From House of Horrors (http://www.houseofhorrors.com/):
Cthulhu is the best horror film I've seen this year. It's also one of the best Lovecraft films ever made. The movie is an apocalyptic nightmare that resonates with an increasing hum until it finally shatters at the end, leaving us to pick up the pieces and wonder about what it all meant. Of course, it might've all meant nothing, which was always the dark undercurrent of Lovecraft's stories: the notion that for all our passion and hope, the scope of the universe renders us inconsequential.
Maybe the problem with all those other Lovecraft works is that they depend too much on the man's words. The most successful director of such films remains Stuart Gordon, but his affairs are mostly black comedy, using Lovecraft's bizarre bestiary for stories that are goofier than they are frightening. By using Lovecraft's collected works as a slight backbone, director Dan Gildark is free to create a story that keeps his own interests without losing the spirit of the master.
Gildark's story, credited to co-producer Grant Cogswell, revolves around a gay college professor named Russ (Jason Cottle) who returns home upon news of his mother's death. As executor of her estate, he's forced to stay in the small town he was only too happy to leave behind. During his stay, an accumulation of details, from a mysterious rock to strange disappearances, suggest that this small town, like all horror movie small towns, has a dark secret.
This is not a fast film, but viewers who give it their attention will be rewarded. Gildark and Cogswell emphasize the characters at the beginning of Cthulhu, developing their relationships with real emotional heft. Russ resents his father, who only wants him to forsake his homosexuality and join the family. His sister Dannie can't get pregnant; she hides behind a too-cheerful smile. Russ has deep feelings for Mike, a local man he remembers from school, but Mike insists he isn't gay.
That attention to character anchors the movie, lending its gradual revelations the real drama they rightly deserve. When answers come, they are fast and fleeting: a shocking image lit by photo-flash, or a brief memory of rape. And when those various threads merge together at the conclusion, it's not just satisfaction we feel, but sympathy, and a deep sense of sadness.
None of this would be possible without the tremendous work of Jason Cottle, who takes a character that must've seemed frightening on a the page and made him into a sympathetic leading man. His homosexuality isn't hidden in the film, but it isn't exploited. Hell, most heterosexual relationships in horror don't feel as genuine or careful as this one, which allows Russ and Mike the time to actually grow toward each other. If such stories aren't your thing, grow a pair of balls and get over yourself. Clive Barker's been doing this for years, and he's one of the all-time greats.
Against the characters and the story lies a film that is executed with remarkable, precise control of mood. Cinematographer Sean Kirby has soaked the film in heavy hues of blue, and his steady control of handheld keeps the film poised somewhere between the elegance of The Shining and the immediacy of 28 Days Later. Helicopter shots give us wide views of a film that increases in scale, successfully evoking the idea of the end of the world. Etta Lilienthal, the production designer, creates ominous settings out of the simplicity of an abandoned alley, or an overly warm household, or an old boathouse with spiraling writing on the wall.
I feel compelled to mention all these names because Cthulhu is so damned good. When I see a horror film that compels and involves and challenges, right up to the maddening (and perfect) conclusion, I'm thankful. It's easy to remake a classic with shock cuts and young actors, or to go with the blood-and-guts crowd who take the scraps like starving pups. This was clearly a hard film to make, from the topical issues to the handling of its inspiration, but Cthulhu makes it look easy. It's the type of horror movie that reminds me of why I fell in love with them.

Thanks. If you go to the website and click Schedule, a list of viewings should pop up. I just hope it comes to DVD soon so more people can check it out.
Hell. I forgot about Tori Spelling. She did a good job. Whoda thunkit?

Only just saw the trailer for this last week, but have to admit it looked pretty straight-to-video to me. If it's better than that, cool.

Don't slam STV.
There's a lot of stuff that's STV (or given so limited a release that it might as well be), and is much, much better than anything in theatres. Especially with the horror market.
The Last Winter and Wendigo (both by Larry Fessenden) are two I have seen recently that are fantastic "little" horror gems.
Also Altered, an alien horror movie by one of the directors of The Blair Witch Project, is a pretty effective little movie, and has some very disturbing content.
This year's Midnight Meat Train was set for a wide-release but got shafted when LionsGate was taken over. It's getting great reviews, and people are equating it with The Mist in terms of reviving the good old-fashioned grown-up horror tale (none of this "stupid teenagers" stuff).
And if you're interested in the whole Lovecraft thing, I very heartily recommend The Call of Cthulhu. It's a short film (45 minutes) from 2005, and is silent, and done with special effect reminiscent of those used during the silent era. It's very creepy, and the effects (both make-up and costume/SFX) are really cool if you're into that intentionally dated look. I'd say it's the most faithful Lovecraft-inspired movie I have seen thus far, especailly in terms of thematics.
Though I'm hoping this movie Cthulhu will be a new favorite :)

Session 9 and Dog Soldiers were pretty much straight-to-DVD, too, and I love those flicks.

