View Full Version : Match Cut VS. The World VI (?) - Best Villain

Ezee E
07-15-2008, 11:50 PM
I'll try to do this like we've done the previous polls.

We'll try to gather a ballot of 100+ villains from which the final vote will take place.

So, submit a list of villains you think should be on that ballot. 20 nominations per person MAX. There is no minimum.

I'll let this go on for at least a week, or until it dies out, and then move on.

Please list villain alphabetically, followed by the movie they are in.

GO!

Hmm... Great question, I'll go straight from the AFI rules and use that:

*Villain: For voting purposes, a "villain" was defined as a character(s) whose wickedness of mind, selfishness of character and will to power are sometimes masked by beauty and nobility, while others may rage unmasked. They can be horribly evil or grandiosely funny, but are ultimately tragic.

So, no Jaws or Alien.

So wait...by that definition someone like Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood or Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull could be a "villain." Doesn't there have to be a protaganist here? Or are we counting movies where the main character is a tragic asshole? (There Will Be Blood, Raging Bull, The Shining, etc.)

Wikipedia's definition is fantastic.
A villain is an "evil" character in a story, whether a historical narrative or, especially, a work of fiction. The villain usually is the bad guy, the character who fights against the hero.

But some of these are what I mentioned before: A main character of a film can be morally bankrupt and "bad" but are they really the villain if they are the main character of the film and most of the film is through their eyes? Doesn't there have to be a sympathetic protaganist to latch on to? I'm thinking films like The Godfather, American Psycho, The Shining, Aguierre, There Will Be Blood, Monster, etc.

I have a hard time categorizing Norma Desmond as a villain. Perhaps because she's too delusional for me to really think she's malicious. Great character though, no doubt.

Grouchy
07-16-2008, 05:00 AM
Yeah, for a character to be a villain, there has to be a protagonist who actively fights him on the side of the good. I wouldn't call Norma Desmond or Aguirre villains, because they're clearly the protagonists. It's like saying Macbeth or Othello are villains, when they're in fact tragic heroes.

Well, although there isn't a hero to oppose them and they may be delusional, I think Desmond and Aguirre fit the given defintion:

"a "villain" was defined as a character(s) whose wickedness of mind, selfishness of character and will to power are sometimes masked by beauty and nobility, while others may rage unmasked. They can be horribly evil or grandiosely funny, but are ultimately tragic."

also I think a clearcut opposition limits it too much to superheroes and more mainstream fare. (shrugs)
