Hi all. I'm looking for some good sci-fi movie recommendations. I'm not looking for sci-fi action, Star Warsy type shit; rather, I'm looking for moody sci-fi, rife with a sense of wonder and foreboding, movies that suggest that outer (and in some cases inner) space can a very mysterious, and at times dangerous place.
Movies I think of include:
* Forbidden Planet (the benchmark)
* The Incredible Journey
* The Black Hole
* Sunshine
* Bladerunner
* 2001: A Space Odyssey
Are there any other movies along these lines that I need to check out?

Fantastic Planet was as dizzingly delirious as anything you've listed.
I can't vouch for the Korean film Natural City, but I know some people who rave about it.

I've tried to watch Natural City about 8 times, but I can't get past the 40 minute mark.
Not all strictly space SF, but good none the less:
Time Masters (Rene Laloux)
Ghost in the Shell Innocence
Patlabor the Movies 1-3
Angel's Egg
(Basically almost anything directed by Oshii)
A Scanner Darkly
Galaxy Express 999 (more space opera)
Pi
Mind Game (talk about inner space!)
Tekkonkinkreet
Solaris
I'm sure there are some others, but I just can't think right now.
Unfortunately, the more SF I read, the more I realize how very few really good SF movies there are. I mostly find that the good examples of SF are animated.

Oh, and I'm assuming you've seen Akira.

Also, if you can get past some of its flaws, Christmas on Mars contains a surprisingly thoughtful SF narrative, and deals with classic SF themes such as loneliness and isolation.

The Incredible Journey
Do you mean The Fantastic Voyage?
The Incredible Journey is the movie about the two dogs and cat that go on a trek in search of the family they think left them behind. A good movie in its own right, but not what I'd call sci-fi. :)
Of course, if there is a sci-fi movie called The Incredible Journey, then I've just proved myself to be a clueless noob and will go back into my hole. :P

You must have missed the part at the beginning when we see that the dogs and cat are actually martians.

Thanks!
I’m assuming you have the biggies covered, so here’s some lesser discussed, but still darn good, sci-fi:
The Quiet Earth
The Day of the Triffids
The Quatermass films (The Quatermass Xperiment, Quatermass 2, Quatermass and the Pit)
The original The War of the Worlds
I don’t know if Slaughterhouse-Five qualifies, but I’d recommend it nonetheless.
I’ll be sure and add more as I think of them.

This is not what you're looking for, but it's just about my favorite time travel movie ever.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
A sci-fi musical comedy that I think D Davis would really like: The American Astronaut.
Dead & Messed Up

I really got a kick out of The Day the Earth Caught Fire. It's a great nuke-scare sci-fi that finds a nice spin on the concept of mutually assured destruction.

For what it's worth, I recommend all three of these.
The Roeg/Bowie one because it's great, the two others because they're fun.

Alive in Joburg is a 6 minute short available on youtube. You might find it interesting - sort of like Cloverfield in style.

I found it to be alright, wasn't that impressed. It was much better before they get to the far future methinks.

I like the far future bits just fine, and there are some unexpected (and welcome) moments of poetry in this film. That flower at the end is a lovely touch.
It's easily the best George Pal flick that I've seen.
