My most anticipated film of 2004 finally has a trailer. It isn't much of a trailer, but it's something.

Benicio Del Toro has already won best actor at Cannes, apparently.

I'm also really looking forward to this. I don't like that it's going to be released as two movies, though. The Argentinian and Guerrilla.

I predict an awful lot of backlash when it's released in the US. You guys have some serious issues with the left.

Wow. He's a rather patient and gracious man.

This is the most unwise thing you've ever said. And you've professed irritation with The Beatles.

It's a personal opinion. When has he let me down? Out of Sight, Solaris, the first two Ocean films (I haven't seen the third), The Limey, Traffic, Sex, Lies and Videotape... all great films as far as I'm concerned. The only two films of his that I've seen that have been a let down are Underneath and Erin Brockovich. One was early in his career and showed signs of the director to come, the other was... a misstep. Either way, he's earned my faith.

I suppose, I suppose.

Me, though, you'd have to pay me (good money) to watch a 4 hour Soderbergh.

For the record, I love the Ocean films, The Limey, and Solaris.

I found it joyless and lumbering, if managing to eke a little charm from its admittedly impressive cast.

Really? A half-hearted criticism of a film that I'm more or less neutral about is the most unwise post I've ever made? Remember Gigli? Norbit? Crash? Ghosts of Mars? Philip Seymour Hoffman?

By the way, I neglected to say, but I also liked Kafka as well as Full Frontal. Still, his offenses are more offensive: Bubble (one of the worst movies I've seen) and Traffic (a strong contender for most overrated film ever).

Bubble is right up there with the worst movies. Except I always forget about it when I think of the worst movies made.

Yeah, I guess I forgot who I'm talking to. Still, it's pretty unwise. Lumbering? Joyless? I feel like I'm talking to my 7 year old son when he tells me it's opposite day.

And in other news, Ocean's 14 is not going to happen (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/081216k.php).

Also, I didn't really mind Bubble. It was disturbing, unsettling... but I still think it had some really naturalistic performances. And the tone, while particularly somber and morose, was well executed.

But, admittedly, I don't really want to watch it again.

One theater in my city is playing the full four-hour version of this film twice a day for a week only. I'm debating with myself whether it's worth it. I don't think I've ever sat through a film that long in the theater.

Same here. I am pretty sure they are following up with the two separate films after this run, so I'm debating to try and make it to this or wait.

i have no desire at all to see this. soderbergh in my book is already an overrated director, and now he takes, as his subject, the most overrated homo sapiens ever walked this planet.

The length isn't the issue. I wasn't really available this weekend, especially not for a 45 minute drive and then a 4 hour plus film. It's a one-week only engagement.

If they follow up with the two separate films, I will likely see both in the same trip.

Well, it was okay. But I was reminded of a lot of movies that were so much better.

And like The Wrestler, it seemed largely devoid of style. I like Soderbergh when he's stylish. Did he feel the material was too "important" for style?

For those who've seen it, is the film David Leanish? We're in need of some quality character epics.

I don't generally brag by saying things like "This one Sunday, I literally spent 14 hours in my underwear playing Harvest Moon."

But the only difference I see between the statements are two hours.

And to answer your question, SirNewt, the film didn't remind me of David Lean at all.

Damnit, film makers. Gimme some character epics that aren't as dopey as 'Glory' or 'The Mission'.

Too bad this (the four hour version) is only playing here tonight, tomorrow, and Thursday. I could spend four hours + commute time on a weekend but definitely when I have classes and this much work to do.

Guess I'll have to wait.

Yeah, I see this as a way to save money too. $14 for my girlfriend and I to see both films is better than $28+ to see it in the theater. Plus whether this film even reaches my city's one art house is in question.

Che will never come anywhere near me. So it's either rent it OnDemand or with Netflix when it's released on DVD. With those as my only options, I think OnDemand is a great alternative because I don't have to wait 6-8 months.

Considering the time, I'll have to delay further thoughts. But, for all its faults, that was a much more intriguing take on the story than I had expected.

You guys, Raiders was right all along! I really enjoyed these movies, although I think it was a good idea to take a break in between them. Loved Benicio's low-key performance and the way it conveys the experience of guerrilla combat. It's a compliment to say that Guevara seems largely ordinary throughout the journey, despite the effort of those around him to elevate him to the status of legend or supervillain. The violence is handled responsibly and not given a glamorous sheen. It took me a long time to get to these, but I'm glad I did.
