So I now have two copies of Rammstein's Mutter but neither of them play right in my old CD player though they play fine on the computer. I've got over 300 CDs and they all play fine except for this one. Seems like the pressing of the CD just doesn't jive with my player. The CD has this skipping noise throughout and it doesn't recognize the last few tracks. Any one have any experiences like this?

I've come the conclusion that I purchased bootleg CDs from both amazon and deepdiscount. I recall now that neither had that annoying sticker that seals it. I bought a third copy from a third party vendor (through amazon) - it has the sticker and plays just fine.

I'm not too into Soundgarden, but this new STP album is definitely a new sound for them. Which single are you talking about? You couldn't be talking about Take a Load Off, because that song is great, and the only other single from that album is Between the Lines, which is totally cool too.

STP were always my favorite of the "grunge" bands. They had the best melodies and hooks, and the most pop-sensibilities. Haven't heard the newest album, yet.

Okay, so... I don't know if any of you are even Pat Benatar fans, let alone willing to read her memoir, but I need to get rid of five copies of her book that Harper Collins sent me. I dunno. I'm not really expecting a huge turnout here, so it would be nice if some of you help me out by joining this contest (http://www.justpressplay.net/music/music-news/6727-win-pat-benatars-memoir-qbetween-a-heart-and-a-rock-placeq.html).

Anyone check out the new Roots CD?

Yup, first listened to it online three times on Monday, then bought it the next day. Loving it more and more ever since. It holds onto a great balance of having those amazing stand-alone songs like "The Day" and the title track, but still having tons of room for their signature mood interludes to make everything pop out and hold together in a really gratifying, thematic way.

My favourite since Phrenology.

Wow - the Flaming Lips track on Dark Night of the Soul, from Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, and David Lynch, is the best music they've made since The Soft Bulletin. It's amazing what some constraint and dynamic production can do.

Shit I need to hear that Dark Night of the Soul album. How much did Lynch contribute beyond the visual art?

Listening to Nirvana's live version of "Come as You Are" from their MTV unplugged. Great stuff. Grunge lives on emotionally for me.

Lynch did vocals on 2 tracks, and I think he offered "artistic direction" or something.

The only 2 tracks I don't care for are the ones with Black Francis and Iggy Pop. They just sound out of place, and I think they kind of spoil the mood and atmosphere of the album. Especially the Black Francis one - I'm really kind of tired of this guy.

I give band of the decade to The Secret Machines. While their output wasn't prolific, no other new music I heard this decade comes close to touching Nowhere is No Where and Ten Silver Drops - two of the most masterful rock albums I've ever heard.

Went to see David Bazan last night - he was great. However, one of the opening acts was terrible, and I mean really, really bad. And the worst part is, they seem to be enjoying a great deal of popularity. They're called The Satisfaction - an alt-RnB/Hip Hop thing. Two girls and a laptop. They had no rhythm, they couldn't sing, completely lacked flow, and their lyrics were dull. And yet they were playing at the Triple Door, the Sky Church, and played at the Capitol Hill block party this year. People cheered very loudly for them. It was completely baffling to me. The only thing I can think of is that they're some kind of performance art piece pulling the wool over everyone's eyes, and yet I'm not falling for it.

I'm liking it. It's got some very high highlights. But on the other hand, I feel like they become totally generic when they rock out on stuff like Month of May or Ready to Start. I don't really know what distinguishes these repetitive guitar riffs from a million others. I like both sets of companion songs a lot (Half Light and Sprawl).

The standout track for me on first listen is "Half Light II (No Celebration)." THere's another near the end that's pretty great, but I'm not sure which one it is.

But to be honest, I didn't keep good attention to the tracks. The album kinda blends together to where I didn't notice different songs. I'd say it's good, but not as great as their last album. But that's one of my favorite albums.

Sprawl II is fantastic, but I have to say I'm pretty underwhelmed by the rest of it. Win's songs, particularly the lyrics, are all pretty lacking. I just listened to Neon Bible again--just as cathartic, powerful, resonant, brilliant as it ever was. This feels pretty tame in comparison.

I like the sonic clash of electronica and metal riffs lifted by the vocals. Shame the album's so short, but I'll be enjoying this one for a while. Thanks for the heads-up, Derek.

So far that Moshimoss album, Hidden Tape No. 66, is my album of the year. So good. Creative, well produced, interesting sonic textures, simple yet effective melodies, and songs that flow together, creating an auditory landscape brimming with nostalgia; at times it ispeaceful, whimsical, and somber, always emotional.

What a discovery.

