I can't remember if I saw French Cancan or only a few scenes from it, watched it in a French class senior year of high school... pretty sure we watched the whole thing but maybe we split it up and I missed a day. Due for a rewatch.
I'm disappointed you didn't like Last King of Scotland or Tree of Wooden Clogs... for the former because I heard it was good (Uwe Boll's favorite film of that year!) and for the latter because I'm quite enamored with the other three Olmi films I've seen.

I would actually love to see Wooden Clogs again as I could easily see being more on its wavelength now then when I saw it a few years back. As for The Last King of Scotland, I'm tired of having these foreign/exotic biopics or historical dramas being filtered through the eyes of a middle class white boy. Perhaps I find Idi Amin more interesting then some douche who ends up Uganda because he closed his eyes and spun a globe, but that's just me.

Anyone care to give lengthier thoughts on Pennies From Heaven? I first heard about it and added it when I added a bunch of Gordon Willis DP'd efforts. I didn't realize it had a number of fans here.

I never saw the BBC source from which this originated, but the Ross film probably caught a lot of folks off-guard when it premiered: there were the stunning dance numbers that filled the trailers and previews, but audiences didn't exactly warm to the downbeat narrative which seemed at odds with the style in which the musical numbers were filmed. That, and the fact that Steve Martin was cast completely against type was what today's mainstream audiences probably felt when they went to see Punch Drunk Love thinking it was another raucous Adam Sandler comedy. It's still a fine film though and you'd probably like it quite a bit.

Pennies From Heaven is an interesting genre bender. It's actually a pretty dark comedy/musical that takes place during the Depression. One of the better musicals as well as Steve Martin films I've seen, and Christopher Walken showcases his awesome tap dancing abilities.

I actually thought Steve Martin was really terrible in Pennies from Heaven. He was completely miscast and didn't sound at all convincing delivering 1930's dialogue.
I liked enough of the musical sequences to give it a recommendation.

I'd totally agree that Martin was miscast, although I can see where there mind may have been at: they wanted someone who could play "earnest". Although his performance doesn't work, it didn't offend me enough to really distract me, and I thought that the musical sequences were SO incredible that it merits as a must-watch. The title sequence, anything with Bernadette Peters, Walken's striptease… all were so good.

87. Gimme Shelter David Maysles, Albert Maysles &
I've only seen 17 of those, so we both have similar work ahead. (Did I say work? I meant pleasures.)
Four of those are among my favorite films -- Berlin Alexanderplatz, An Angel at My Table, The Up Docs, and Gimme Shelter. I might even put a few of them on my top ten list if I ever get around to putting another one together.
Manhunter is my favorite Mann film. (Okay, it's the only Mann film I truly like.) Medium Cool seemed, well, really cool when I saw it 25 years ago, but it just felt dated and dull when I re-watched it about six months ago. Drowning by Numbers is awesome, one of my favorite Greenaways along with The Falls and The Cook, The Thief... Prospero's Books is gorgeous and ambitious, but ultimately just a bit too much. (It's been a long time and I should probably re-watch Prospero's Books. I can't really remember too much what. I just remember thinking "too much.")
And I love Doctor Zhivago. It's exactly what an epic love story should be -- and what Titanic should've been. Of course, I lucked out and saw it on the big screen in Seattle during the SIFF.

I didn't mind the story being told from the perspective of a middle class white boy, but I did mind the story of a national tragedy being turned into that white boy's personal tragedy. It seemed obscene to me that the torture of a fictional foreigner was made out to be the culmination of Idi Amin's reign of terror.
Anyway, here's what I've seen:
10. The Leopard Luchino Visconti Italy 1963 - 8
12. Scenes from a Marriage Ingmar Bergman Sweden - 9
13. Le trou Jacques Becker France 1960 - 9
15. The Marriage of Maria Braun Rainer Werner Fassbinder - 7
16. Winter Light Ingmar Bergman Sweden 1962 - 8.5

39. Devils, The (1971; UK) - 8
48. The Man Who Laughs - 5