I agree. Fantastic experiment.
This looks very good too. I'd never heard of it until now.

I've been interested in the monster Cthulhu ever since I first heard of it. But one thing keeps bugging me about it - how the hell do you pronounce it?

I can't say the trailer has me sold on it at all, but I'm glad to hear you liked it so much and the film certainly looks very ambitious, subject matter-wise and especially as a horror film. I don't think the "Lovecraftian" film genre has come close to exhausting or fully tapping into the things that makes the guy's stories so frightening, and it seems (with that one epically surreal shot of a massively active and unbelievably blue ocean in the trailer in mind) remedying that fact is a main point on this film's agenda. To a pretty darn exciting extent, too: I mean, the title - plainly and clearly the namesake of Lovecraft's most infamous entity; look at that poster; then in the trailer, water everywhere and freaky little statues (awkwardly presented in the trailer, though) - almost indecent assault of Lovecraft.

In my mind, the main point of the film is to finally present a successful Lovecraft story that would work completely on its own terms, were he absent. The characters are vivid and realistic, the cinematography is lush, the mystery elements are explored with precision and efficiency. Despite the title, this is a Lovecraft movie for people who don't know a thing about the guy.

I thought it was pretty great. While one or two moments felt a tad heavy-handed, I was surprised by how well the gay aspect was handled. After the trailers at the beginning of the DVD, I was half-expecting the movie to use the whole Esoteric Order of Dagon thing as an allegory for how gays feel hated by the world...but no, the fact that the lead character is gay had genuine impact on the story and events taking place, rather than resorting to preachiness.
I thought Jason Cottle handled the lead role very well, carrying the movie on his shoulders since much of the other acting was awful (that boyfriend Mike was horrid).
And wow, what beautiful cinematography. Cthulhu is an incredible movie to look at.
Its flaws were few and far between for me, and are greatly outweighed by how nicely Lovecraft's ideas were handled and transported to a modern setting.

I was waiting for you to come back and absolutely trounce it, since I'd built it up so much. Great to see you liked it. Yes, it is beautiful - the final scenes are spellbinding. There's a bit of Pulse in those vistas of the end of the world.

The swooping shots of the people coming out of the sea were haunting.

I hope you like it.
DO NOT let the trailers at the beginning of the DVD scare you off.
I did some research, and this movie was NOT intended as an "only for gays/lesbians" feature. It's because of the gay aspect of the story that it was picked up for DVD distribution by Here! - a company specializing solely in entertainment for the gay/lesbian community.
The trailers at the beginning of the DVD are freaking awful, so yeah, keep in mind that this is not indicative of the movie itself.

Watched this again last night.
It's freaking phenomenal, and I am going to push it up on my 2009 list.
The way that Michael's being in denial of being gay echoes Russ' coming to accept his roots and his destiny as a crucial part of the apocalypse. It's wonderfully played.
A horror film with depth of narrative and character, and a haunting finale.
This really is something special.

I realize a comment of this sort more properly belongs in the lit thread, but....
This thread and trailer intrigued me to look up Lovecraft's story and read it, and it's pretty flippin' sweet.

Have you read Arthur Machen's "The Great God Pan"? Huge inspiration to Lovecraft. And Stephen King's recent short story "N." takes a similar tack with the layers of epistolary and the gradual reveals.
Oh, and I bought this flick yesterday. Apparently the DVD was created as part of a gay/lesbian line of DVDs, which is a bit unfair. Because I think the film isn't strictly "queer cinema," but a film that happens to be about a gay character.

Anyone going to tell me what Zalgo is?
He Waits Behind The Wall, in a palace of tortured glass, served by legions forged from the tears of the sleepless dead and clad in armor carved from the suffering of mothers. In his right hand he holds a dead star, and in his right hand he holds the Candle Whose Light Is Shadow. His left hands are stained with the blood of Am Dhaegar.
His six mouths speak in different tongues, and the seventh shall sing the song that ends the earth.

