I didn't see the third, but I guess they are getting close to the entire cast of the first film back... Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Paul Walker and Vin...

I didn't hate the first film but I liked Vin's character...

potential to be mediocre? or as bad as Tokyo Drift probably was...

It's true yo.

As terrible as it should have been, the third one is actually extremely well-made for what it is. Lin seems to be the only director of these so far that knows how to make the action somewhat engaging.

He's doing this one too so as much as I hate to admit I'm looking forward to this one... I kind of am. The last one surprised me.

Edit: OK maybe a bit less now after watching that interview and remembering how much I hate Paul Walker.

I like him to. I am looking forward to Babylon A.D.

I would love for his SF stuff to be more successful. He loves the genre, and it's cool to see someone treat it with some respect, even if the films are less than perfect. Riddick is a character and franchise I would support.

Don't be.

Babylon A.D. hits theaters this coming weekend, August 29th, but apparently it's not going to be the movie that even its director, Mathieu Kassovitz, wanted it to be. In a rather eye-opening interview with AMC, Kassovitz opens up about the problems he had with Fox and the troubles with the film. If you're one of those people who thought it wouldn't be a problem if Fox ended up getting the distribution rights to Watchmen, just wait until you read about the things they did to Kassovitz and the situation they've left him in - I think you'll change your mind. This is truly a tragic story to hear and unfortunately it's too late to do anything anyway. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience."

Kassovitz starts off this tragic tale by explaining that "the scope of the original book [that this is based on] was quite amazing." But unfortunately the result is not the same. "It's pure violence and stupidity," Kassovitz says. And that's not a good thing that he's describing. "The movie is supposed to teach us that the education of our children will mean the future of our planet. All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters… instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24." If a director is saying that about his own movie, you definitely know something went wrong, very wrong. Kassovitz attempts to explain how the entire film slipped out of his hands and into Fox's, which is where all the problems began.

Apparently the film had production problems from the start, including weather delays and budget concerns. "Fox was sending lawyers who were only looking at all the commas and the dots. They made everything difficult from A to Z." Then, as we know, Fox stepped in around April and cut the film down, quite a bit. The official running time is supposedly only 90 minutes, but apparently that's much shorter (or different) than it could have been. Kassovitz says that "I know what I had — I had something much better in my hands but I just wasn't allowed to work." And he goes on to say "I don't see how people who went through all these amazing blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Iron Man this summer will take it." That's probably the smartest thing I've heard, considering most filmmakers just shrug off other movies like that.

I knew there were problems with Fox and Babylon A.D. earlier this year when we reported that they were cutting it down, but I didn't even know Kassovitz was this upset. That explains why he's not doing any press for the film. I actually was excited to see this, based on the trailers, but now I'm not even sure I will. Hearing what Kassovitz said has left me quite depressed and quite angry at Fox. Now you know why I am so adamantly fighting against their acquisition of Watchmen. Hearing a director say "I had something much better in my hands" is such a sad thing to hear. And if we can leave you, or anyone, with a bit of wisdom, we'll let Kassovitz tell it to you. "I should have chosen a studio that has guts. Fox was just trying to get a PG-13 movie. I'm ready to go to war against them, but I can't because they don't give a shit."

First one is still the best; a great little B-movie. Never bothered with the second one.

This one is about on par with the last one. More of a direct sequel to the first. Certainly better action than that one though. I can barely remember anything from that one. However, the decision to go all special effects extravaganza here doesn't add anything either.

Yeah, I think most reviews mentioned that fact too when it came out.

What I love is how they even recreated the dynamic in the leads. Walker's performance was as wooden and bland as Reeves, and Diesel's was as brotherly charismatic as Swayze.

Also, there's a Chinese movie called Legend of Speed (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0234105/) that I saw on video just a couple of months before The Fast & The Furious came out and there are a ton of similarities, most glaringly the handicapped mechanic building a secret weapon car. I was convinced that they saw these two movies and combined them.

I just went to the theater and the parking lot was packed. I saw Adventureland which had maybe 20 people. I assumed a lot of people must've been at Fast and Furious.

I work at a 17-screen movie theater.

Fast and Furious was originally planned to be shown in three rooms, but on Friday night (and apparently Friday night only), it was shown in three more rooms to accomodate the huge PM turn out. As a matter of fact, the movie was set to play in three rooms at the same time. However, this did not solve the problem of customers complaining about the lack of available seats.

I'm sure the ushers had a hell of a time cleaning up each theater. The janitors, who usually start cleaning the place at 2 in the morning, were still cleaning up 7 hours later.

Also, the day before, we showed a midnight screening. I worked box-office from 12:30 to 5:30, and by 5:30, seventy-plus tickets had been sold. But here's the really surprising part: the movie was shown in two different theaters.

I like the two different motives between Dom and Brian. Had a different feel from the first movie.

1. Wasn't expecting; Letty to die in the first 5 minutes of the movie

2. Glad they finally put a fucking Sti in these movies. Made good use of it too.

3. I still enjoy watching the first movie the most. The characters are more likable. In this movie we have three of the same characters, but all they do is conflict with either the enemies, or annoying FBI agents. Mia and Brian's love interest

4. The opening was way lamer than I was expecting.

5. The finale was worse.

"We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages,” Diesel explained. “The studio said, ‘You can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!’"

