I was thinking of going to Scotland for New Year with a bunch of mates. Regrettably, one needs convincing because when he thinks of world famous cities, Paris and London automatically pop up in his mind. With good reason of course, but I've a feeling that Scotland could be truly fabulous. I certainly am fairly sold on this particular destination. We were In Berlin last New Year and that was legendary.:)

Has anyone been to Scotland? Espesh with New Year.

Is there anything in particular I should know? Places I should visit. Tours to go on. Seems like a perfect combination of untarnished nature (The Highlands!) and bustling cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and York.

Thanks!

Seeing this reminds me that you can't defer to pritch.

Instead of a smiley, I'll offer:

Scotland is awesome. Well worth the trip. Edinburgh is one of the coolest cities I've ever visited. The scenery is breathtaking.

I'd never think of going to Scotland for New Year's Eve though I haven't been to the big cities there (except for flying through Glasgow). Been to Inverness and points West and it's beautiful and desolate and probably very cold and extremely windy in January. If you want something like Berlin I think you should try a place where civilization has been around for a long time, like Rome or Athens and of course Paris or London. York's in England and while a great city (more like a large town) again I'd never think of planning a New Year's there.

I've never been, but half of my family is from there.

They all love it.

I guess that doesn't help much.

That's what I'm expecting.

And of course I gather you've also visited the locations made famous in Mel Gibson's
unforgettable and legendary Braveheart? :)

I love love love Scotland. It is one of my most favorite places I've traveled. I was there Jan 2007 and, while I agree that it was cold and rainy at times, as long as you dress appropriately (and aren't a whiny individual) it is well worth it.

I spent New Year's in London, which was okay, but I agree that Edinburgh seems like it would be super. The city is really neat, good places to eat, amazing architecture, cool castle, interesting museums. On the two occasions that I've been, I've always felt like there was more I wanted to do.

For me though, the highlight of Scotland are the Highlands. We did a little tour (http://www.rabbies.com/scottish_tour_pages/loch_ness_inverness_2day_tour. asp?lng=en), which was excellent and gave us a chance to walk through a bit of the wild, see castles (including the one where Monty Python and the Holy Grail's annoying Frenchmen appeared), and look for Nessie.

Man I want to go to Scotland someday. I'd also like to golf there, and have a beer in a pub there too. That would rock.

I only went for a few days, but I absolutely loved it and wish I had stayed longer. We went to Edinburgh, saw the city and the castle, and went to another castle out in the country (Sterling?) We also took a trip up to Loch Lomond, which was beautiful and gave a great excuse to sing the song on repeat for several hours.

Especially the way I did the trip it wasn't very exciting but extremely relaxing. I wanted to move there.

Not Scotland regrettably although I'm adamant that with Prague we've found a rather worthy alternative. Thanks for the responses.

Good choice! Haven't been there but I've heard lots of good things. Make sure you visit the baby tower:
