Rules & Results (http://www.match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=426)
To undo the bunch that Derek's panties are in, or possibly wrap them even more, short films do count for Griffith.

Broken Blossoms - 7.5
I've seen some of his early shorts, but I find it pretty tough to slap a rating on any of them.
Birth of a Nation - 10
Intolerance - 8
Broken Blossoms - 6.5
I know I've seen a bunch of his shorts, but I'll have to find out which ones later. I will edit this post in the not too distant future.

I have no idea which shorts I've seen from D.W. I want to see The Iconoclast but there's no description of it on IMDB.

I'm going to completely ignore historical relevance here. It's the only way I can come up with a number.
Birth of a Nation - 3
Broken Blossoms - 4

It's very hard for me to reconcile my feelings about Birth of a Nation. I do not really factor historical relevance into my personal feelings about a film. I just found it to be intensely exciting and creative. I do recognize its social ignorance, but I can't help but admire it. Very torn am I.

Even beyond the social ignorance, I just didn't find it to be very compelling drama. It was a real chore to make it through.

Well, you did watch it without music...

Next time, I'll get wasted and watch it with some Pink Floyd and laser lights.

I remember watching Phantom of the Opera to ABBA and Hendrix. It was freakin' sweet.

I feel weird about making my own music selection for a silent film, particularly if I haven't seen it. There's just something so Duchamp about that.

What the frak? Why have people only seen, like, two or three of the man's work? (To be fair, I'm only at 5 or 6, but man...)

Availability I guess. Otside of the main three, I can't really separate the others.
He has a good amount of movies on the Instant Watch feature through Netflix. I may try and use that sometime this week.

Because I didn't like them and found them unpleasant in their racial characterizations and didn't have any interest in seeing more.

Broken Blossoms-8.0
I haven't seen anything beyond that due to the fact that I haven't been able to get my hands on anything else the man has made. I was lucky to even see that film, and it was thanks to a film class I took two years ago.

Birth of a Nation is pretty easy to get a hold of. Hell, I think it's even legal to view it online for free now

Trust me, Way Down East is like, ten times more interesting than Birth of A Nation.

Well, work has prevented me from getting to Intolerance in time for this consensus, as it looks like it won't happen until late next week or so. So I fail massively. I can't regard any of the following films as out-and-out masterpieces (BB has the culturally awkward white man acting as an Asian, Orphans felt overly long at points) but the technical ingenuity cannot be ignored in my mind.
Broken Blossoms - 8
Way Down East - 9
Orphans of the Storm - 7
