I really want to see The Hunger, and I'd also like to view Crimson Tide and Beat the Devil as well. The rest though I can do without. Also I think that True Romance is mostly good because of QT's script, and the cast assembled. Part of my rating is due to that awesome scene with Hopper and Walken though.

I may be the only person who kinda enjoys Days of Thunder and likes it more than Top Gun. I can only attribute it to Robert Towne's scripting, all of the character actors filling in the cast, and how the races are more visually dynamic than the confusing abstraction of the flying sequences in Top Gun. The soundtrack of wailing, anthemic, 80's Bruckheimer-ian guitar solors is more catchy as well... *embarrassed*

The amount of ire thrown by Match Cut at the Scott brothers is the quirk about this place that I have the most trouble with.
Especially Ridley Scott - I think he has made some damn awesome movies. He's one of the directors who, in real life, all of my closest friends love, but according to the internets, he is a despicable hack of a director.
It's crazy I tell ya!

Anyone that's directed Alien and Blade Runner deserves some respect.
I think he's a great director that tends to get a lot of mediocre scripts. G.I. Jane? Kingdom of Heaven? Yuck as scripts, but there is some amazing technical craft in both.

I agree.
Visual panache is the main reason why I watch films, and the Scott brother deliver this in abundance.
I just dig their style.

His scripts are what carry his good films. His craft, as a whole, is utterly commercial, without wit or originality. Kingdom of Heaven is as crafty as a really expensive deodorant commercial and GI Jane is a glorified advertisement for the Marines. Tony is far more twisted in his craft.

I misspoke, but I do not think the direction of Alien outdoes the script. The Duellists as well, I think he's in top visual form and the script is equally impressive. But in his passable films, Blade Runner (**1/2), Hannibal (****), and Matchstick Men (***), it's all in the script. The rest of his films are frequently ruined by his hackery.

I think the script (or I guess the dialog, really) for Hannibal is awful, and yet it is one of my favorite Scott films, all because of how much atmosphere he creates through his shot selection and direction. I love the way the film looks; it is a masterpiece of the macabre.
There are very few films that I do not dare anymore to attempt an explanation as to why I like them. Hannibal is one of them. I keep watching it, thinking "This is the time that I'm going to see it for the crappy movie that it is." And each time, I love it more and more.
D_Davis

Hannibal is absurd, violent, scary, atmospheric, weird and beautiful in its grotesqueness. In many ways, it is exactly how I would want an adaptation of an HP Lovecraft story to turn out.
Rowland
11-11-2008, 07:57 PM
I didn't find Hannibal all that grotesque. Mostly just dull and insipid, really. I'd take Silence of the Lambs any day... which reminds me that I still need to catch up with Manhunter.

Speaking of Ridley, I kinda dug how he turned down the slickness for American Gangster, which looks the least like a shiny car commercial of any film he's made in decades. The single full-out action sequence in that movie, being the raid on the drug lab in the third act, was executed with exhilarating kinetic flair as well, which he also brought to Black Hawk Down, that probably being his most exciting action movie from a directorial standpoint, and also possibly his most problematic for the very same reason.

11-11-2008, 08:08 PM
Gladiator is a silly, silly script that works for me because of the look of the movie. There's a certain beauty at the beginning of the movie as that war scene approaches, whether it's the arrows in the sky, the barbarians evolving from the forest, or the sound selection as the troops rally.
Then the work in the gladiator stadiums, each fight being better than anything in its many remake attempts (Troy, Alexander).

Ah, crap, I forgot all about Black Hawk Down. Its battles are as chaotic and viscerating as the scenes in Saving Private Ryan.
