Yes, studios should nab distribution rights and then announce a remake at the same time, that way they can prevent the original to be released until the remake hits DVD.

I wouldn't know about the US, but in Argentina, the Ringu remake was released several months before the original.

I don't think it's necessary, at all, but Reeves ain't bad.