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast & Furious 6. Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favorites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.

Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.

Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.

Michelle Rodriguez: the actor franchises cannot kill!

No Tokyo Drift is the last in the timeline so far. "The events in the film take place AFTER the events of Fast & Furious and Fast Five. Vin Diesel shows up in a cameo in the final scene, saying he "rolled with" Han. The opening scene of Fast & Furious shows the two working side by side, until Han has to go his own way and go to Tokyo."

Han goes to Tokyo and dies in Tokyo Drift. He is alive and pre-Tokyo in all the other movies.

Honestly at this point I don't think they give a shit about that anymore. I actually asked Justin Lin and Sung Kang that question back when the fourth movie was coming out. They just laughed it off and joked about Han being replaced by his twin brother like how John Woo got Chow Yun Fat to come back for A Better Tomorrow 2 despite him dying in the first one. This does not need to be taken that seriously.

I take it VERY seriously.

Question: Is Diesel the lead now?

I've seen all these movies and enjoyed them. I can't say I watched them all that carefully. Still, it seems like in the last one Walker was still the focus.

"Dragon Tattoo" and "Pirates" are good examples, but I also think they're a case where characters (Lisbeth) or actors (Depp) upstaged the material, not that that material made a conscious switch in leads.

Ha, this is pretty good. AICN got a scoop on what the plot of Fast and Furious 7 is going to be, and who the villain is. Relevant to the discussion of this thread, if you don't care about spoiling the ending to this movie.

F&F6 will end with Han's death from Tokyo Drift. We'll find out that Han's death isn't an accident. The car that slams into him is actually driven by... Jason Statham.

Statham will play the older brother of the villain played by Luke Evans in this. The plot of 7 will be him systematically taking revenge on Dom's crew for what they did to his brother. Dom is probably in Japan at the end of Tokyo Drift to investigate Han's death, and recruits Lucas Black to join him in taking down Statham.

So James Wan will not be returning, citing that stress on the set of F7 made it an unpleasant experience for him.

To add to that, "reports" state that the stress he speaks of was inflicted on him by Vin Diesel.

This is honestly the first time I have ever heard anything even remotely negative about Vin Diesel, so I really don't know what to make of it.

Reminds me of Susannah York talking smack about Christopher Reeve on the set of Superman II. Everyone in Hollywood thought Reeve was a sweetheart and a great guy, but she disliked him, stating that "he acted like the whole movie revolved around him." Well, it was a Superman movie...and he played Superman...so...y'know...

Vin Diesel produces these movies through his own production company. He has creative control over the series' direction. He gets to consult story decisions with Chris Morgan, and he gets a say in picking the directors too. He can be very demanding (IIRC, he insisted that his character can never lose a fight, hence him beating The Rock in Fast Five).

Directors and producers clashing on the set of a big budget movie is a tale as old as time.

https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/s480x480/17201263_964131536836_51251962 59151762602_n.jpg?oh=e32bfb67a 2d4f7d83f4a2563c4425af0&oe=59563D0A

20+ people showed up for it, several of them for all three days, which was incredible. I love that most people who showed up had either not seen any of them before, or had only seen the first two movies, when they came out. By Sunday everyone was crying, which was all I ever wanted.

My keynote ended up being like 25 minutes, which was longer than I thought it was gonna be. It was emotionally draining.

A couple of people told me afterwards that they're now going to try to see F8 opening weekend. PAY ME, UNIVERSAL.

I'm DYING to watch Better Luck Tomorrow again.

Not only because it's a good movie, but also because Sung Kang and Justin Lin won't deny that Han in that movie is the same Han in the F&F franchise.

Didn't you do something similar for Furious 7, or did you just talk about wanting to do something like this before? Either way, pretty cool that you were able to arrange such an event.

I don't suppose you could share with us a typed version of that keynote, assuming, as Skitch said, that it wasn't filmed?

I did do something similar two years ago. Good memory. It was definitely more of an undertaking this year, because of the presentation and also hosting the brunch.

I don't have a typed version since I was riffing mostly from just notes and citations, sorry. I can share this first slide of my powerpoint, though:

And here's a picture of the Corona shandy we served everyone for brunch:

Dammit, just that first slide alone has now piqued my interest even further as to what all was discussed. :p

Read a hilarious tweet along the lines of "I think the only reason they're continuing this franchise for this long is to get to the instalment called 'Fast10 Your Seatbelts'"

And it looks like that's because Fast & Furious spin-off with Dwayne Johnson’s and Jason Statham’s is getting a July 26, 2019 release.

I see why Tyrese was upset.

Not gonna lie. I laughed at the elevator bit. There's a LOT of punching and kicking in this movie. Trailer shows a LOT. But I think they need to do this to get this spin-off off the ground.

I haven't seen a F&F movie in theaters since Fast Five- but i think I would see THIS in theaters.

That looks like a live-action Saturday morning cartoon. And IMO, that's a good thing.
