I agree about the senselessness of rating those movies, but it seems like I am quite the fanboy. I find his jazzy paranoid cinema absolutely unique. That and the fact that his usual actors are splendid.

What can I say? I like this guy's style. Verite cinematography, excessive substance abuse and galvanizing performances (um, let's just forget the performances in Shadows, though)? Thanks for the good times, Johnny.

Having just watched A Woman Under the Influence, I would like those of you who have it a negative rating (looking at Spinal) to, if you want to, give me a couple of sentences summarizing your feelings about it.

Both Falk and Rowlands were incredible. Coming from a house that was not entirely unrecognizable from the situation in the film, I found both characterizations, though stylized in the extreme, to touch on a few gestures that most depictions of domestic quarrel either refuse or are blind to. I loved the way Rowlands spit and gestured and cocked her mouth and snarled and lurched and swayed and danced. Falk, the fiery little ball of temper, has never been so uncanny and impressive. The role of the children was a little disturbing at first, being 2-dimensional and acting more as foils than things to genuinely love. The final scenes are more than a trifle pat but offer what I found to be a profound sense of edification. Does Falk's slap really knock the crazy out of her? I don't think so. And I don't necessarily agree that the slap was the best thing to do, though it's tough to say with delusional people. But throughout the film, Rowlands's neuroses never strays from credible (I hate "crazy" in movies, because it's rarely specific--most of the time, it's a plot point or a device, rarely considering the afflicted or allowing the character calmer human traits), and the sense of that burgeoning "awareness", let's call it, is a respite from the bullheaded Falk's boorish insistence on normalcy and the status quo. These characters feel married, and it's a wonderful thing that we have this movie where we can see how these unpleasant people love each other, however impossible.

That would be the shorter one then. I prefer the longer one by a wide margin, but I can't imagine it raising someone's opinion by more than a point or two. You'd still be a 5 or 6 at best. Or it could seem just more of the same and you could drop to a 3.