D_Davis
08-20-2010, 03:12 PM
Ah yes...more Moshimoss this morning. Hidden Tape No. 66 truly is a perfect album, elevating the art to a whole new level. It's like the best sounds from Sigur Ros, mixed in with some Marconi Union, but all filtered through a creative force that creates unique sonic textures and a distinct voice; it at once sounds familiar to those versed in post-rock and ambient music, while also sounding fresh and exciting. Moshimoss creates dense atmospherics, but never forgets the importance of melody, crafting what one might call pop-ambiance.

I haven't been this impressed with music since I first heard Marconi Union's Distance. That was the album that inspired me to end my 4-year hiatus from making music and start recording again under the name Carl Sagan's Ghost.

Why do artists/bands continue to use iTunes/Amazon when there is Bandcamp? It's totally artist-focused, the artist gets to keep more money, and manage their own music, it offers full length previews, and there are no ads.

Pretty much the best thing to happen to indie music since the Internet and digital recording.

What a douche. Yes - it may change the business. However, it'll never kill the art. Too many of these dinosaurs are worried about the business, and they've completely forgotten about the art, and about the reasons why they even made music in the first place. Good riddance.

"The Internet has destroyed rock. Children no longer develop social graces. They don't hang out anymore," she complains. "I'm financially stable. I'm okay. But what about the kids trying to make it in this business?"

Guess what? Kids will learn to adapt their art, and good music will still be made. And guess what again? Maybe it's time (or well past time) for rock 'n roll to die. It's been around a long time - and - SHOCK - there was a time before rock, you old bag. And - SHOCK - there will be a time after rock. The future - embrace it. Change. Adapt. Or you lose.

And a more balanced, sane opinion...

Stephen Thomas Erlewine recently named Dean Ween as "the greatest guitarist in '90s alt-rock" and by Boognish, I swear he's right. It's not just Deaner's incredible speed or mastery of myriad styles of music, his wonderful sense of humor or even his technical skills. What primarily separates him from the pack is his limitless creativity and miraculous understanding of mood and tone. And let me tell you, if you're one-half of the two-man band Ween -- the most unique musical collaboration of the 1990s and creators of possibly the most enjoyably fucked-up listening experiences one can have -- these sorts of gifts come in handy.

Man, that is so true.

Still feeling brown!

Heh. What's being destroyed is the old Mafia-esque distribution model that has made leeches like the RIAA so rich at the expense of the artists, and I for one, will be dancing on its grave.

It's called progress, Johnny. And PS, I never liked your music. And same with you, Stevie. You weren't ever half the musician Lindsey is.

ZING!

The final part of Harold Budd's and Clive Wright's trilogy came out a few months ago. I've been checking it out where and when I can.

Little Windows

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415rTocU78L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

It's more of a split LP than a true collaboration, but if you enjoyed Song for Loss Blossoms and Candylion, you'll enjoy this. It's nice to see Budd coming out of retirement, and I really hope that Clive Wright continues to make interesting music. He's definitely from the Robert Fripp school of infinitely-sustaining guitar, and I dig his style.

Probably mine too. I think we talked about this. I don't know it very well, but choosing any random track on Sandanista! is guaranteed to pique my interest. I love the variety. The ambition. I'm going to go for some negative rep here...

I like Big Audio Dynamite and Big Audio Dynamite II more than The Clash. The Globe is an amazing '90s pop album; while the songs themselves aren't incredibly complex or strong out of context, the album as a whole is great. It's all so well put together, and flows with creative energy.

I knew that growing up I was always supposed to like The Clash - I mean I was a skater-kid all through the '80s. But I just could never really get into them. But then again, we were weird skaters; we mainly skated to The Cure, The Smiths, and Echo and the Bunnymen, with Camper Van Beethoven on the side, and sometimes the Surf Punks.

What's the consensus on Liars? I only know 2 songs (I think), and they're both okay. This girl that kind of wants to ride this Spaceman's Spiff has been not-so-subtly hinting that I should go with her and some of her friends, but I dunno if it's worth the hassle, or the money ($15 - not extortionate - but I'm cash broke at the moment after paying off my tuition).

One of the best bands out there, IMO, and they played one of the best live sets I've seen. Aside from their previous self-titled album, all of their songs work better in the context of the album, so I wouldn't dismiss them on just two songs, especially since they usually change quite a bit from album-to-album.

"Starless," King Crimson
"Volcano," Beck
"When the Levees Break," Led Zeppelin
"Cursed Sleep," Bonnie "Prince" Billy

Wow - Le Noise is brilliant thus far. This is a guitar-lovers dream come true. A sonic masterpiece.

