OK, I have listened to them all and "One Year of Love" is the 'winner' for me this time around. Really enjoyed the warmth she gives to that song. Also really enjoyed "The Shining Path" and "Autobahn". Great covers that I had heard previously: "Hurt", "No More I Love Yous" and "My Way". "Llorando" is of course devastating, but I almost don't want to listen to it outside of the context of Lynch's film. I prefer to keep it as unfamiliar as possible. So sue me, I thought "Fantasy" was kind of fun, although "Hotel California" takes an annoying song and makes it even more obnoxious.
Some thoughts on this mix, but first a big http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/user/icons/icon14.gif to Saya for track placement - this mix flows well, not so easy when the offerings were as diverse as these…now, on to the show:
Intro – It’s Python, it’s fabulous…
Fantasy - Final Fantasy ** ½ Pretty decent, vocals are a little rough, but overall a fun track and a good beginning
I Put a Spell on You - Natacha Atlas *** I like Ms. Atlas and she does a good job on this – the mix of middle-eastern and hip-hop aesthetics is appealing to these ears..
The Shining Path - Sun City Girls **** Definitely a highlight; Boner, you came through. I guess this explains why Lambada was so huge (?)..
Where The Streets Have No Name - Pet Shop Boys ** ½ Good, heard it before. As I stated earlier, I like the diversity of this mix, including this club staple.
Hotel California - The Moog Cookbook ***** An unusual rating, since my scale only goes to 4 stars. There should be a law against this much awesomeness. Of course, it helps to be a moog fan (bac0n, I guess you’re all over Perrey & Kingsley, Mort Garson, et al.)
To Go Home - M. Ward ** ½ Liked it ok. Didn’t care for the lackluster production, tho.
One Year of Love - Stevie Ann *** ½ What Spinal said. There are several songs in this compilation that are similar to this sound and I like them all.
Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground - Chris Thile *** Hell yeah, give me more of this. Vocals are a bit iffy, but the overall vibe is perfect.
The Show Must Go On - Three Dog Night *** An oldie from the past; Way back when, I remember that it was almost ‘uncool’ to like Three Dog Night (precisely because of their success), but since I owned just about all of their albums, er…I approve of this inclusion.
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Shawn Colvin *** ½ Another in the high-quality acoustic vein, I really like this one a lot.
Toxic - Yael Naim *** ½ Sounds like Isabella Rosselini channeling Kate Bush – which can only lead to good things. Unusual and very interesting instrumentation also.
Hurt - Johnny Cash *** ½ This too, is really good, tho Cash sounds a bit off. I’m sure subsequent listenings will fix that.
Havana Affair - D-A-D ** This is just a case where the cover is not that much different than the original. Nice song, but it just sounds a lot like the Ramones.
No More I Love You's - Annie Lennox *** Well-deserved classic status.
My Way - The Sex Pistols **** Talk about well-deserved classic status! One of the greatest cover songs ever.
Autobahn - Señor Coconut – If you’ve heard the original 20+ minute tune by Kraftwerk, then you can appreciate the humor of the intro – the Kraftwerk song opens with the sounds of a Mercedes engine being started and then beautifully humming on all cylinders: the apex of German engineering! In Señor Coconut’s version, you hear the sounds of a second-hand jalopy being started in vain, and left on the side of the road like the broken-down piece of crap it is. Well, I thought it was funny.
Eleanor Rigby - Rare Earth ** Decent enough, I guess. Not my favorite of theirs (tho, it’s always good to see someone namecheck great bands like RE)
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Leon Russell ** ½ Always had a fondness for Russell’s material. Had never heard this before; I like.
The Boys of Summer - Bree Sharp * ½ Alright, three strikes: I never cared for the original, the sound on this is way too generic, and Ms. Sharp doesn’t have the greatest of pipes. Now, having said all that, I think this song fits in well with this collection. Would probably sound even better if I were out driving in my car on a Sunday afternoon instead of sitting in front of my computer typing this.
The World's Greatest - Bonnie "Prince" Billy *** I don’t know why I don’t own anything by BPB as I’ve really liked just about everything I’ve ever heard.
With God On Our Side - The Neville Brothers **** An odd bird, this. I mean, apart from Aaron Neville’s brilliant vocals, this one takes a while to get into, but then it really gets going and when it’s over, I’m lamenting the fact that it’s over. Truly, a beautiful song, and a superb lead into the next song…
Llorando (Crying) - Rebekah Del Rio **** In or out of context, this is amazing. Can you imagine if it hadn’t been included in Mulholland Dr, and we were all hearing it for the first time? Mixtape winner for sure.
Rebel Rebel - Seu Jorge *** ½ Like I stated earlier, I’m a sucker for Bossa Nova, and this is a perfect way to end this mix.
Many thanks, Saya, on an outstanding job.

