View Full Version : Films associated with post-collegiate ennui

I've been brainstorming about films that represent the idea of post-grad depression for the past few months. I've been asked to write an article for a fairly well-known alternative weekly and I've just recently started to compose the column. It's taken a little while, of course, because I'm having difficultly finding a structure (which, coincidentally, is one of the main topics in the article). In many cases, the characters are too freewheeling to settle into 9-5 day jobs, but too smart to settle for a minimum wage job, so they often become jaded slackers.

The list below is what I've compiled so far. All are American, so I'm looking for foreign releases that would also fit the bill (if such a dilemma occurs in other nations--I'm sure it does, but it just seems more prevalent in american society where we're told we can achieve whatever we want from the age of six). Also, films from different decades are desired.

The Graduate (1967)
Slacker (1991) (well, Linklater has made a career out of this theme)
Reality Bites (1994)
Kicking and Screaming (1995)
Funny Ha Ha (2003) / Mutual Appreciation (2006)

Although I don't think they specifically deal with characters just finishing college, they do address young men entering the work force for the first time. Some sort of schooling is mentioned in Il Posto at least.

Il Posto (1961)
I Vitelloni (1953)

I think we should wait for iosos to give the definitive answer. This is his favorite sub-genre, after all.

The only thing worse than post-collegiate ennui is pre-collegiate ennui.

or pre-collegiate/post-menapausal/pre-pubescent ennui for that matter.

Ok, then I hope you'll chime in when I get to my column on postpartum depression.

Anyone else find that ennui is almost inappropriately fun to say?

en-WHEE!

I believe that is pronounced ahn-whee.

I just wanted to emphasize the "Whee!". I didn't want to get all pronunciative about it.

It's more fun my way though. Like saying "vahze." Makes me feel all proper-like.

I honestly have never bothered to find out just what "ennui" means. Maybe because of this thread I finally will look it up. Or someone here will just tell me and continue to enable my laziness. Whichever way, I win :P

It's a sad day for our generation when people are too lazy to point and click a mouse.

And I thought my parents yelling at me for not mowing the lawn was bad.

Are we trying to imitate ennui by writing lots of posts and never getting anywhere? Or is this thread coming about so humorously by pure chance?

Whatever the intent of it, I vote that Madman's best post ever. That's it. I have no reason to post here now. Except to simply do it out of habit or boredom. Posting has lost all of its meaning. Thanks a lot Winston.
