Everyone know Luis Buñuel's work is highly overrated. Snob.

My statement might have some arguement had I ever seen on of his films.

I will. Recommendations?

I came in here to spread mass love of slime and Aliens and came out with a hankerin' for obscure (possibly) silent film era flicks...

Lack of exposure was the only plausible explanation. Los Olvidados is my favorite, but kind of hard to find. Un Chien Andalou is easy to find on the internet. Simon of the Desert, El, The Phantom of Liberty, That Obscure Object of Desire ... etc, etc. He's my favorite.

I like the suspense of the first one over the guns of the second one.

For my money it doesn't get much more enjoyable than watching Shaolin Soccer with a head full of liquor.

I like the suspense of the first one over the guns of the second one.

It does come down to one's interest for action or suspense, but I do think Cameron manages a couple of fine suspense sequences on his own.

In all honesty, I do think my avatar is a good refutation of the original post, but I'll never argue against Aliens for adrenaline-soaked fun.

You know, if you were to time them, there aren't that many action sequences in Aliens, and most of them are infused with a strong vibe of horror-tinged suspense. Look at the entire sequence with the team exploring the ravaged colony that builds to the military team getting slaughtered, the sequence with the face-hugger in the locked room, or even the few survivors watching as their defensive sentry guns almost run out of ammo as the aliens try to attack their hideout. It's hardly just an adrenaline-soaked action movie.

The claustrophobia remains. The sequences are almost tactical as it goes from an offensive battle to simply survival, which is more horror than action. The final showdown at the end is certainly something out of an action movie, but the design and effectiveness of that creature makes it far more thrilling then just an ordinary action piece.

Delicatessen.

It's got humor, romance, action, irony, a covert operation, and escargot.

He's...ok. I thought Los was irritating. Obscure Object and Discreet Charm are both disarming as hell, though. Tristana is kinda boring, but Belle is captivating (bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz). I think I saw Viridiana, but if I did, I don't remember much from it.

And Chien............/shrug.

Yes, exactly.

I've always found it strange that Aliens is considered an action movie, when it's so low on action.

I think I saw Viridiana, but if I did, I don't remember much from it.

If you did you would because it's one of if not his best. I agree with you that Tristana is fairly weak. You should see The Milky Way and The Phantom of Liberty. They are the most stylistically similar to Discreet Charm and Obscure Object. Nazarin and Exterminating Angel also deserve a mention as quality. I enjoyed Diary of a Chambermaid but I don't think you would much, dunno.

I don't have that much love for L'age d'or, Las Hurdes and Un Chien Andalou but I recognize their importance and competence and they each have a few moments that enrapture me... but all in all too disjointed for my aesthetic preferences.

I guess it's only considered an action movie as it relates to Scott's 1979 movie. And action is a relative term. Even when the marines are just walking through corridors, awesomely formidable hardware is always present and testosterone just seems to be dripping from every single sesquence. I've always found it masterful how persuasive the marines' turnaround is. They're typical badasses at the start, shit you've seen before in other words, but soon enough they're going to get their asses royally kicked and the desperation, confusion and perhaps even cowardice is frighteningly real. That was a great choice by Cameron and writers to set these marines up as ultimate badasses and then set them up for what I can only describe as EPIC FAIL! If that kind of firepower isn't enough, what must ensue can only be described as utter hell. For the characters, but also for audiences. This is the most uncomfortably thrilling movie I've ever seen. Still, you're right of course. Aliens is suspense + action and handles either aspect with oodles of skill and conviction. I would say that the suspenseful bits are even more nailbiting than in Alien which is still great naturally.

Thumbs up to Rowland and Ezee E!

I imagine Aliens being his response to the macho nonsense of the Rambo movie.