This meme reminds me of that Onion story where Youtube challenged its users to make a "good" video.
EDIT: Just found this. (http://knowyourmeme.com/forums/1-general/topics/35-zalgo) It may or may not be the truth behind this stupid meme, but it makes sense, and the author seems to have the right amount of bored detachment.
I've bolded sections I feel are worthwhile.
I’m leaving this because it is officially over.
Zalgo was originally created in 1998 as a Super Hoax/get rich quick scheme titled “Bawaji” by now defunct short-film studio Zeke and Ralph Productions (ZNR) in Portland, OR. The proprietors of ZNR, Robb and Nolan (last names witheld- Im sure you’ll understand why) had originally decided on a UFO hoax but, later deciding UFO’s were real, thought a more plausible hoax would be something leading to the end of the world hysteria surrounding 2000 and the Y2K. We were going to create and sell a product that “offered nothing, did nothing, promised everything and cost a fortune”. Thus Bawaji was born. Unfortunately no one could spell it right so we had to change the name.
What we needed was a product that sold exclusively from word of mouth and had nothing to do with elegant code, shiny finishes, solid workmanship or quality merchandise- we needed mass praise for having done nothing and we needed referrals. We used to define the referral process as “That hive-minded zombie algorithm that sensible people have deep embedded in their psyche which allows them to abandon research and logic for the ease of simply taking someone else’s word for it”.
Then we got jobs and raises and promotions at our real places of business and Bawaji/ZAlgo got put on the back burner.
Until late 2003, 2004.
As the internet became an entity more closely resembling what it is today we started working on Bawaji/ZAlgo as a hoax simply to mess with people more than anything else. There was no longer the Get Rich Quick angle because we couldn’t imagine how to actually do that without going to jail. We decided that religious cults are always fun and had set out to play at starting one based around the internet as an living entity and some darker overtones.
Our original idea was to found a cult based on Christian principles but later deduced that most Christianity-based cults go horribly wrong and usually end up with the leaders dead or in jail so we figured why not start with a doomsday cult and expect that it will go horribly right?
What we really needed, however, was more time and a clear deadline. Our original plans for Bawaji only gave us less than two years between the day we had the idea and 01.01.2000, not nearly enough time. What we figured- using Jim Jones, David Koresh and Heavens Gate as templates- was about a decade and the then-obscure Mayan Baktun calendar year 2012 was close enough as anything was going to get.
We decided on the date 4.04.2012 for three reasons- 12.21.2012 was taken, 2012 was as good a year as any and 404 was a popular number on the internet and the numerologist conspiracy theory nutjobs would have a field day with it.
Now all we needed was a deity. Originally going back to the intended marks as being “hive-minded zombie alorythm” types we decided a good deity name would be ZAlgo. (The “hive-minded zombie algorithm” was shortened to ZAlgo, as you may have seen it on the ’net.) We used a lot of typical “He Who Waits Behind the Wall” (referring to the mythical locked gate in Jerusalem that, when breached, will begin the End Of Days juxtaposed against Stephen Kings He who Walks Between The Rows from Children of the Corn) and “will sing the last song at the dying of the earth” which was inevitably shortened to “sings the last song of earth” which was plucked from Norse mythology. Those guys sang of EVERYTHING. Believe it or not some of the other stuff surrounding Zalgo we had nothing to do with at all. It did pick up a certain amount of its own steam for a while.
But to sell it all we had to do was say H.P. Lovecraft had written of ZAlgo.
Of course he hadnt. Ever. In none of his works has Lovecraft ever referenced anything named ZAlgo. We expected to get called out on that first and had even considered spreading internet rumors about a lost Lovecraft short story or letter or something but then “it must be true- I read it on the internet” took over so we just didnt pursue that.
Thus ZAlgo was born (admittedly without the capitalized “A”) and he was to be the Bringer Of Chaos- neither good nor bad. He just WAS. Or was NOT as it evolved.
The first logical dropping off point for Zalgo was the internet bulletin boards because those kids will buy into anything. We expanded on ideas by Marilyn Manson of bringing hopeless disillusioned nobodies into the mix because they have an infinite amount of collective income and no common sense to spend it on but more so because they are an un-leadable group starving for a leader. Add to it the Anonymous freedom provided by the web and the kids like you find on 4chan’s /b/tards rosters and you get an army of pliable minds wiling to disrupt and spam and create repetitive chaos simply because they have little else to do with their time.
ZAlgo was a forced meme before we even knew what a forced meme was.
Its important to point out that ZAlgo never originally was intended to be a “he” at all. ZAlgo just was, or was not, hence the black tendrils. I originally defined ZAlgo as “simply encroaching darkness” and had mentioned that if it could be seen then it would look kinda like Spiderman’s nemesis Venom and had drawn a quick representation on the funnies page during a rather dull sales meeting with a black Pilot G-2 gel-roller pen. Basically it was Venom kiling Ziggy… damn I hate Ziggy. I still have that cutout from a paper in 2003.
The rest is history, I suppose. The cult never even got close to getting started, the meme as it would be called today is dying out and the /b/tards are tired of the reference. Even Wikipedia wont carry the page anymore and google searches are all but nonexistent.
And we never made a dime from it.
/ZAlgo
