Here's what I wrote on the old site:
"Basically, I found the tone to be very different between the two films: Mon Oncle's seemed condescending towards (and/or bemused by) its characters, while Playtime's seemed benevolent and omniscient. Mon Oncle's "characters" were presented as hopelessly grating caricatures that demanded more depth, given their screen time, while Playtime wisely did away with the characters all together, explicitly presenting them as elements of a larger design. The two world's that were contrasted in Mon Oncle both seemed patently fake, making the idealization of Hulot's world and critique of the "modern" world seem ridiculous, while Playtime's exaggerations were made reasonable by its broad scope. Perhaps more importantly, I just didn't see anything of interest in Mon Oncle, while the interplay between people and place in Playtime kept me fascinated."
In other words, I thought Mon Oncle was nothing but a sequence of grating caricatures. It kind of irritated me. Kind of really irritated me.

Indeed. Tati, especially Playtime, is a completely different beast in the theater. The difference between seeing it on television and in the theater is just as large as 2001. Parade also went from being merely a good film to one of my favorites. There's something about seeing them with a large audience that's very much in tune with Tati's world view and makes the viewing experience much more fulfilling. Playtime simply loses too much detail, scope and perspective even on the biggest of televisions.

I'd really like to see this print. 2001, too. Although, with 2001, I think I might just end up preferring sitting at home with my Blu-Ray copy more.

Speaking of Blu-Ray. I'm still hoping that Criterion will revise their list and include Playtime. Seeing it in Hi-Def on a 50" screen may be the closest I ever come to seeing it properly. I've been trying for several years to convince our film society to bring in a 35mm print with no luck.

I have seen Playtime in 70mm and on my home TV. I loved it the same both times, so I cannot excuse those low ratings for improper viewing.

No kidding. My interest in cinema started off when my dad showed me Mon Oncle and City Lights, and these are two movies that I'll always consider as the most important.
