Why? And why is this movie being made? Who should play Bill Hicks then? I never saw much of his standup so I donno.

Does Crowe even have a sense of humor?

Funny. But there is obviously a difference between blanket dislike and thinking he is completely wrong for a given role.

That's bound to piss number8 off.....

And I like Russell Crowe as an actor, although he is an asshole. But yeah I really have no clue if he's the right fit for this role. Playing a comedian usually should involve an actor who has some sense of humor. Which is why I guess Jim Carrey was the right choice for Andy Kaufman.

I think Russell Crowe is a wonderful human being and wish he was my dad.

So who's going to be making up the supporting cast? Willem Dafoe as Denis Leary? Let's speculate our asses off!

I feel the same way about Bill Hicks.

I bought 2 of his albums a few years ago, listened to them, and I laughed a couple of times. I don't think he is funny, but I do like some of the stuff he has to say, especially the stuff about mushrooms cleaning off his third eye.

Someone else! Man, for the longest time I thought I was the only one! I like Hicks, I think he was a very intelligent guy, but I just don't find him all that funny. Some of his observations are very witty, but they don't translate well to a stand-up routine. I think he's one of the more overrated comics, if only because he's put on this pedestal by practically everyone I know as one of the funniest men to walk this planet. In all honesty he rarely makes me laugh.

I don't normally watch stand-up comedy to laugh. I watch it as a performance and as a monologue and I find his presence warm and his material stellar, in the sense that it is interesting.

Milky Joe

Bill Hicks was more of a preacher than he was a comedian, honestly. With dick jokes (and to be fair, they're always extremely creative dick jokes). It's what he stood for and what he railed against so poignantly, brilliantly, and with so much fire that makes him the most important 'comedian' ever. To me, anyway, and quite a few other people. That said, I laugh my ass off listening to him, and not at the dick jokes.

That's what makes the notion of a 'Hollywood biopic' about the guy so depressingly contradictory.

I always though I was the only one as well!

I think I would have preferred Hicks if he wasn't a comedian.

I've never really been into edgy humor though. I'd rather listen to stuff like Mitch Hedberg or Dimitri Martin.

Well, you and I differ completely. I watch comedy to laugh. Be it a stand-up routine, TV show, movie, play, etc. I want to laugh. Doesn't mean I won't like it if I don't, but that's my primary motivation. I love to laugh, and if a comedy can elicit that response from me, I'm going to remember it favorably.

Well it's not like I don't want to laugh. I just have learned not to expect much from stand-up comedy, as the material that tends to get higher exposure isn't very inspired stuff I've found. This is why I've learned to try and get a sense of what exactly it is they're trying to communicate and appreciate them for their performance rather than just look for lulz. Either way, I'm sure we can all agree that Mencia is a d-bag.

I understand what iosos was trying to say, because I'm the same way. I think I've posted this in another thread before. Bill Hicks is my favorite stand-up comedian not because he makes me laugh the hardest, but that his stage presence is incredible. And I don't think you can fully grasp that by listening to his audio tapes. He's a very animated performer, too. Even when he's not being funny, he always has something interesting to say. I tend to gravitate more towards stand-ups with fascinating observations than the ones who can deliver "funny jokes".

I like the story in the "It's Just a Ride" doc where his local reverend told him that he has what it takes to be a preacher, and Hicks' response was, "I am one."

I'm quite a fan of Lewis Black. Despite his faux-anger and his lame Comedy Central persona, he's had some really great stand-up routines. My dad is a big fan and has all of his CDs, so I've heard a lot of his material. He definitely brings the lolz when he's not mugging for Comedy Central.

Perfect example of what I was saying before. I find ADC very fascinating, not just in terms of his quizzical popularity, but as an act itself. The Iceman is a construction of pure machismo--it's an act, a performance, and I find Clay's approach to it far more interesting and worthwhile than a guy standing up telling stand-up jokes. I can't take my eyes off him.

I kinda like him. I've been criticized for it frequently, but whatever. The way he delivers jokes is usually enough to make me laugh, and when I saw him recently, he had a solid twenty-minute set.

I don't understand the volatile reaction to him, except as a reaction to all the childish praise from fans that consider him Jesus in faux-faded jeans.

Yeah, the entirety of his Rant in E-Minor is just utterly fantastic. This is what Tom Waits said about it when he put it on his list of his most cherished albums of all time (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2005/mar/20/popandrock1):

"Bill Hicks, blowtorch, excavator, truthsayer and brain specialist, like a reverend waving a gun around. Pay attention to Rant in E Minor, it is a major work, as important as Lenny Bruce's. He will correct your vision. His life was cut short by cancer, though he did leave his tools here. Others will drive on the road he built. Long may his records rant even though he can't."