D_Davis

Lanois is a genius...

"But the core of the album is its extraordinary sound: a wide-screen intimacy conjured by just a voice and a guitar. Lanois had a surprise waiting for Young when he walked into his studio for the first time. The producer handed the singer a tricked-out acoustic guitar that made it sound like a small orchestra: a beefed-up bass response on the lower two strings, a pickup that re-creates the sound of the human voice and allows it to loop and echo through the song, and a tremolo amplifier.

“You get four dimensions of sound out of one acoustic guitar, and I thought it might inspire him to play a certain way,” Lanois says. “We got the clarity of the guitar with a rich, beautiful bottom, a great subsonic sound with no mumbo-jumbo. It started with that sound on that guitar and we recorded two songs. Then, at the end of the first session, we went electric on the song ‘Hitchhiker.’ That’s when things really started getting interesting.”

The hollow-body electric guitar was channeled through two amplifiers, one clean-sounding and the other for tremolo effect. Lanois saw even greater potential: “We covered both ends of the sound spectrum with the guitar. It’s got this cutting, razor-drill sound and this beautiful bass tone with sweet melody on the other end.”

Listened to the new Neil Young on a great pair of headphones last night. Unbelievable. I've never heard anything like it. Its so sonically dense and textured. He and Lanois created a masterpiece that is simultaneously epic and personal. If you love the guitar, and the sonic possibilities of that instrument, get the album and immerse yourself in its waves of noise, melody, reverb, and sound. It's the most uniquely produced album I've heard in a really long time. Lanois broke new ground with this one.

Listening to "Walk With Me," the first track on Le Noise, on a good pair of headphones is like hearing the guitar for the first time. It's almost as if you're inside the guitar, hearing every little hit, scrape, vibration, and thump. It's absolutely mind blowing. Young's playing is on a whole new level - he keeps the melodic structure while still experimenting with strange chords and phrasing. And Lanois captures every little nuance with the ear of a master craftsman, adding effects, some looping, and sampling at the most perfect moments. It's a stunning musical achievement.

I've listened to it a bunch, but I still can't quite put it up there with their other two. "Revival" and "Desire Lines" are among their best tracks yet, with "Helicopter" not far behind. And his first solo album (well, actually it's a duo-album, with another touch-guitarist) called Descending sounds excellent. Cool glitching stuff with some really nice guitar playing. Reminds me a bit of David Torn, but not quite as abrasive.

I had grown a little tired of his overly precious orchestrations, but The Age of Adz while still unmistakably his (and not likely to convert any dissenters), certainly has some growth, inward at the least. It feels more personal than before where he was almost trying to shoe-horn personal artistic statements into overarching themes. There's more experimentation with synth and electronics and instead of making 20 ditties coalesce into one grand statement, almost every song is in itself a mini statement about himself, taking his plaintive lyrics and making them into powerful short stories. As before, almost no other artist can make such simple gestures feel so important and weighty, whether they are or not.

I'm a fan and love the new album as well. I don't love it quite as much as Illinoise, but it's definitely a step forward artistically.

I'm ultimately disappointed with the new Eno album. It's OK. You can tell it is comprised largely of a series of jam sessions. The album lacks a cohesive drive, but it does contain some nice moments.

In this day and age with all the amazing, and free, experimental/electronic music out there, an artist like Eno who charges for his work needs to release something really, really amazing to get my money. I listened to the album a few times on NPR, and then went back to enjoying the CC Licensed stuff I dl'ed that same week. I'll probably never return to the Eno album. That kind of sucks.

Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Return of Chico Dusty (Big Boi)

All this love for High Violet pleases me greatly.

I wanted to also say a few words about the new Arcade Fire. The album as whole was an epic disappointment for me. With the exception of a few tracks, namely Empty Room and Sprawl II, which are top-notch, the album is a lackluster performance by them, especially when compared to the colorfully inspired and morbidly awesome High Violet and other superb indie having come out this year (see lists above for more on this). It's too laden with that awful polished pop-cheese sound * la WILCO at their most annoying levels. (I like WILCO but I when they pull that shit I get furious.) Funeral will stand the test of time but I feel like Suburbs is destined to fade out and end up in one of those discount bins you see in record stores (internet sarcasm flag). It's not bad but it's just not very good either. Right. Now I feel better about that. **exhales**

I liked Yesterday and Today fine, barring the interminable last track. In fact, his version of "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" may be my favorite by him, "Everday" willing.

