I had IFC at one point and, to be honest, I just didn't watch it much. I prefer either going to the cinema or watching on DVD so that I can pause in the event of a distraction or rewind if I miss a line.

My DVR is only $5 extra a month. You might want to investigate, because for that price it's well worth it to record, rewind, and pause TV.

I have investigated. It's not just the charge for the DVR. I would have to subscribe to a more expensive monthly package.
