A new film starring Liam Neeson. His daughter is kidnapped, and he uses his skillz to get her back.
Trailer is here. (http://movies.ign.com/dor/objects/14261305/taken-2009/videos/taken_trailer_061908.html)
Looks pretty bland.
I'm all for revenge movies, but the PG-13 rating and the daughter's horrid acting have me pretty worried.

This is from the director of District B13 and the cinematographer of Danny the Dog and the Transporter movies, so I hope for the best.

I hope they never stop playing the ads for this film on TV.

Same here. It's entertaining on its own.

Are you saying that they're entertaining because they're great or entertaining because they're cheesy?
I personally think the ads have been great.

It can't be both? I think they're fabulous, as well.

"I was a preventer."
"What do you prevent?"

The trailers have actually sold me on seeing this. Hey look, its Liam Neeson tearing around France, killing and torturing people. Its ridiculously funny and awesome all at the same time.

This movie fuckin rocked. Pretty much a PG-13 version of Man on Fire and Payback. You get what you expect. Nothing fancy. Just Liam Neeson kicking everyone's ass. Ending was a little sloppy... but the first 3/4s flowed. [80.6]
I didn't even recognize Maggie Grace in the trailer.

Pretty much a PG-13 version of Man on Fire and Payback.
This probably explains why I disliked it so intently.

I thought it was pretty great.
I've seen both cuts. Definitely see the R cut if you have the chance.

How can one see the R cut? I didn't even know there was an R cut available - I thought it was filmed as a PG-13 movie.

It was released in France over a year ago.

I went to see this last spring when it was playing in South Korea, but wound up walking out after twenty minutes because there was a re-run of 30 Rock that I didn't want to miss.

I still really want to see it, despite knowing ahead of time that it doesn't really have anything thoughtful to say about revenge.
Revenge may be my favorite theme or explored emotion on the screen. There have been some fascinating stories painted around this, which is at once one of our most base, simplistic emotions, and also a complex web of personal experiences.
The Limey and Dead Man's Shoes are two that have stuck with me for a long time.

Some ones that really affected me; the Godfather, Payback, Breakdown.

Saw the R-Rated cut and enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the Bourne movies. Logic be damned, Liam Neeson makes it work. The second I saw that Luc Besson wrote this, I knew I'd like it.
Bryan Mills is sort of a boring name. Wonder what they'll do with him in the sequel. Hopefully his daughter doesn't get into trouble again...
Its a great, fun movie. I get the giggles.

Yeah, this was fun. Liam Neeson was awesome, and like E said, basically the whole reason it works. Too many other elements are poorly calculated, like the way the teenage girls were written/directed. Just too obvious, too lazy. Also, the sound design during the car chase was bad. Actually, that scene was awful in general. They should have stuck to what worked and not throw in a random and lame car chase.

Basically it was just elements from 24, the Bond and Bourne movies, all thrown in together. Overall its a fairly decent time waster, with some good action sequences, and Neelson was badass. It also has one of the funniest moments I've ever seen in a movie: When the guy gets away from Neeson, turns around to walk across the freeway, and gets hit by a truck. I laughed for a good five minutes.

I'd like to see Leslie Nielson in a gritty revenge drama. In the old days he was actually a serious actor. It wouldn't hurt for him to try that again.
Neeson.
There's no "L".His last name is strange to me.

Meh.
It wasn't terrible, but it could have been much better. The action scenes weren't too great - especially that car chase through the construction site, which was terrible.
As most everyone has said already, Liam Neeson makes it work better than it would have otherwise.
The script is horrendous. The two girls are so unlikable that I didn't really care what happened to them in the end, I just wanted more of Neeson's badass behaviour.
It also felt a little too brief.
I'll stick with Bourne.
