View Full Version : Disturbing/surreal films

These are my types of films. Excuse how noobish this sounds, but I'm anxious for rec's of films that I can either watch online(shorts) or that I can get from Netflix that fit this description. I'm sick of conventional Hollywood and point A to point B narratives. I want unique. I want indescribable. I don't want incessant grotesquery, or fim seemingly crafted just to make someone say "WTF" and nothing more.
I appreciate the help fellow match-cutters.

I'd rather watch happy and optimistic films.

Watch William Friedkin's Bug.
I don't know why that was the first to come to mind. It's not even that surreal, although it's disturbing as all fuck.

Waking Life comes immediately to mind. Not so much disturbing as challenging, but definitely surreal. Not really my cup o' tea but you might enjoy it.

Lee Chang-dong's Oasis. Do it.:)
After you've digested the works of the usual suspects (Lynch, Jodorowsky, Maddin, Cronenberg, Buñuel), by all means move on to lesser spotlighted talents like Fernando Arrabal (Viva La Muerte, I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse, The Guernica Tree), Jan Svankmajer (Little Otik, Faust, numerous shorts), Seijun Suzuki (Pistol Opera, Princess Raccoon, Tokyo Drifter), and even some of Takashi Miike's films (Gozu, Big Bang Love: Juvenile A, Visitor Q).
In animated films, be sure to seek out: Cat Soup, Mind Game, Night on the Galactic Railroad and La Planète sauvage.
Some would recommend stuff like Begotten or Tetsuo, The Iron Man, tho I'm not too keen on those.
Above all, monitor the Film Discussion Thread and the yearly Film Consensus threads. That's where I've picked up great stuff like Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (recommended) and Funky Forest: First Contact (I like it but I can't recommend it to the uninitiated).

Oh yeah, Brothers Quay's films haven't been mentioned. The Svankmajer comment reminded me.

I second/third the Bros. Quay/Svankmejer recs. Street of Crocodiles (Quay) and Alice (Svankmajer) are good places to start. Or you could browse YouTube. You'll probably find some stuff there, but, especially with the Quays, you lose the details that make the films worthwhile.

Hmmm....surreal and disturbing....
Miike's Gozu, Visitor Q, and Izo
Svankmajer's Faust and Alice
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb
and to continue the stop-motion animation recs, The Adventures of Mark Twain
Kei Fujiwara's Organ
Chih-Hung Kwei's The Boxer's Omen
After you've exhausted feature films, there's always...
Televison series!
Must see's: Twin Peaks, Riget, The Prisoner, Lost, CarnivÃ*le, and yes, even Green Acres, tho the most disturbing aspect may be those post-abortive nostalgia-reunion TV specials, dahling.

I'm watching Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books. Very surreal.

Paranoia Agent
Speaking of Kon, I would say "disturbing" and "surreal" very much describe Perfect Blue.

Don't, it's sheer garbage. The other 3 D mentioned are good though.

I'll reiterate the recommendations for Eraserhead, Audition (though only parts of it are surreal), Un Chien Andalou, and Street of Crocodiles. Tetsuo seems to be a go-to movie for surreality and disturbingness, but I thought it was a bit silly in its hyperkinetic provocations.

Eh, I don't see it as taking itself too seriously though.

Yeah, I don't think it comes off as pretentious or anything. I guess I just don't care for silliness of the provocative kind.

Wasn't sure if the OP was looking for Disturbing AND Surreal or Disturbing OR Surreal.

I assumed he was looking for both. If not, then I'll second your recommendation of Irreversible, which is the most disturbing movie I can think of.

I think he was looking for non-Hollywood films which would mean anything Surreal or Disturbing, so films like Happiness, etc...

I've seen all of Lynch's feature length works except Dune and Fire Walk With Me. FWWM I'm saving for after I see the series, and Dune I'm just having trouble caring about.
I've seen Un Chien Andalou and Belle De Jour from Bunuel. Thought the former was very, very interesting, and I liked it a lot, and the latter I found painfully dry, but the ending saved it. I didn't hate it, but I had a hard time actually caring to finish it.
As for Yxk's list, I've seen these from that list:
The Holy Mountain- 9
Eraserhead- 10-
Videodrome- 9-
Naked Lunch- 9-
Seven- 8-
Blue Velvet- 9
Un Chien Andalou- 7+
Pi- 9
Breaking the Waves- 9+
The Trial- Didn't finish. Found it empty and unfulfilling. Shame.
I've seen and liked Bug. Loved Waking Life.
I really appreciate the rec's, guys/gals?

I'd say The Proposition has a certain element of surrealism. And it's certainly disturbing.

Good call, but I'd recommend watching the whole 2-disk set that's on, which has lots of great stuff:

The Night Of The Hunter is OK. Overrated as far as I'm concerned, but not bad. Netflix doesn't have Herzog's Nosferatu, which pisses me off greatly. I have Picnic, Trouble Every Day and Diary Of A Chambermaid in my queue already. I'll look into the others. Thanks.:)
