently airing on Space, TV Land Canada, Drive-In Classics and MTV2. A quirky sketch comedy series, the show's cast included Billy Van, Fishka Rais, Guy Big, Mitch Markowitz, Vincent Price and Julius Sumner Miller.
