Too hit-or-miss for me to consider a fave, but he's definitely a reliable standby. You could say the same about Chabrol. I just go by the director's best work and try as hard as I can to surpress my memories of Le Décade prodigieuse (1971) and Melinda and Melinda. That said, I wouldn't consider him a favorite director either.

I count Chabrol among my favorites, but then again, I've only really seen his lionized films... innocent 'til proven guilty, I guess. Though I did think A Girl Cut in Two was pretty mediocre despite solid reviews. I haven't seen the one you mentioned, but he made the fantastic Juste Avant la Nuit in the same year, so that counts for something (as well as Le Boucher the previous year).

I'll try and rank the ones I've seen instead:

1. Annie Hall
2. Crimes and Misdemeanors
3. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
4. The Purple Rose of Cairo
5. Another Woman
6. Alice
7. Shadows and Fog
8. September

To be fair and honest, this ranking is without re-watches and proper contemplations for some of the titles. I feel confident about the top 5 but the rest would require more careful consideration, as they are based on the recollection of my (now long past) first impressions alone. Also, I've seen Manhattan but cannot recall enough about it (in any significant sense) to warrant a ranking.

So Stardust Memories is just meh. Reading up on it, Woody Allen claims that the movie isn't autobiographical at all, but that's just silly, seeing as his first dramas had just come out.

There are some nice touches, but why so hateful towards the fans?

There are some nice touches, but why so hateful towards the fans?

This is clear in the movie, regarding Sandy's career. I don't know why you'd then want to assume it's Woody confronting you personally, and then hold it against the film itself.

SM is a wonderfully crafted film.

More shadows means higher contrast means borderline blind people can see the image better and seeing the image better means greater appreciation for said image which means indication of quality.

That doesn't make sense to you? It didn't quite resonate with me as much as I'd have liked. I was a bit more detached than I should've been in order for me to push it into the 9-range.

You're misunderstanding me, though I suppose that's mostly my fault. I don't mean that it failed to live up to some silly expectation, only that it didn't quite hit me like a 9-range film should, if that makes any more sense. Basically, I thought it was great, but not excellent. Good?

How is it his "fault" that a film didn't resonate with him? Is everyone who doesn't have the same reaction to a film as you somehow at fault?

No, he just says the movie isn't as good as it could've been because he doesn't feel like it resonated with him, i.e. he didn't like it as much as he thought we would. Seems to me he is mixing the objective and the subjective. May as well just stick with one or the other, look at something on a critical level or don't.

Edit: I didn't even like Manhattan very much, so no, they are not at fault, but how good of you to point that out.

It has been a while since I have seen it; I could use a rewatch, but I have hardly seen any Woody Allen movies, so it is not particularly one of my top priorities right now. I would like to see Broadway Danny Rose.

Looking at something on a critical level tends to be just as subjective as looking at something on not a critical level, though. Not that I disagree with you re: Brightside's post.
