I've seen nothing from him. He's got a few on the "Watch Now" feature. But in MadMan tradition, I'll probably not get to them.

Doesn't Bava look a little like Salvador Dali?

Edited original post to include Five Dolls for an August Moon. It sucked. Apparently Bava did it for the money.

Was Bava a required director for your junior high film class?

No, one I have an obsession with. I'm glad the boxsets are more widely available.

Oh and I think I might have seen some of Hatchet for the Honeymoon, but I'm not sure if I did or not. It was some time ago though. I did watch Danger: Diabolik thanks to MSTK (it was their last episode), but that was a decade ago. I vaguely recall only a few moments.

I can see that others are kinda meh on Planet of the Vampires, but I have to say that it was pleasantly surprising. Obviously budgetary restrictions played a part in some of the negativity to be found (cheesy sets, poor acting), but Bava handles what he was given quite well. With limited sets he creates a claustrophobic feel. His great use of colors is obviously in full force, as well as a plot that is said to be an inspiration for Alien (certain aspects definitely can be seen as being evident in both films.) Also, bad choice for American titles. I was surprised to find nothing remotely close to vampires appear in the film.

Original post is updated yet again. :)

Added Bay of Blood. Movie = decent proto-slasher. Ending = one of the most hilariously insane things I've seen in a while.

Making my way through Bavas filmography. I noticed no one rated a favorite of mine of Bava's: Lisa and the Devil. A later masterpiece. The film plays on Bava's obsession with Dolls, their human doubles, and the horror of their interchangeability.

Huh since this consensus I've viewed Blood And Black Lace (near great/good), and I think its his best film (so far). I've also seen The Girl Who Knew Too Much (decent), Black Sunday (solid), and the first segment of Black Sabbath, which I loved a lot. My public library has Kill Baby....Kill (which I might revisit again), The Knives of the Avenger, and Black Sabbath. Netflix Instant Viewing has a small amount of the man's work currently available, I believe.