I was never saying that it doesn't work outside of the context of the film. I was saying that, for me, I would prefer to save my experience of it for those few times that I watch the film because I would never want it to grow too familiar.

Track by track, step by step…
1. Fantasy – Final Fantasy
Initially sounds like Psycho Killer from the Stop Making Sense movie, what with the stripped-down beat. Pleasant build-up of varying musical elements. The lyrics have an interesting twist, being sung by a male voice and all. Nice violin backing. Stupid post-song dialogue at the end, though. All in all, pleasant.
•••••• – That's six planets out of nine.
2. I Put a Spell on You – Natacha Atlas
Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but isn't the whole point of "I Put A Spell On You" to allow a vocalist to roar out those words? Those powerful, simple words? If I want to listen to cheesy Greek-pop, I've got the Aegean Connection every saturday morning.
••••
3. The Shining Path – Sun City Girls
Grating voice, and what language is that? Nice energy, good pace, but all in all a bit too repetitive, or perhaps just not… enough. Enough of whatever. I don't know the original song, so I'm a bit in the dark in that regard.
•••••
4. Where The Streets Have No Name – Pet Shop Boys
Heh, typical Pet Shop Boys music. Fun, good background music, and certainly just applying this mode to a U2 song is interesting by itself. Gets better at 1:30 when he actually starts really covering the song. Definitely not Bono. Another cheesy track, but this is kind of like good cheese. Haut fromage.
•••••••
5. Hotel California – The Moog Cookbook
Man, I used to think this song was so cool in high school. When I got to college I started listening to more natural sounds, and less electronica and stuff like this.
Listening to it now, it just is a song that strikes me as humorous, above all. Many of the random, fiddly electro noises at the beginning remind me of videogaming as a kid. More to the point, to take such a pretentious song as Hotel California and turn it into such an absurd exercise in electronic music of various genres, going from honky-tonk to carnival, to funky-pop and god knows what else in rapid succession really just punches the air out of what we know as "Hotel California." It's not a song that really has anything profound to say about music, or life, but it is almost endlessly amusing.
•••••••
6. To Go Home – M. Ward
Mmmmm, nice backing piano there. Very contemporary sound, if a bit alt-rock generic. Is it a problem that I'm not really doing very well paying attention to the lyrics? Probably not. All in all, a pleasant new song to listen to.
••••••••
7. One Year Of Love – Stevie Ann
*sniff* *sniff* – I smell adult contemporary! Start off with a cliché backed by your archetypical backing acoustic, and you have a recipe for boomer-satiation. Boring.
•••
8. Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground – Chris Thile
Nice, solid bluegrass sound. I like this brand of stripped-down, raw country stuff. Pleasant. The singer has a good way of mixing things up.
•••••••
more tomorrow, probably

OK, but that's not what you criticized. You said it had all the trappings of adult contemporary and used that as a negative. I would argue that Colvin's is exactly the same.

Blech. Sorry trans.
Hey, no need to apologize. I'm not your father, I don't feel responsible for your poor taste in music.

