Welcome to Week 23 of the director consensus thread. This week, it's Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Wiki notes:
Jean-Pierre Jeunet was born in Roanne, Loire, France. He bought his first camera at the age of 17 and made short films while studying animation at Cinémation Studios. He befriended Marc Caro, a designer and comic book artist who became Jeunet's longtime collaborator and co-director.
Together, Jeunet and Caro directed award-winning animations. Their first live action film was The Bunker of the Last Gunshots (1981), a short film about soldiers in a bleak futuristic world. Jeunet also directed numerous advertisements and music videos.
Jeunet and Caro's first feature film was Delicatessen (1991), a black comedy set in a famine-plagued post-apocalyptic world, in which a block of flats above a delicatessen is ruled by a butcher who kills people in order to feed his tenants.
Next came The City of Lost Children (1995), a dark, multi-layered fantasy film with a twisting plot about a doctor who kidnaps children in order to steal their dreams.
The success of The City of Lost Children led to an invitation to direct the fourth movie in the Alien series - Alien: Resurrection (1997). Like his subsequent films, this one is credited only to Jeunet, although Caro did some work on the art design. Though not well received by critics, Alien: Resurrection turned a profit at the box office.
Jeunet returned to France. The clout of having a Hollywood film under his belt gave him free rein on his next project, Amélie, starring Audrey Tautou. Amélie is lighter and more romantic than his previous films, a fact sometimes attributed to Caro's minimal participation. This story, about a girl who takes pleasure in doing good deeds but cannot find love herself, was a huge commercial and box office success worldwide, and was nominated for several Academy Awards. For this film he also got an European Film Award for Best Director.
In 2004, Jeunet released A Very Long Engagement, an adaptation of the novel by Sébastien Japrisot set after World War I, during which a woman (played by Audrey Tautou) searches for her missing lover.
In 2007, Jeunet pulled out of directing Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi due to budget reasons. Jeunet has now gone on to direct his own film Micmacs a tire-larigot

Dude's consistent. Surprised by the COTC hate. It was one of my favorite films during high school, so that's where the bulk of my high rating lies. Guess I need to revisit.

Also surprised that in my first post, I got the film's title and its initials wrong, as well as initials that didn't match my misinterpretation of the title. That takes some sort of skill.

No, no... I'm baffled because (usually a real life scenario) whenever I bring up my ambivalence towards that film, I'm usually greeted with a barrage of "What?!"s. I was under the impression that its love was much more than it apparently is. I do not express disappointment, only bafflement in light of my own experiences.

Being part of the majority of a minority. Match-cut's taste is a fairly poor indicator of general consensus (fairly and general both being rather vague terms which could refer to many different groups of film fans). That said I agree that CoLC is his weakest film... the drama and general plot flow just doesn't come together in an interesting fashion. It has a few interesting set pieces but the gestalt is lacking.

Haha fair enough.
I actually have wanted to see Alien 3 and 4 for quite some time now... I know that they're supposed to be bad or at least not good but I'd like to round out both director's filmographies.

Alien 3 is quite a remarkably well-directed and atmospheric film. I love, love, love it.
Alien Resurrection is crap, however.
I still don't understand why something as hollow and committed to twee quirks as Amelie can become so universally loved.
If it didn't have subtitles, it'd be lumped in with Juno and Little Miss Sunshine for its icky jokiness that's not terribly funny.

Nah, it's much more visually competent than the latter two films. It's also not especially hollow because it seems to both believe in and value it's sentiments. But yes it is certainly quirky and for many too cutesy for it's own good, but I can take cute and sappy if I feel there is merit to be found elsewhere in the film... and I find both it's visual language and certain emotive moments tremendously affecting.

I'll venture to say that's not true, as others would praise it for its technical craft, whether it be the cinematography, or use of special effects. There's a ton more to this than there are to your two mentioned (also good) films.
