Interesting. Anything that you can pinpoint your response to? I was rather amazed by it and wonder if having access to the book would shift my response to the film.

I'm holding off on posting my ratings until I get to Night and Fog and Muriel later into the week...

I don't remember it very well, but I had the same response to it as I did to Sans Soleil: too much soft-toned voiceover portending more than it adds up to, and not enough of interest in its editing rhythm to completely carry it. I'll probably give both films another shot at some point.

I agree that the method itself is somewhat off-puttingly pretentious but I feel that ultimately the dialogue itself does add up to all that it portends... and I just disagree with the editing comment.

# Hiroshima mon amour (1959) - 9.5
# Guernica (1950/I) - 6.5

Night and Fog I saw in a class years ago and I'm not sure if we saw the whole thing or just snippets so I'll hold off on rating it. Last Year at Marienbad I really liked except for the score which I hated.

Thoughts on Night and Fog are rather typical, as I love how Resnais crosscuts between historical footage/images with how we reconcile (or don't) the actions of the horrific city with its then-present day reality, all desolate wasteland and decaying preserve. It allows for a mediation of space and what makes up our cultural memory of that space, which are fascinating topics for a film of this nature to cover. Despite its power, though, I wonder what we're meant to take from this film... that is to say, are we merely to question and remember that all towns/people possess in them the capacity to embrace rampant butchery, or to remember all the atrocities that linger in the remains of our present cities, or... I want this film to have just a bit more to say, I think, and Resnais doesn't quite go there. Still brutal in the last five minutes or so of images.

So what does it mean that Reitman has twice the turnout of Resnais? Anything?

I don't really know if being the parents of baby_doll is anything to be proud of.

Watched Hiroshima Mon Amour as my first Resnais a while back. Didn't love it as a whole, but I did love roughly the first 20 minutes.