"The Shining Path" is the best song ever.

OK, but that's not what you criticized. You said it had all the trappings of adult contemporary and used that as a negative. I would argue that Colvin's is exactly the same.
(I would also strongly disagree on "better intonation")
Sure, I was needling adult contemporary, which the Colvin track is certainly not guilt-free of, but I just think that This Must Be the Place is a fundamentally stronger song, writing-wise. In addition, I think the performance is more nuanced. Not to belabor this whole thing, I will agree that the Colvin track isn't perfect – it suffers from overproduction– but I think that to equate the two misses out on a lot of nuances.
Mainly I just hated the cliché opening lines of "One Year of Love." Alright, I'll stop now, best to just move on.
9. The Show Must Go On – Three Dog Night
More carnival riffing! The return of the cheese. I like the vocalist's style. Kind of like a strung-out muppet. Not familiar with whatever the original song is. Enjoyable, if only for its great, up-beat tempo. But no, the rest is ok, too.

10. This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) – Shawn Colvin
Mainly I'm thankful for this track just for allowing me to reflect on a song in a different light. I had never really considered the words of this Talking Heads track, but transferred into a folk/acoustic format, with the matching vocal style, the loveliness of the lyrics comes to the forefront. Ah, that's what you were aiming at, Byrne!
Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
Just with these two lines we learn so much: a person walking away from home, instinctually wishing to be held up, perhaps by the nape of the neck, clutched like some, to crib Holden C., great catcher in the rye. Or a giant cat, bring her foolish kitten back to safety. Great, non-cliché simplicity.

11. Toxic – Yael Naim
Starts off very Jon Brion-y. Definite proof that execution can often be everything. I mean, toxic wasn't a bad pop song, catchy in the short-term but ultimately forgettable, but this interpretation does take it to another level. I'd like to hear a bit more up-tempo version.
12. Hurt – Johnny Cash
A great one. This one, does it go to Pluto? Sure, why not. Love the heavy, deep piano sound. Nice Crescendo. Love the "my empire of dirt" phrase. I just kinda wish that other old singers could have opportunities like this in the twilight of their careers (Dave Van Ronk, namely).

The Boys of Summer - Would probably sound even better if I were out driving in my car on a Sunday afternoon instead of sitting in front of my computer typing this.
I don't think I've ever listened to this song outside of my car. Maybe that's why I love it. Plus, I love her voice. It's different. Raw.
Plus she's hawt, especially up close. I got to show her to a bathroom once, then I hugged her.

Yeah, I really like these mixtapes. It's such a great way to discover new artists and music.
I've been listening to the mix quite a bit, and have bumped up a couple of ratings, expecially With God on Our Side from *** to ****
Sublime.

I have to say, I'm greatly enjoying the Autobahn cover. Between that, Hotel California, and The Show Must Go On, this has definitely been the goofiest mix yet.

I love Lanois' production on this. It's so thick, atmospheric, and dense. The song has a real weight to it, even though it is also minimalistic in its instrumentation and composition. The album, Yellow Moon, has a number of killer tracks.

Well, I love the song Yellow Moon (which is also on The Mighty Quinn soundtrack), so I guess I'm going to have to look for that album.

But then you'd have to live life and stuff. Who needs that?
And what's happened to my rep power? I'm gonna feel guilty everytime I give out rep again - here's one point, don't spend it all at once.

At least it's an ethos.
These were some of the themes I was thinking about using before:
Music about Music
Hometown (music connected to your hometown / local bands / songs about the place you live)
Human anatomy
Will the Circle be Unbroken is an amazing song, totally powerful.

It's awesome, for sure.
The album as a whole is pretty good, but there are a few tracks I don't really care for.
Who wants to do the next one? :)

Reminds me that I need to find the time to listen to volume four, and maybe comment on the previous three. I liked them, but I'm not good at writing about music.
