K, this looks like such ridiculous fun. I've never seen this on stage, but the other great musical that's connected to ABBA (Chess) is a fine piece of work, and this looks about twenty times more fun than My Big Fat Greek Waste of Time.

By the way, it's really not fair that Meryl Streep can do everything. Shouldn't there be laws against this sort of thing?

Hmmmm... doesn't look campy enough. I am afraid.

Better quality:

EDIT: And a different trailer, apparently. Must be the American version. I like the other one a bit better.

That looks awesome!

I think it's released the same weekend as Batman though. Too bad.

I'm forced into seeing this one. Not that I mind, really.

I'm planning on seeing it; I'm admittedly a sucker for musicals. But, I am sad that in all of the promotions I've seen, Stellan Skarsgård doesn't get any mention for being in it. And I heart him.

I heart Stellan, too! Very underrated actor, and I'm very interested to see how he fares in a musical.

I like musicals and I like the actors involved. Might see it sometime.

Yeah, I suspect that I'll see this at some point. I rather enjoyed the ABBA songs in Muriel's Wedding, so I suspect this will be enjoyable, though the initial crux of the story (which of the three guys fathered Streep's daughter) is a bit troubling to me and seems at odds with the music.

That said, Skarsgård + Firth = dd seeing it.

I was talking about this to people the other day. It opens the same day as The Dark Knight, so we all know it's going to underperform.

Even gay men, would they choose to see this, or see Heath Ledger's last movie?

This. Not Batman. :)

Well, we chicks have to have an alternative to the Bat movie, no? I, for one, have no interest in The Dark Knight.

Hmm, as an individual (and a female) interested in the art of film, I would much rather see The Dark Knight. While I won't know for sure until they're out, I would think that The Dark Knight has more potential than Mamma Mia!to be significant cinematically beyond mere summer blockbuster fare. But I could be wrong, I'd definitely like to see both.

Oh, I know my opinion is minority one (for both male and female ), and I definitely think that The Dark Knight has wider appeal and will probably have more legs at the BO, but I find it to be wise counterprogramming to release a film like MM.

Perhaps I was a little harsh earlier. Let me rephrase: I have very little interest in The Dark Knight. Saw Batman Begins, as well as the earlier Keaton/Kilmer incarnations, and it's just not my thing. Sorry.

That does seem true; either way, Hollywood'll be getting people into the theatres that weekend.

More excited for this than the bat movie. Most of my friends are on board to see it as well. Will probably pull a double feature with the two. A little disappointed in all of you and your lack of excitement for a freaking Abba musical with Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan.

The trailers leave me cold. Looks like calculated cuteness to a disgusting degree. Also, Stellan >>>> Meryl, Pierce, or Colin.

Spinal

Yeah, the story looks really, really lame. Looks like little more than an opportunity for a few stars to do ABBA karaoke.

The fact that the musical has been wildly successful for nearly a decade gives me hope that the story isn't as lame an excuse for songs as We Will Rock You, the musical based on Queen's songs that I saw in London a month ago, is. Not to say that good music can't carry along a mediocre story.

Hmm. And there was probably great hope before that as well...

You've succeeded in lowering my expectations (but I'm still seeing it, so perhaps you've also succeeded in making my experience either less surprisingly bad or more surprisingly good).

You say ABBA like its a good thing and not the most evil music entity to ever walk the earth.

I like the cast, but that's hardly ever what I look for in a musical.

I admit I like ABBA's music alright. Casting was very good (Streep, Firth, Skaarsgard, Brosnan). Location was excellent. Songs were very well sung (not sure who did the singing and I didn't care) and the sound production was very good. Story was fine. The director just messed this up very very badly. Some of the worst musical moments put to screen I've ever seen. She seems to have no idea what a film musical even is or where to start. If she was trying to invent some new style she failed utterly. I see that she's well known for theater and opera but here all her experience in those mediums were to no avail. Minor quibble but some of the sexual innuendos should have been cut (guy getting a blow job?!) - this is squeaky clean ABBA we're taking about here. 4/10 (I expect the MC average would be 3/10).
