Well I've started making my way through the films. I know of the odd film curse but I've also heard it's a bunch of bullpooie so I'm here to ask you for the honest to goodness low down on the Star Trek universe. So rate/rank the film series if you would be so kind.
I've seen Kahn and The Journey Home.

III - 4.0
IV - 7.0
V - 3.5
VI - 7.5
Generations - 5.0
I am a believer in 'ze curse. I have never bothered with any of the Next Generation films outside Generations which was kind of the segue. Nicholas Meyer's two contributions are definitely my favorites.

They just seemed too old by then. It didn't work for me. Also the fact that I'm not in any way a fan of Star Trek or any of it's offspring probably has something to do with the general low scores overall. I saw most of these with my dad who's a big Trekkie.

I - Kinda slow and anti-climactic, but the most pure sci-fi of the bunch. Worst Shatner hairpiece of the entire franchise. 3.5/5
II - Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! 4/5
III - Spoooooooooooooooock! 3/5
IV - Double dumb-ass to you! 4/5. Worth the price of admission to see a beligerent Bones arguing with late 80s surgeons.
V - Shatner tries to recreate the comedic vibe of IV. Epic fail. 2/5
VI - Nice compromise between KHAAAAAAN and Double Dumb-ass, plus Handsome Actor George Takei finally gets his own fucking ship. Took the bastards six damned movies to do it, but better late than never, I guess. 3.5/5
Generations - Fine, except for the parts with Shatner. Some of the parts are of particular interest with a head full of LSD. 3/5
First Contact - FINALLY, they make a badass out of Worf. 4/5
Insurrection - Don't bother. Seriously. 2/5
The Other One With Young Picard, Can't remember The Name and It's Not Worth My Time to Look It Up on IMDB. 2/5 - plays out like a poorly written episode of Voyageur.

They seem more Galaxy Quest than Star Trek to me. Star Trek has a sense of humor but it also has a sense of dignity that at it's best lends it an air of sci-fi credibility.
The cast also just seems way too young on average.

Ah, still seem too young to have the responsibility of commanding and operating a spacecraft imo. Most of the main actors will be between 29-38 when this is released. The Original Series had the main actors between 30-45 years old. I don't see it as much of a stretch that they'd be operating spacecraft 5 years before they were going where no man had gone before in the 60's.

I don't care how old the actors are, they look and feel too young to me... perhaps it's less their age and more of a Hollywood sheen. I don't know but Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, John Cho and Zoe Saldana amongst others all feel really young to me. Also it blows my mind that Winona Ryder is 37 years old she's a huge babyface as well... looks late 20's if that.
To answer Meg's question Captain is O-5 ranking... so on average about 39 years old give or take. Although there are certainly many exceptions.

That's exactly how I feel. Simply because of the cast, I can't help but think of this new Trek film as being a spoof or a farce. If they really want to reboot the franchise, I think it would be best to cast unknowns.
They don't need stars, the name STAR TREK is bigger than any movie star they could possible sign on.

I'm totally pumped for the next one by the way. Oh sure, there's trepidation as well, but it would appear that Trek is finally being groomed for Blockbusterdom with a huge budget, a director who can actually direct some visual pizzaz and a summer release date. Well, I'm immensely curious to see how that is going to pan out.
They don't need stars, the name STAR TREK is bigger than any movie star they could possible sign on.
The cast isn't exactly filled to the brim with A listers. Simon Pegg? Chris Pine? Anton Yelchin? Nonetheless, like Qrazy, I'm currently undecided whether this cast is great or not although some of these are really kinda cool.
Nevertheless, I still disagree with the bold statement. Star Trek hasn't really been huge for a looooong time. Yeah, the dorks keep it alive and I'm glad for that, but with The Abrams flick, Trek will venture into the uncharted waters of blockbuster country. It's a new, exciting direction for this venerable franchise and one cannot help but feel that if this approach fails as well, the possibility of more Trek movies will suddenly seem agonizingly remote.
In that sense, a few big names wouldn't be such a bad deal really. Especially considering that this one carries a budget north of 100 million. It does, in a way, feel like a last ditch attempt by Paramount to position Star Trek as a player, a force to be reckoned with. It stands to reason then that Star Trek really hasn't been as "huge" as you claim.

Isn't Simon Pegg in his 30s? I mean the cast really doesn't seem much younger than the cast of the original series in the late 1960s. Plus in the military you can be a commanding officer (like a Major or Captain) by the time you are in your mid to late 20s. I don't see what the problem is here.

The first four are the best. I love the Spock Trilogy, even though the flaws of the last two are more apparent to me now. The Motion Picture is actually quite fascinating - it's the only one in the series that comes close to being Hard SF, though the pace drags at times. It seems to be trying to be like 2001 and it doesn't entirely work, though I'd take that over a number of successful but senseless sci-fi movies.
While I find the first six movies to be more entertaining than the original series, it's the complete opposite with Picard's crew. With the exception of First Contact, those movies just feel like extended episodes of the show. First Contact feels more like a film, but in my opinion still not very good. I used to love it, but now I see it's just an action movie with Trek characters. It also bothered me that they screwed up mythology to make the film work - why do they have a Borg Queen if they're a Collective, and have no gender? They used to be chilling symbols of conformity, but they lost some of that in First Contact...in fact, that movie didn't feel like Star Trek to me, but rather a blockbuster designed for everybody else.
I don't really watch Star Trek anymore. Um, honest.:|
