I find it odd that when asked to pull off unemotional and wooden, Keanu can't really accomplish it convincingly. He's a puzzle, that one.

The idea of aliens concerned about global warming is a pretty far stretch. I'm interested to see how they pull that out. I can't see it being successful.

I couldn't watch it with the sound on at work, but it looked purty as hell (seriously, are effects getting so good that far-in-advance-trailers have good effects now?). Love the original like crazy. Couple things looked pretty standard in it.

I don't remember seeing the giant sphere of death in the original.

This looks middling but the director does seem to have (based on trailers of this and exorcism of emily rose) a little visual panache. I'd be interested in seeing this or Exorcism simply because Derrickson is doing a Paradise Lost adaptation and I'd like to know if he can pull it off (only hoping for success on a spectacle level).

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is very bad and very boring. Good sense of composition and light, though, that's true.

I think it's an overlooked movie. Scary at the right times, and it resonated with me. It may have relied on The Exorcist a little too much, but the courtroom scenes were interesting as we saw fact VS. faith.

Very excited, I dig what I've seen. Also, I may be the only person in the world who can never get enough Keanu.

Is Kevin Spacey in this?

I could've sworn I saw him as one of the HAZMAT guys, wearing glasses.

The visuals in this movie look very impressive. Seeing the semi-truck and Giants Stadium get destroyed are, simply put, awesome.

I certainly don't mind a little bit of destruction and apocalyptical imagery to go along with Klaatu's ultimatum. I thought the original was hardly persuasive in that regard and that silly looking robot didn't help matters.

Keanu Reeves in the facility is much more interesting than wanton global destruction. Been there, done that.

Seems they lost the entire point of the original.

Well, I would hope they wouldn't simply rehash the same ideas all over again.

I rather like the new theme here, but I'm not convinced on the execution.

I can't really tell what the movie is going for, though.

Is the Keanu-alien on Earth to try to save us from ourselves, like the original? Or is it purely a "kill the humans to save the environment" type thing?

If it's the former, the logic behind destroying cities and having Gort be a giant walking death machine really doesn't make sense.

And while on the topic of Gort...I don't like this new giant version. He was better man-sized.

I'll buy the aliens caring about the environment of Earth. If life sustaining planets are rare among the stars, they are precious arks valuable beyond the current dominant species.

I guess the fact that this thread is still in this section, no one has seen it?

Just got back.

Couple of comments.

1. Keanu is perfect for this role. Emotionless. Very Alien like. And it even appears as if he kept the same suit he wore in the Matrix and Constantine.

2. The opening scenes are well done. A lot of drama, lots of questions, gathering scientists from around the area, trying to figure out what the f is going on.

3. Would have thought they change the way Gort looked. Although he looks a lot more robot like (as apposed to the man in the suit in the original) they even gave him a meaning for the name. (Genetically Organized Robotic Technology). I wish he blew more stuff up, melted weapons at least like he did in the original.

4. I love the explanation why Klaatu looks human.

5. I love the explanation and action on why Klaatu is here... to save Earth. Much more complex other than, "here's a robot don't piss him off."

6. I love the raised level of hostility of the humans. It makes you want to punch everyone in the face.

Complains.

1. Predictable as hell. What the spheres are. Why the spheres are here. What Klaatu's response is to the complaints of the spheres.

2. The "entire point" of the original is partially lost, not entirely. The theme remains the same, however the execution is very very poor. It was almost as if they had everything written, started shooting the film, and then said: "Oh fuck, we forgot to make the Earth stand still".

3. The child was used as a prop, oozing the "see how innocent we really are" point to Klaatu.

4. Klaatu is a softie.

5. The original sphere, "Klaatu's ship" is lame. Give him a god damn space ship. Not something out of a Dustin Hoffman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphere_(film)) movie.

Overall, its an alright remake. A lot more fast paced than the original.

something else i thought of...

out of the two big destruction scenes we saw in the trailer (and the only two in the actual movie) the Truck being melted and Giants stadium being destroyed... its weird to me why they chose to make that short truck scene... why not something much more significant? a trucker dies... big deal?

I rather liked it...until it fell completely apart in the third act. Will Smith's kid S U C K S.

Gort turning into vapor cloud of doom was epic fail.