I've been a huge fan of Donuts since it was recommended to me here at MC right around its release (and Jay's passing) in early 2006, and it's been a great joy to watch it gain popularity in the music world. I especially love how it has influenced so many recent artists, as I initially thought it would likely turn out to be the only thing of its kind. Now to see how long it takes to become a cliche. Regardless, I feel a sort of allegiance to the record and am very pleased by your high opinion of it.

Not a big fan of that remix. (On my crap laptop speakers) it doesn't seem to fully utilize the original's maximal shoegaze quality, which is what I love most about that specific M83 album.

Any witch house fans around here? I've been obsessed with the genre's poppier offerings, but the creepier, Knife-aping stuff can be cool as well.

oOoOOO is off and on, but "Hearts" and especially "NoSummr4u" are some of my most listened to cuts this year. "NoSummr4u" sounds like The Knife's "Heartbeats" with Lil Wayne beats, and is a hit on every recent mixtape I've made.

Balam Acab's See Birds EP is hands down my favorite witch house record. The first two cuts are the darkest (i.e. most witch house-y) and therefore get the most attention, but the thing is remarkably elating overall. With slow, monstrous beats, combinations of hazy and precise synths, and reverby chipmunk vocals, it can be damn near triumphant at times.

It may turn out to be a passing trend, but I imagine a lot of potential for this genre.

The next few days will be filled with nothing but Mick Karn related music. Don't know if many of you listen to Japan, and all of the amazing albums the members of Japan made during their solo careers, but this group of musicians created some of the most creative music of all time. Each of them has a unique sound, and each has changed the face of music in their own way. This is especially true with Mick Karn's bass playing. There was no other bassist like him.

I'm looking for help.

I'm trying to search for music that exists in a format that I'm not really familiar with. I bought the System of a Down - Hypnotize CD a long time ago and it came with a bonus DVD. On the bonus DVD, which I never played until recently, it has the entire album recorded in Enhanced Stereo. It sounds much better than the CD version and also has images on screen as it's playing.

I'm trying to find other artists that have had prints like this but I can't find a way to search for it. Searching for music DVDs just comes up with live concerts and music videos, which isn't what I want. I want full albums on the same DVD Enhanced recording.

Does anyone know how to search for something like this or what these releases are called.

System of Down's wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnotize_(album))comes up with a "DualDisc edition — DVD side" which seems to be what I'm looking for but I can't find a way to search for the specific format.

I just did a google on this out of curiosity.

Enhanced stereo is usually 48-kHz/16-bit pulse-code modulation, whereas CD is 44.1/16-bit. So you're getting some improvement, but not loads. In the rare instance you have 96-kHz/24-bit, then you'll notice the difference more depending on your audio setup. Source http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.php?tid=2075

Is it Sony? I read that Sony discontinued manufacturing these DVDs.

You might try e-bay.

Yeah, this was the Dual-disc trend that record companies were trying to push for a while about five or so years back, around the same time they were pushing Super Audio CDs, which died because they couldn't play in actual CD players.

I also have that Hypnotize one and I remember that enchanced DVD version sounding really great, mainly because of how many more channels it was coming out than typical stereo. But I don't know of too many other albums that were put out that way as their main release at the time, though I remember some catalogue ones like Back In Black and Automatic For The People being around for a while in the same format, nothing else with a day and date release like System's comes to mind. I think my dad got a Dual-disc of the first Velvet Revolver CD for 5 bucks clearance not too many years ago, but I can't say I know of too many others or where I would find them now.

Thanks guys.

The main reason why I wanted to investigate this format is because I have an after-market stereo system in my car, equipped with an in dash DVD player. The enhanced audio is very obvious in an enclosed area like a car. I also really loved how the DVD screen would actually have different images depending on which song was on, in addition to the track title.. etc.

So I figure if there were other albums I listened to that had this, I might as well get the DVD version rather than the CD version.

But it doesn't look like you can search for other albums based on that.

So, anyone from Germany here? I was recently interviewed for Beat Magazine. Here are some scans of the images:

The opening paragraph roughly translates:

Space is cold, full of radiation and unfriendly. the music of Daniel Davis is warm, cozy and inviting. So why did the Seattle-based producer name his ambient project "Carl Sagan's Ghost" after an astronomer? As Davis explains, for him its not about discovering distant galaxies, but rather a much nearer and therefore even more unfathomable cosmos: the mysterious inner world of human states of consciousness.

I've finally found a DJ/MC I can work with - so, hopefully within the next couple of months, I can finally lay down a couple of tracks, maybe get a mixtape up and released.

I'm not used to being rehearsed, though - I've primarily been a sidewalk cypher, since I was thirteen. So, this ought to be interesting.
